TilE PHOIE 1001 COITIIOYEIISY There's been a lot of emotional opposition against the Pacific Telephone Co. proposal to divide the Orange County directory into 5 separate books. Last week's de-- bate at the Newport 8each City Council meeting was an example, and considerable protest was expressed. E ven so, and despite repeated impol ite interruptions, Bill Clay of Pacif ic Telephone was able to offer anum- ber of important reaso~ why the change should be made. And adding weight to hi s remark s was his observation that "we (the phone company) are in as fine a position as anyone to determine the needs of phone users; we have had years of studies on handl ing the tremendous phone traffic in Orange County." After listening again to Bill Clay Monday evening at the Corona del Mar Chambe! of Commerce meeting, and to PTT official Earl Ricker, I f1nd mysel f Qu i te 1n agree- ment with th em. Of course we would all like to have a single handy di rectory to use for Orange County calling. But that is out of the Question, because it already contains 2,104 pages, and the next one would be too big for binding. to say nothing of carrying. The statisti cs on phone use, as related by the 2 PTT officials, provide convincing evidence that · the bulk of dialing is local, and therefore the major need for a di rectory is local. These figures pertain both to busi- nesses and residences and thu s both to the yellow pages and to the white pages. A smaller directory means more frequent use of the dire ctory, including greater use of the yellow pages for locating business firms. A great majority of the businesses could save on advertising cost, because the advertising rate for the reduced circu- lation would be considerably less. Most of the businesses and services would not need listings beyond the local directory. For those who need county-wide listings in the yel·low pages, smaller ads would do the job, because of the greatly reduced size of the yel low page sections. Perhaps as high as 90" of both the resident users and businesses would gain a decided advantage from the Phone Co. proposal -through greater speed in finding numbers, greater ease in locating firms in the yellow pages, better readibility because of larger type, more up-to-date listings because of reduced printing time, lower advertising rates because of smaller distribution area. The weight of evidence is for cutting Uf. the dire ctory. Straight Tall< I By Tom Anderson E' l"l\ Con~rt'\\lll3n and ~·n ator \dtn 'otrd fnr tlw <OIIt· muni~l ·tn~plrt·d ..
