He re viewed the 4 basic freedoms that he had described In his previous t.allc; the freedom to try, to sell, to buy, and to fail -all based on the freedom to choose. Now, in place of these "freedoms to," the do-gooders promote their "freedoms from." Max Skousen said there are 4 of these too: (1) freedom from failure, or from insecurity; (2) fr eedom from buying, or from "exploitation"; (3) freedom from selling, or from "competition"; (4 ) fteedom from try- Ing, or from "striving." In each case the price to be paid for these "goodies" is the right to choose for yourself. Also surrendered is the great motivating force of competition, and in its place is control by government force. In the "freedom from" society, the energetic and efficient citizen QU ickly sees that there is no POint in putting out extra effort to suc- ceed, because the goods he produces are parcelled out to the "have-nots." With personal incentive gone, the "benevolent" government eventually has to resort to naked force to keep the machinery of production going. The :esson should be clear for all to understand. The history of past failures of "do~ood" governments should bring the lesson clearly home. And the incredible success of free enterprise economy ought to settle the matter be- yond ~i spute. • • • It is of interest to local listeners that the "Fr~tdom University of the Air" program i s introduced by our erst- while ri va l publisher, Ben Reddick, once at the helm of the NewPOrt Harbor News-Press, no w pub I i sher of the Valley Times, sPOnsor of the TV program. "The Freedom University" goes on at 10 p.m. Sundays over Channel 5. • • • I I earned during the past week that Max Skousen con- ducts a course on the principles of freedom, and one of his students •s Don Huddleston, Harbor Area resident and real estate developer. Don has taken the Skousen course and has studied specifically the Principles set forth in the TV program of the past 2 Sundays. He has made the presentation to local clubs and organi zations, and he is willing and able to talk some more. Call him at 548-5541. • • • LET'S LIVE DAIGEROUSLY "PrePOsterous" is a mild word for describing the squab- ble over a sequin sign in Corona oel Mar. The ruling, as i t now stands, i s that the littl e sign at Jordan's Pet Shop comes under the banned category of sign s mo ved by wi nd pressure. The letters are b to 8 inches high, and each has a singl e row of tiny seQutns that dO, indeed, move slightly tn the wino. Only valid rea son for outlawtng a properly located sign is danger to public safety. For example, a red or green flashing sign that could be mi staken for a traffic signal should certainly be prohibited -and it is. But here we have an exam pie of reasoning to the effect that a moving sign, and more speci fically, a sign moved by w4nd, is a public menace because i t might di stract a driver on Coast Hwy. and perhaps cause an accident. If there is any other purPOse for putting up a sign than to distract attention, I don't know what it could be. And if this obj ection against distraction Is to be taken seri - ously and followed through to its logical conclusion, where can it stop? It would be clearly forbidden to allow an awning to flap in the wind, or to have a moving manne- quin in a store window, or to fly the American flag along a bu siness street, or perhaps even to open an office door In view of a dri ver, who obviously must be quite a dolt. A moving distraction that ought to be legislated out as a dastardly danger is a moving car or bicycle passing by on the other side of the street. And there art many far greattt distractions that our distressed lawmakers had better tend to right away: How about those toreador ~t clltd gals strutting by on the sidewalks, or the bikini bUUtlts on the streets on summer days! And certai"IY MQUin dresses must go! Perhaps the entire deadly peril taft be overcome by a simple law making It a C8C)Iul of. flftst to tum the head wh ile drl vlng. For 4-tlme lostrs, •tre could be an attachment on the driver's sut to hold Itt head rigid. wtten you pass by JordM's Pet Shop, be wre to ttt out ,ow bl·foc•ts or your 191 glass, 1nd sti what It Is ltat Is so Pt.tUous.
