We have a rather preposterous situation here concern-
the proposed freeway: Almost every individual in the
Newport Harbor-Costa Mesa area is dead set aaajnat
bovina the freeway plowthrouJb ow community; almost
everyone 1eems convinced that we CWinot keep it out.
That kind of attitude is no t very rcauurina. Our
community a 1 noted for its hard working patriots who
probably lead the nation in detennination in fiahlln&
communism and subversion and infiltration. !Jut they
throw up their hands at the prospect of fiahtina to pro-
serve our local ri,hts from state encroachment.
\iaybe it would help get local dander up a bit by tak-
ina another look at the arauments for and aaainst put-
in¥ the freeway through our town. The weiaht of evi-
dence for the conect loc ation a( the freeway ss sn.s-
penoous.
Just take a look at the arauments o f those who want
to bulldoze chat freeway throu&h ou r wonderful com-
munity:
"We need the freeway." Some claim that the freeway
ss essentsal for handling the local traffic load. If thas
araument is an smportant factor in the State Hagh~~tay
Comma ssson' s dec uaon, then the state has chanaed t ts
ba11c policy on freeways: that they are constructed b}
the state to handle through trafric. and that local traf-
fic as che respons1balaty of the local community.
"We need the freeway." State officials. and some
loca l city offi caal s , too, say that the freeway must ao
aenerally alona the route of the pre sent Coast Hwy. or
else tt v.ill not relieve the local tnffic COOJe<on.
The opposite side of the coin as more lilcely closer to
the truth : Locatina the freeway throuah our town will
on ly brin& much peaterhordes of motorists to ow area,
onto our crowded beaches, and on our bottleneck
streeu. Locat•nJ the freeway here ~~till not widen a
sin1l~ 011e or our local streets, nor wi ll it enlarae a
sanale one of our con, ested beaches.
"We need the freeway." The se same offictals say
th"t putiJng the free-.ay far enough inland to JO around

That's about It for arguments for a free1u y thtouah
our to wn. The argument is ltke a broken record; "We
need the freeway." If you press them real hard, you
maght tum up another humdinaer: "'Jovemor qrown and
the lltJhway Comm assson want a scenic coastal free-
way for California." That's too fantastic for rebuttal:
desu oyina some of the most maanificent view property
an ywhere in the world for a "scenic" speedway -a
portaon of which v.ould b e a sunken (reeway, a!fordina
a fine view only of the sky above.
<\nd why do we oppoae this freeway in our town: 'lie
don't want our community split in two by a race track.
We don't want a freeway bulldozed throuah hiahly de-
veloped. t.op value residential an d commercial property
when there i a vacant land just 4 milea inlancs. We don't
want the noiae, accidenu, sirens, fumes and smoa that
a freeway wi II aenerate in our wonderful town. We
don't WWit to brina thi1 monsuoaity tluouah our town
