The Harbor Council of Churches has gone on record against
the initiative amendment which seeks to repeal the Rumford
Housing Act.
Twenty local churches were represented in the 2q to 0 vote
for a resolution urging "official boards and constituencies
of member churches to oppose the proposed amendment."
In supportof this statement of policy, the Council of Church
resolution called attention to Christian ethics and the Bibli-
cal law of love.
The Council of Chu rches has gl ven the correct reasons,
but has a rrived at the wrong conclusion. It is particularly
unfortunate that such a decision comes from a group that
should base its actions solidly on the gospel preached in
the lord's Book.
There is nowhere in the Bible any justification for the use
of fo rce to fulfill the law of love. Indeed, the scripture quo-
ted by the Council of Chu rches -"Love worketh no ill to
his neighbour" -is a plea to strike the Rumford Act off
the statute books and to pray for justice to come from the
hearts of men.
Our lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, who gave the great
commandment that "thou shalt love the Lord thy God" and
"thy neighbour as thyself," nowhere says that this must
be brought about by law, or by any other use of fo rce. He
gives very explicit warning that the end does not justify the
means, for "neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit."
No show of force, nor any amount of legislation, wi ll bring
about the desired result of love of neighbor for neighbor, for
as a man "thinketh in his heart, so is he."
There has .been much improvement in human relations In the
past century, but we are now seeing these gains being swept
away in the bitterness resulting from such efforts as the
Civil Rights legislation, the Rumford Bill , and forced inte-
gration.
The answer must come from our hearts; there Is only one
way -to find the truth, "and the truth shall make you free."
This is the word from the Lord Himself, and He takes care
that His words be not misunderstood. How is it that "ye
shall know the truth"? By bel ieving in Him, and continuing
in His word, and then are ye His disciples indeed.
There is the answer; not in any legislation that seeks to
generate a good wi II by threat of force. There can come an end
to discrimination and hat red only when the word of the lord
has been accepted throughout the land. That is the true mi s-
sion field for all who believe that "love worketh no ill to
his neighbour."
