IIAIID SLID.II FOil 1011 ISSUE The re-run of the once--defeated S21h million Newport Beach school bond Issue Is having some rough sledding. Public apathy appears to be one of the big obstacles. And there is also evidence of growing resistance to bond elections, as shown by the "no" votes here and in other areas of the country • .:fhere are limits to the burden that the hard pressed voters can continue to bear. I have heard expressions of resentment over the fact that the defeat of the bond Issue I ast Feb. 11 caused no change in the plans, no effort to cut down the cost. It would have helped a great deal if the school trustees had acknowledged the attitude of the voters by paring down the total. That is what private enterprise has to do when faced wit h f inancing difficulties. These are hard facts to face -that school bond$ are meeting taxpayer resistance. But it would be "burying heads in the sand" to ignore this obstacle as we enter the final weeks before the June 2 decision. • • • THE UVEL lAY HELP AliT Once again the Newport Beach Council meeting stretch- ed Into the late evening hours Monday night, close to midnight. There is an unusual assortment of collabora- tors in the oack , but al together they provide a testimonial tD the strength of Mr. Conservative from Ari zona. They know he i s the man to beat, and they know he must be beaten i f the policies of the liberal establishment are to be continued. That Is why I want to see Senator Goldwater nominated by the Republicans, and then elected president by all patriotic Americans -because the doctrines of the esta- blishme~ must be repudiated. We are going to be In deep trouble in our efforts to preserve our independent constitutional Republic if the conservatives do not win in November. I do not mean that a defeat will cause an immediate burial of our Republic. That can still take some time. But t see a I most no hope of turn ing back the drift toward the welfare state and full-blown socialism unl ess it is done this November with a resounding vote fo r conservatism. If there ever was reason for repudiating the political, social and economic policies of the party in power, the time is now. The evidence is at hand, all around us: the mounting national debt, the continuing Inflation, the steady erosion of the ourchaslng power of our dollar, the encroachment of federal authority in local affairs, accom- modation with the enemy rather than resistance, and the resulting surr ender i n the face of communist advances in all corners of the world. In foreign policy, the appeal of the appeasers Is based on cowardice-the fear of thermo-nuclear war, the "bette1 red than dead" philosophy. In domestic policy, the ap- peal is directed to man's greed and covetousness-sta~ with brutal frankness in a recent speech by President Lyndon Johnson: "We are going to try to take all the money that we think Is unnecessarily being spent ~nd take It from the haves and give it to the hav~nots that need i t so much.'' That is the philosophy that must be rej ected in the November election. L et's vote for a Republic rather than for a welfare state, for victory rather than for appeas~ ment. We may not have another chance. I Straight Tall< I WI COULD IICOMI UNDO .. ly , .... All •• ,.. J( you·~ uoanplo)'ed, ~lax and enjoy it. Can machines ~ally do almost everythin~ now done by and for man? Like turning off lights in the White Howe? And, if a machine could find out how to do this. could it t,ll the American people? The only .olution. thex "JOcial acientists" claim, is for the go~mment to divide up all the money equally and give e~ry penon an equal amount each payday, work or not. Now th~ cybernetic crackpots did not invent this panacea. It was invented way back in Uncle Tom days by a Nljii"O named Ra.sna. Rastus was tellin~ his bos.' whv he wu for Huey Long. In keeping with •'J>rol'maive" thinking, there are a number of refinements which should be made in this rnornentoua propoul by Rastw and the "economists" who ttole his idea. Fint, il has to be politically feasible. Has our State Department cleared it with Mr. Khrushchev and Mr. Tito and Mr. FuJ • bri!bt? Does it have the blessing of the three Big Bu&inessmen who own the JohftiOD Wheeler Deal -Billie Sol Estn, Bobby Balter and Walter Reuther? And Rastu$ failed to take into consideration man's inate desire for challenge and incentive. Since mi· lions of us will have to undergo forced idle- !lt'W and richt's, wouldn't it be un-American to deny the people willing to be the most idle to make the most money? There could be an appropriate penaJty for th~ who in· sisted on working, of hall-pay for overtime instead o! double-pay. Instead ol slowdowns. there could be backUJ». Instead of making billions of dollan of goods to mak.e more and more foreign enemies, why not buy the things our enemies have made and unmake them here? And unworken who unmade the most things in the most amount of time would, under our Union unmade system, be unlaid off. "He guina divide up all de mone~ equal and make ever' man a king!" "But Rastus.'' the boss reminded, ·'don't vou know that you'd ~t your nost in the juR on Saturday night, end up in a crap ~e and lose it all?" "Maybe S~J,·· replied Rastus, "but as I undentands it, Mr. Huey gonna divide it up equaJ allain ever' Moncby mawnin !" EQUAL ON ~ONOA Y This anti-poverty plan is somewhat moff honest than Mr. Johnson's, ruturaily. In- stead of 5tealing an additional $10 billion from the "haves" to give to the "have-nots;· this anti-poverty pi'"Oil:ratn 'teals on an every- Monday basi,. ( nstead of steal in~ from the rich to give to the poor. this plan would eliminate the rich. except for the corporate Socialists -..ho would nm e"erythlng. (The only place in our country where there will be no unemployment i~ in the ~ovemment.) The thjngs our mass unprodueing system could unmake could be stored in Billie Sol Estes' empty bins and in Bobby Baker's apartments for d~rving 3eeretaries.
