It Isn't often that l wish the Ensign to be a daily news-
paper, because weekly publication is grief enough. But
there do come such times, and election time is a painful
example.
As In past elections, there came the last minute scare
tactics -so timed that there was no adeQuate opportunity
for public discussion and rebuttal. That i s a time when
conservatism needs a dally voice, so that charges such
as were raised by the Costa Mesa newspaper can be
answered.
The Pilot devoted almost all of it s Friday pre-election
editorial to "That Birch Question," assailing Elton Den-
ner for his membership in the John Birc h Society. Mr.
Denner's repeated declarations of conservative, patriotic
pr inciples had been dismissed by the Pilot the day before
as "parroting plati tudes in pat talks." Apparently a firm,
unwavering stand on basic principles is not to the liking
of the Pi lot editorial writers, who expressed oreference
for change (they called it "growth") in a cand idate's
line of thought.
For the attack on Elton Denner, the Pilot cited a state-
ment in Robert Welch's Blue Book , that "democracy is
merely a deceptive phrase, a weaoon of demagoguery and
perennial fraud." The Pilot wondered how anyone could
serve the democratic process as a c i ty councilman if he
had such contempt and disregard for democracy.
More to the point is the question: How can anyone in the
responsible position of editorial writer for a newspaper
be so iII informed about the nature of the government of
our nation? 1 wa s of thA opinion that just about any
schoolboy knows that our wonderful nation is a REPUB-
LIC, not a democracy. It was i n the light of the correct
definitions of these 2 words that Robert Welch made the
remarks recorded in the Blue Book of the John Birch
Society.
Credit i s due to the Pilot, however, for gi ving Elton
Denner space in Monday's edition to po int out the error
In the editorial. Mr. Denner's re marks offer a valuabl e
and timely reminder of the reasons why our Founding
Fathers established a Republic. Here i s Mr. Denner's
statement as published In the Pilot :

Except for the Pilot1s slur against the fitness of Elton
Denner to hold the office of councilman, the election
campaign was coroduc ted generally in good taste and wi th-
out bitterness ..• Peter Whitehead enlivened the public
meeting s with his comments on the Upper 8ay develo~
ment and county dock lease •.• Lindsley Parsons, who
won handily in District b, made an issue of the need for
harmony between Council and city manager; Mr. Whitehead
and Jay Wall also brought up this issue, with reference
to what they called Councilman Dee Cook's interference
In administrative manners .•• Dee Cook came back with
comments of his own at the final candidates' meeting Fri-
diy evening at the Youth Center, saying that the charge
of Interference Is "hogwash,'1 and asserting that the dis-
sension has been caused by failure to follow pol icy laid
down by the Council ••• Councilman Cook made quite a
Nwlng In the election returns although he was unop-
posed, which normally means that voters don1t pay par-
ticular attention to marking that portion of the ballot. ••
Ht made the remark after the returns were in that he'll be
QUftt during the next 4 yurs; l'm not going to hold my
breath on that one, and Indeed, 1 do not care for quiet
~ncllmen, or for a quiet Councll1 which 1 am sute It
won't be, for we still have Jay Stoddard, and It's a sure
bet also that AI F019lt won't clam up during the Council
INitlngs tlthtt ••• lt takes a bit of noise now and then
tD cit• the aJr ••• Best wishes, Council!
