SOMe whett those &lrtd, shoi)'M)rn "CIIcttes from the left"
keep tumlng uo. So, to start the New Year r ight, let's
toe* at a few of th~. and hooe that we can dispose of
them:
IAYI ••uPS -This is the line that is at the top of
the list right now, and It is being aimed Indiscriminately
at us conservatives. The "logic" is very simple: criticism
equals hate; therefore crltl cl sm of Admin I stratton policies
and personnel' Is a terrible thing. We who are criticizing
the Administration are "setting American against Ameri-
CMI," and "creating suspicion."
This "logic" Is blind in the left eye, because criticism
does not seem to equal hate when it is uttered by the
llber~l establl shment. lt appears that conservatives are
fair game for any degree of invective. By way of example,
and If you want to sample some first rate hate peddling,
just look over Senator Tom Kuchel's choice of words in
his May 2 Senate speech on "The Fr~ght Peddlers." I
know some Democrats, too, who take no back seat in
linguistic combat. Just listen to Senator Hubert Humphrey,
Of Adlai Stevenson, or ex-president Harry Truman. Their
techniques differ, that IS all: Hubert does 1t as with a
rapier; Adlai w1th a stiletto; Truman w1th a meat ax. But
it all fits in the cl1che defin1t1on of ''hate."
FASCim -This cliche from the left goes I ikt this:
"We condemn all ~xtremc sts; ttle communists on the leftr
and the fasc1sts on the right." The inference is plain:
The right wing is alun to fascism, and therefore it poses
the peril of totalitarianism. ThiS is the line that has been
c.1refully pu t out over the years by the communists -to
turn the spotlight away from the communists, and to label
the conservatives w1th the smear tag of fascist.
The truth is that communism and fasccsm and totalctari-
anism are all of the left; conservatism, l1 berty, personal
freedom, and llmtted 90¥rnment are all of the rtght. Judge
by bas1c standards and see for yourself.
How about religion' God IS den1ed, and free exerc1se of
religion is abr~dged under communism and fascism. God
is acknowledged as the author of liberty and as the
source of our 1nal1 enaol e 11ghts oy the conservatives;
free exercise of rel1910n IS guaranteed under law.
How about prooerty nghts1 The r1ght to own property IS
severely l1m1 ted, or den~ed altogether, under commun1sm
and fasc1sm. Property rights are defended by con-s~tva
tives as the corner stone of all other rights.
Conse?'vatism and fascism are as far apart as right and
wrong, and as incompatible as good and evil.
NOISE AID IUGOY DAYS-This cliche from the left
was u~ed against S.OatOf Bob T ~ft. who was said to hav~
the best mind of th~ 1 ~h century. Now the retort from the
left is that we mustn't go back to the horse and buggy
days.
The truth of the ma tter 's that 1t 1 s the I eft that is try 1ng
to turn us back to the lqth century , and farther back. The
liberal establishment IS try1ng to foist on us the banlcruot
phi losoPhies and unworkable econom1c sctiemes of the
welfare state. H1story of ages ~ast have proved them to
be wr ong, but still they pers1st w1th their schemes to
make the government orovtde and thus to underm1ne self
reliance and 1ndiv1dual 1n1t1at1ve.
We conservatives are res1st1ng the efforts to turn us all
back to those "horse and buggy days." And at the same
time we hold fast to the eternal truths that remain the
same through atl ages, because they are from Alm1ghty
God.
My New Year suggestion to the liberal establishment:
Open that 1 eft eye, and see yoursel ves as others see you.
* * * AID .. ERE DO YOU STAID?
It is good for a newspaper to set forth 1ts stand on
basic issues, and i commend the Daily P1lot for so d01ng
on its Dec. 27 ed1ton ~l page.
After listing ObJec tives of the John Bttch Soc1 ety, as
reported in a Cht~Sttan Sc1ence Mon1tor 1nterVlew w1th
John Rousselot, western reg1onal governor of the society,
the Pilot editorcal wr1ter sa1d: "Rousselot's comments
make 1t clear noth1ng has really changed ins1de the John
Birch Society," and that Robert Welch "would rather
tum American against Amer~can by sow1ng seeds of sus-
picion than advance a rational campa1gn for better gov-
ernment.''
That appears to me to be a clear cut stand by the Pirot
against the following object1ves as reported by Mr. Rous-
selot ~d printed in the Pilot editorial :
