(Cootbwed from Pa. 1)
the picture that cAme to his mind was high rise In every
block along Coast Hwy., on both sides, and he didn't
like lt. Neither he nor the others of the 4-vote Njorlty
toolc mUch stock In the argument that economic reality
would conttol that horrendous possibility. The develop-
ers, Horace 8enjamln and Richard Jordan, and their real
estate agent, Bill Ring, and Councilman Dee Cook all
pointed out the obvious fact that economics would keep
too much•high rise from rising. Investors are not that
rash that they would risk their capital for an over-sup..
plied commodity. Lending Institutions just would not
make the cash available, because they have an obliga-
tion to their depositors to make sound Investments.
How ltferently the economic argument was .used when
the developers suggested that If the high rise is not ~
proved, they would have to put up something that would
be less desirable. They said that under present zoning
they could put up almost as much square feet of building
area wi thout the offstreet parking, and thus cause park·
lng and traffic congestion.
Now the show was on the other foot, and there was a
flip-flop on the economic argument, for Councilman Hans
Lorenz said, "You would never build commercial with-
out parking, because you would starve to death ."
I guess that is what Councilman Stoddard mean t when
he said that "economics is what you make of it." In
other words, if you need it to defeat some plan you don't
like, then use the economic argument. If economics gets
In the way of an idea of your own, ignore it.
I have heard the concern expressed by businessmen
that the Newport 13each City Council is causing grievous
harm to the Corona del Mar business district by thus kill-
Ing a major new development that could revitalize busi-
ness activity. The time is now for Corona del Mar, be-
cause soon in the future there wi II be the tremendous
Irvine Center nearby to attract the business away from
the merchants who have stuck it·out here so long.
The individtlal, private enterprise efforts to improve
our communi ty should receive the blessings of the City
Council, not roadblocks.

DEll IUIOI USWEIS AI ATIEIST
A soul shattering reply to an atheist was the highli~t
of last Saturday's "The Council Soeaks" program pre-
sented by the John 6trch Society at Uelodyland.
Clarence Man1on, for many years dean of the Law
School at Notre Dame University, and 'mem~ of the
Council of the John 13irch Society from the beginning,
was the first speaker. He outlined 4 supporting pillars
of Americanism, each one a direct opposite of communist
philosophy. These are the pillars:
1. Belief in the po wer, providence and mercy of AI·
mighty God. "American government was instituted as
man's agent for the protection of rights given by God.
The communist position is that there is no God."
2. Personal responsibility . "Americanism is based on
the capacity of the individual to control himself under
the moral law, and to exercise liberty according to God's
will. Under communism, the individual must surrender
his will, conscience and soul to communist dictatorship."
3. Constitutional government. "The constitution is the
means whereby government is kept in line, to serve as
man's agent to protect God's gifts. Under communism,
government is unlimited."
4. The right to own, control and transmit private pro-
perty. "Without this right, the entire structure of Ameri-
canism would be cashiered. The Communist Manifesto
sums up the whole purpose of communism in a single
sentence, abolition of private property."
Dean Manion then opened the meeting to questions from
the floor, and the first question came from an Orange
Coast College student who identified himself as an ath-
eist as well as an anti-communist. The student asked,
"What of us who are atheists?"
Dean Manion answered: "The logical, inevitable form
of government for you is communism."
I hope that the student Is doing a ~ot of soul searching.
I hope he will realize that he cannot defend an ar~ment
for Individual liberty unless he understands that God is
ttle author of liberty, that we "are endowed by our Crea-
tof with certain Inalienable ri~ts," that these rights are
eternal, unchangeable, and are not subject to change by
YOte of a mljorl ty, however overwhelming.

SALIS AND SIRVICI
3100 W. C..st Hlwey Ll._., 1-3471
THE FIRST THANKSGIVING was celebrated by
the Pilgrims after the first harvest in 1621. They
invited Massasoit and 90 of his Indian braves to
join them in their three-day feast of gratitude.
"Yes, my darling, it will soon be Thanksgiving. A
day of good th ings to eat, a chance to gi ve thanlts for
our Nny bl esslngs. In the beginning of our country,
many hardships and privations were suffered by our
ancestors, who soucj\t to build a new country in a
wlldemess, and an opportunity to worship God In their
own way. A bountiful harvest meant a winter free of
starvation and death. The Indians had helped the new-
comers to grow food In thi s new land, and it was only
fitting that this celebration should Include them. Go-
vernor Bradford set the day In New England In lf>21.
It was designated u a day of "T~nltsglvlng and
Prayer." During the revolution a day of national
thanksgiving was recommended by Cof\gtess, but It
wun't until 1864 that President Lincoln appointed a
day of thanksgiving, and since then the presidents
have Issued a presidential l)foclamatlon generally dt-
sl~atlng the last Thursday of November. So my dar-
ling, this Is why we shall feast and womlp our crea-
tor, In a special way next THU~SDAV, NOVEM-
BER 28, THANKSGIVING DAY, 1%3."
