And in the memtime, the mine Co., workina qujetly
1nd di liaently, aot euctly what it wanted: moat parti·
c:ularly that multi-million-dollar hiab level bridae -at
the upenae of you and me and all othet taJ&payera in
the entire atate of California. The l.rvine Co. aot aomo-
thina elae it w~nted very badly: the route t.brouah Fiflb
Ave. in Corona del Ma, which would neatly aplit our
community in two with lbe noise and furnea and brake·
aereechina and sirena of a super-racetrack at our door·
steps -aaainst the wishes of about 99 per cent of us
ordinary folks .
PC1baps you recall lhe Irvine Co. ar&ument for the
Fifth Ave. route: that so moeb plannina time and money
bad already been expended on the Irvine Town Center,
and the "bloc line" route around Harbor Vi ew Hills
wou ld chop off a painful chunk of lhe Irvine Center
site. I am easily able to choke back my tears, as I
consider the lou of the thous ands of hours of loyaJ
volunteer labor that went into the buildina of the Youlh
Center, a conmunity monument to civic duty, now in
the route of the freeway. ~lso in the path of the freo-
way bulldozers is another product of love md devotion
-the buildincs of the Episcopal Mission ncar the
Youth Center.
So what are you aoina to do about it, my friends?
Aro you juat aojna to take it, and a,.ree with Gov. Pat
9JOwn and bit political appointee• on die State Hip-
way Commi uion that they are the masters, and we are
just the aervants?
I th1nk It 11 time to form a c1ti zens freeway committee
dedicated to a detemuned campaian to keep the free-
way out of our wonderful community and to put it out
th ere 1n th e mland beanfields where it would not de-
stroy our maanifi cent reaidential development 1nd
business property
The lecal weapon in the hands of thi a ci ti zens com·
mittee can be a taxpayer's suit. challenaina the use
or public funds to conauuc t a hiah level bridae for the
particular benefit of the Irvine Co. I have checked with
some authorities on real estate prices, and the esti-
mates on the effect of a hiah level bridae on Upper
Bay values ranee from S~ increase all the way up to
lOI'fl. -double value' And this fantastic increase
would be made posaible throuah the taxes extracted
from the public for the construction of the h11h bridge.
Don't just &et mad. Oo sometlu na'

The origin of the title, .. Decora-

.. Cover Them With Flowers," by
Will Corleton, which traditionally
was reed at .. Decoration Day" sor·

was supposedly In 1882, when the
Grend Army obiected to the nome
"Decoration Da y." Perhaps th is
was to molce amends for their neg·

as the states In the south who do
observe "Decoration Day" call it
"Memorial Day." Perhaps th is over·

why, today , we observe this day to
