Proceata a,ainat bookt like the ••Dictionary of luneri-
can Slana'' alwaya aeem to aenerate t.be defcnae arau-
menta of freedom from cenaoubip, freedom of espreaaion,
and tbe riaht \0 read and be infonned. The accuaation of
"book. bumina" is the final reson in the counter-attack
aaain u the proteats.
Thia raiaea a critical question: "Who really are the
book bumeu'"
An analyaia made by Jobn T . Flynn in his book., "While
You Slept," pointa to the answer.
He liata 2q booka on the political situation in China
-ritten between 1 q43 and 194q -the years leadina t~
the lou of China to the communists. He describes 22 of
the boolta u pro-communist. 7 as anti-communist.
How C1id theae books fare with the leadina book review-
era' Thi 1 is what Mr. Flynn says:
"Every one of the 22 pro-communist books, where re-
viewed, received alowina approval in the literary reviews
I have named -that is, in the New York Times, the
Herald-Tribune, the Nation, the New Republic, and the
Saturday Rev1cw o( Literarure. And every one of the anti-
communist books wu either roundly condemned o r IJnor-
ed in the1e 18111e rev1ews."
That's how book bumina really happens -no blazena
fires, no n eed for removal of books ... because the boob
aren't there in t.be first place. The objectionable books
(objectionabl e w the liberal rev1ev.ers, that is) are prac-
tically eliminated by unfavorable reviews, or more effec-
tively, by ai lence. \1eanwhi le, there are favorable re-
views of "The Last Temptation of Chn st" and the
.. Dictionary of Am eri can Slana." and these reVIews are
an important facwr 1n selections by book store owners
and by librarians.
Just for one qu1ck test, try to locate a copy of "I Saw
Poland Betrayed," former ambassador .. ~n.'lur Bliss Lane's
eye-witness report of the conspiracy that caused the
commun11t take-over of that country. Thai book, with 11S
uaaic story, was killed by silence.

When concerned parents seek to remove Ci lth and Clb·
acenlly, aucb 11 the "01ctiooary of American Slana.''
from our public libraries, there comes the cry of .. cen-
aorshl p" from the outraaed liberals. 1ut what about the
thousands of boolcs that are not chosen at itll -not JUst
conservative books, but many others that JUSt do not
rate senous attention. Do the liberals then cry out "cen-
aorshlp'"' :-.lo: the word is "selection." In other words,
JUdament by liberals is "selection," JUdlfllent by con-
aerval!ves 11 "cenaorsrup," lind JUdifllent by the far
n&ht Will& IS "book bummJ."

Thoae who w1sh w have the freedom of access to books
of pomocraphy and Indecency c ertainly may have that
freedom. They are free to buy those books for themselves,
with their own money. ::Jut they do not have the riaht to
do me the moral inJUStJ ce of forcins me to contribute to
che evil throuah tuat1on for public libraries and public
schools.
Those who defend the selection of thi s obscene "Dic-
tionary" for our libraries are asked: "Are you willina to
read this book to your children. to your ne1 &hbor. to the
members of you r club?" Or to publish it in your news-
paper" The answer, I am sure, 1s "Of cowse not'" And
why not. "I:.Jecause it is not fit to read or publish pub-
licly." Yet th1s "practical handbook of sewal pe"cr-
sion" i 1 a fit chot ec fot public libraries, and achool
libraries' I don't believe any amount of accusation of
of "book bumtng" will make o\merican parents believe
such tWJ sted nonsense.

What makes a great O.d.
His sons (or daughten) and their accolades.
No longer is the greatest dad a knurled hand-
ed, red headed Scotsman or homesteadea who
bought his neighbor's land for nickel an acre.
The greatest dad you will ever know is prob-
ably showing his son how to pet a dog, feed a
cat, or tie a fly for tashing.
We've heard the stories over· the years about
dad who came west with grandpa on horseback,
or in a wagon, or e v e n daringly around the
Hom.
The greatest dad the wee ones around here
will know is the one who is with them now. Fish-
ing, sunning, or building a model of the Mercury
Capsule which will explore the outer reaches of
space.
Dad and his concept have changed along
with th~ times but the greatest dad of any gen-
eration is the dad who can spin the tales of yes ..
terday -riding the ma~ with the Pony Express -
escaping from lniun raids-or carving a new home

place out of the prairie grass, or talcing • tank
or truck or cycle across to the other side. Yes
perhaps the greatest dad would be the base-
baUer who pitched the no hitter -if he shared
it with his son-or daughter too.
Perhaps the greatest dad is the ordinary run
of the mill dad who is paying his bnls, repairing
the furniture for mother and the toys for the
kids.
The greatest Dad of any generation is the
one who shares the greatness -himself -his
talents -with his youngsten -he wt11 be great
because they won't be deGnquents.
we have a lot of tools for sharing -won
bench -garden -or builaeng. Drop by and
get good advice about a tool for Dad.

2out of 5 U.S.homes n owned debt-free
It is an amazing fact that forty per cent of all
American families who live in their own homes
own those homes free of any debt of any kind.
Savings and Loan Associations contributed to
this accomplishment by developing the modern
borne loan which is paid off in monthly
installments like rent. A home loan to fit your
individual needs is our business. Come see us.

Perhaps we're preiudiced, but we sort of figure
that the Dads in Newport are the best ... Where
else do you find the kind of a Dad who works in
an office during the week and is a skipper of a
boat on week-ends? Newport . Dads are very boat
conscious; so are their kids ... Whether it is going
out fishing on an all day commercial boat or on
their own boat, whether it is big or small. We like
learning about boats from you, Dad, and thank you
for all the other good things that you've tought us .
We've got all kinds of Dads in Newport ... some,
almost too young for the responsibility. The Great
Grand Dads can tell you that they married young.
Golly, a gal was an old maid at 18 ... sure, there
were times when the grub wasn't too plentiful.
There was usually plenty of fish in the bay. Of
course, the kids grew up all right because the diet
was supplemented with "The Bible and the razor
strap."
Dr. H•roltl O.chr, • Mew,.,t H•rhr ........ Dd, c .. tht tt.la 21-peuttd,
12-outtce yellowtail Jutte 6, 1963, while flahlltf abo.r4 the "S.O Reider."'
The young Grand-Dads of today were raised dur-
ing the depression; maybe they worked on some
of the old Newport fishing boats. You could be
sure of one thing while working on fishing boats;
when the catch was small, the crew would be sure
of not going to bed hungry that night. The hard-
ship that they faced during the depression insti lied
in them a need -the need to work a little bit
harder, to make it easier for their own little ones.
It was because of this that the young father of
today needs to stand tall. He wants to make it on
his own . At first, we worried about you! Now you
are proving yourselves in your own lives.
We salute you, today in Newport, all of you fine
Dads -and on Sunday throughout the nation.
