~our attention is 1nvrted to a tetter on this page,
wrttteo by Werner Carlson, who IS teaching VICe-prtnci-
pal at the Abraham Lincoln junior high school.
First, I wish to commend him for writing. To those who
fret in ~ilence, I have no chance to correct any error, or
to submi t testimony for the defense.
Secondly, I w1sh to POint out that Mr. Carlson is shock·
ingly 1naccurate and reckless in his s tatements, ignoring
the elementary rules of evidence and fair play. This is
an attitude that IS not •n 1teep1ng with the resoonstble
oosit1on he holds in our community.
The letter ola1nly makes the tmplication that blame for
the assassination of our Pres1dent can be charged to the
John B~rch Society. Such accusation is totall y un founded,
and a l1bel agatnst the good reputation of the thousands
of patriOtic Americans who make up the membership of
the John Btrch Society. Mr. Carlson ts unw1tt1ngly repeat-
ing the line that was set forth by the Soviet press in
Communist Russia with1n a few hours of the assassina-
tion. It should not be necessary to state that the killing
was done by a confessed Manost who had defected to
Communist Russ1a and stated he was renounctng h1s
Amertcan c1t1zenship.
l am a member of the Jonn Birch Society, and I do not
bel ieve that the ends J.J stify the mean i and I do not
li:now of a s1ngle John BHch member or any other good
Amertcan NhO does so belreve. Mr. Carlson rs mak1ng a
sertous charge, without foundat1on, absolutel y contrary
to the record, and to the repeatedly stated ool1cy of the
Soc1ety. Mr. Carlson is again repeating the l1ne that has
been so successfully and 1ns1diously planted by the com-
munt-;ts 1n therr desperate attempt to dtscredit and de-
stroy the most effective anti-commun1st force 1n the
country.
I do recogn1ze many polretes and programs tn many
areJs t ~u r•ent act"on that can be jUStified only on the
doctrrne tt•at the ends do 1ustify the means. I urgently
suggest to Mr. Carlson that he turn h1s attack against
i41Ch PI.1Ctlces. For example: the gr.;aduated 1ncome w ,
fr-:.n each according to ability to pay, to each according
to nPed, the closed un1on shoo wh 1ch forces a worker to
