TilE "rOUR rREEDOIW'
Last Sunday's "Freedom University of the Air" over
Channel 5 offered a program that should impress even the
"far out" liberal.
The speaker was Ma x Slcousen, brother of the more widely
known Cleon Skousen, the noted writer and lecturer
a"nd author of "The Naked Communist." The topic
was "The Four Freedoms" -not the Franklin Delano
version, but rather the elements of the basic freedom,
which is the freedom to choose.
FOR's list included "freedom from want" and "freedom
from fear." These are not freedoms at all, bu t instead
they served as a soft sell techniQue for invi ting the go-
vernment to intervene into personal duties and responsi-
bilities. Max Skousen warned against this concept of
"freedom from" because 1t tends to taJ(e away the indi-
vidual 's necess1ty of mak1ng h1s own decisions. He sa1d
that freedom means s•mPiy the free dO'T' t::> choo se, whiCh
cart~es w1th 1t the reward f::>r tre right cho•ce, and puniSh-
ment for the .vrong ChoiCe. Then "e l1stect the "Four Free-
doms" clS JOPI•ed to econOIT'tC fe: the fre edom Ill to try,
(2) to sel 3 • o.;y 4) !:> fa . And this las[ IS the
po.ver that dii.,PS Jn :o success.
If you analyZP t"e ~tJeCtl '>'es J ' the 1beral s, you will
find that the freedom ::>I choice 1 s under attack: from many
di rect1ons. You can see this in such Programs as civil
rights l egislation, the Rumford Hous•ng Act, graduated
income tax, social security, urban redevelopment, crop
controls, medicare, and the many other "dO good" plans
-all promoted as being tor the public good, but all based
on the surrender of the right to choose. Su rrender al ways
means that someone else gains something, and in this
case it is oower to make decisions.
When we retain our right to make our own decisions, we
suffer or enjoy the conseQuences in a relatively short
time. Thus we are guided in future actions. But if we sur-
render this right to choose, the dangers from bad decisions
do not become apparent as soon as they did before. Mr.
Skousen said that th is nation cannot remain free unl ess
its people can recogni ze the conseQuences of mistakes
soon enough to correct the mistakes.

"PAY TV'' VS. "FfiEE TV"
Speak ing of los1ng the freedom to choose, there is a suo-
den flurry of activity against "pay TV" and an energetic
''crusade 'tor free TV". A state-wide campaign, obviotJsly
carefully planned, is producing considerable orinted matter
in suPPOrt of the "crusade."
A cit izens commi ttee is promoting an initiati ve petition
to repeal a 1%3 state law authorizing pay television pro-
grams, on the grounds that pay TV is against the public
interest. This is Quite a preposterous project in a nation
that has prospered so richly from private enterprise.
If TV viewers are willing to pay extra cash for good pro-
grams of their own choice, they certainly should have the
right to do so. If any pr~vate enterpriser is willing to risk
a venture in pay TV, he should have the right to try, and
to succeed or fail. If the so-called "free TV" suffers as
a result, then 1t deserves to su ffer for its bum programs
and objectionable commercials. But much more likely
would be the considerable Improvement in the Quality of
ptograms, and commercials -which would definitely be
"in the pub I ic interest."
WHAT WOULD THEY THINK?
