We can at t be indebt ed to Senator Thomas Kuchel ilL
setting us straight as to why he is nerYOus about th-;r
prospects of a Goldwater victory and why he wants the
Republican candidate to be Nelson Rockefeller.
A news item from Washington this week reported Sena-
tor Kuchel as saying that he believes a victory by Sena-
tor Goldwater In the Califo rnia presidential primary
"would destroy the pol icy of moderation in our party" .••
and "would mean Bb votes at the convention to repudiate
the kind of platform we have had over recent years."
Precisely so! For once, Senator Kuchel is ex.tt.emely
right! Barry Go I dwatler is seeking to turn our natlon"from
the policy of "moderation" that has been leading us re-
lentless! y to defeat after defeat. "Moderation" can be
defined in many ways, but the main ingredients are "ac-•
commodation" with the communists, "centralization" of
governmental power, "erosion" of the dollar by deficit
spending, gracilal surrender of national sovereignty.
A lengthy memo from Senator Kuchel's office outlines
a number of issues that Barry Goldwater has opposed,
among them being the United Nations loan of 1%2, the
Arms Control and Disarmament Act of l%1, the Nuclear
Test Ban Treaty, the Foreign Assistance Act of 1%4,
civil rights leg islation, expansion of the rural electrifi-
cation program, debate limi tation in the Senate, federal
funds for schools, federal medica re legislation.
Conservatives are familiar with these issues, and know
that Barry Goldwater in each case was voting his con-
viction and faith in our constitutional Republic and
against the encroachments of a welfare stat e.
Senator Kuchel's timely memo should win a lot of extra
votes for Barry Go I dwater.

I c an see some merit In giving brand new councilmen a
tough initiation on their first night in the Council Cham-
bers, but this midnight business Is too much!
It was at the stroke of 12 that the Newport Beach City
Council called it Qu its Monday evening, and that was
possible only by speeding pell-mell over the last half of
the agenda.
Di s cussion is fine, but there was much chatter that
could have been considerably condensed, and some com-
pletely vaporized. The dawdling and bfcket~ng-over <rtew
items resulted in a super-hasty rush through oroblems
that deserved more thoughtful treatment.
NO SUISTITUTE FOR VICTORY

T hrre "'as no sub~titutr for victory with Macr\rthur.
In the Coil><! of Korea, victory was denied. The no-win
policy im posed in Ko n·a went against principle with Mac-
Arthur and led to his recall from the military field. Today,
looking at a di50rderly and dangerous world, it often seems

NO GIFT FROM THE GOVERNMENT
Somenet (Po.) America•
I n reality, thrre is no such thing as a federal go,em-

E'ery dollar eH'f)' dime-of e'ery so-called go,·em-

Govem mrnt is not a producer. It is simply a spender -
spending the hard-earned dollars of those who work to
