There Is a fundamental Issue Involved in the 2-tlme de-
feat of the Newport Beach elementary school bond pro-
posal. I do not bell eve that it Is prlmaril y a quarrel about
the money Itself, although there is a growi'ng resistance
to the seemingly endless rise In the over--all tax bite. I
believe that a much more im portant factor is a growing
concern over the nature of educational philosophy, and
a growing awareness that something Is wrong.
This Is a subject that no one seems to be willing to
talk about out loud. Yet I hear many private complaints from
parents who are concerned about attitudes of some tea-
chers, the content of some of the films that are shown In
classrooms, the liberal slant in textbooks. "I don't want
to raise a fuss," these parents say, "because my children
are still in school."
These are not me rely the views of alarmist or extremist
parents. I believe that it can be safely and fairly stated
that the philosophical atmosphere in our public schools
is generally I eft of center. 1 can attest to the slanted
views in textbooks in the fields of government, economics
and hi story. The textbooks thatl have personally examined
reveal a marked leaning towa rd governmental involvement
in economic and social problems, toward national involvement
in one-world government by way of the United Nations.
There is a downgrading of nationalism, a lack of appre-
ciation of the tremendous effectiveness of a free , private
enterprise economy, and a lack of conc tfn o ver the growth
of big government.
A surprisingly frank statement of the liberal evaluation
of public schools was given back in 1q53 by Major Joseph
S. Clark Jr. of Philadelphi a, writing in the J uly Atlantic
Mon thly: "Fortunately, free compulsory education work s
for the liberals ..• Big bu siness has not yet taken over
American education ... Spiritually and economically, youth
Is conditioned to respond to a liberal program of orderly
policing of our society by government, s ubject to the
popular will, In the interests of social justice."
That final sentence expresses the liberal conviction
wtlich has seemingly captured most of our textbook writers ,
communication media, and opinion molders. The rebuttal
is raised, of course, that such liberal conviction is the
right and just approach to the problems of today. 1 wi II
agree that it appears to be the maJoritY. thought fo r today,
but not therefore the correct one. 1 believe that we are on
the right track in the turn toward the right, toward conser-
vative convictions-a trend that is being so dramatically
demonstrated by the growing following of Mr. Conserva-
tive himself, the senator from Arizona.
1 believe that a return to conservatism is the sign of the
times, and that this should be reflected in schools as
well as in politics.
