TO "CI YOUII CU.DATE There is an important election coming up Tuesday -the choice of 3 city councilmen who will be deciding on vital issues for the next 4 years. I have heard a number of queries about whom to vote for, and how to make the choice. Hefe are some su gge s-- tions. Most valid basis is, of course, your own personal know- ledge of the candidates-in as many fields of endeavor as possible; civic, social, business, political, religious. It is from per sonal knowl edge that I am making my own choice. Some of you have heard th ese candidates at the public meetings; some of you know them personally; you may have met them in business dealings. You have thus established an important basis for judgment. A great many voters depend on I ess direct methods at arriving at a dec! sion, since there is, after all, a I imi t to the opportunity to make personal contacts. The jud9- ment of others therefore is of great influence. Perhaps most decisions are reached in this manner -by heeding the recommendations of citizens who are well known by the voter, and in whose judgment the voter has great confidence. For this reason the lists of endorsements are must read-- ing for voters. The nature of the candidate is revealed to a great extent by the endorsers -business people, civic I eaders, professional men, maybe your next door neighbor ••• and publishers, too. One note of caution: Do not be mis-led by any last min- ute accusations, rumors, or insinuations. Such tactics have been used l n previous elections here. Just remember that it is poor campaign argument that is timed for the last mi nute -too l ate to permit a reply. Finally -go and vote. Your one vote does count. And voting at the grass roots level, with awareness of the issues at stake, is your chance to help gu ide the future of the community in which you live. • • • IIECO.UDAnGIS 01 CAIDIDATES Here is the way l will mark my ballot, basing my jud9- ment in each case on lon9-time personal acQuaintance and observation of the candidate. District 1 ..•. AI forgit, business-nan. AI is a successful local businessman, has a wealth of knowl edge about the problems and potential of Newport Beach, because he has been right there in the heart of it for many years. He has given of his t1me, money and energy to ward the betterment of our community. District 5 ...• Uee ...:ook, incu..,bent councilman. Dee is unopposed for re-election, and that in itself is an endorsement of his 4 years on the City Co unci I. Ob- viously he does not need your vote to win this one, but here is a chance to express your approval wl th a vote of confidence by placing the "X" after his name. Di1trlct 6 ..•• Elton Denner, generol controctor. Elton typifies the dedicated American pat riot that we need in all levels of government -to preserve and strengthen the conservative princi pies that have madt our nation great. He is a native Orange Countian, a per- manent resident of our City of Newpart Beach for the past 1~ year s, an Air Co ros veteran of World War II, active church work er, a bustnessman wi th years of experience in the growth and development of this area. My own jud9- ment of El ton as a City Council candida te comes from personal acquaintance, business relationship, and church work. I am pleased to add my name as one of his endor - sers, along with the many others who pledge their support -Lucy and Andy Carey, Duncan St ewart, Merri II and Sally Butler, Jack Bidwell, Ur. and Mr s. John Klug, Hudd and Shirley Saffell, Ur. and Mrs. Mi It Shedd, and the hundreds of other local citizens who are asking you to cast your vote for Elton Denner. • • • •'YES .. VOTE 01 lltE PIIOPOinOIS There are 2 propositions on the ballot. I am going to vote "yes" on both: for the permission to offer city--owned land for public auction, and for the charter amendment PfOYiding that changing councilmanic districts can't "gerrymander" an incumbent councilman out of office. •••••• THI IFNCTIVI WAY Lo C.r•II4Je (lll.l CHIJ•• R:tlhC'r th:tn 11t't up t'labor.ut' lc'f-'li~tic machin<'ry to prol<'CI rights and vxtal (alme~s wr would prdt'r th:u cit.Vens cxamin<" tht•lr m ... n rono;cicnce, an<J try to UJli'OOt lhdr pn"judiccs.
