The wheel that squeaks the loudest gets the most grease. And so it Is that the Coun- cil feels Itself obligated tD give serious consideration to spec ial Interest groups that come up witt\ requests for a chunk of the city tax funds. The speci fic requests made during the final night of budget deci slon were for tennis courts and a community meeting hall. I found It dl smaylng to note that no member of our Ci ty Council offered the logical and correct rebut- tal: That it is not the responsibility of the ci ty, nor the proper use of tax funds, to build tennis courts or meeting halls. If such requests are granted, where can the line be drawn? There will be demands from the bowlers, the polo players, archers, badminton fans, golfers, and tlddlt- dt-winlc enthusi asts. And consider the hundreds of clubs and organizations whO can ask the city to provide them a place to meet. Our Counci l could do with a little more practice in say- ing: "No, that Is not a proper expendltureof public funds." And eQUally important, those speci al Interest groups can practice some restraint, and stop running to the City Coun- cil for tax money to finance their pet projects. Instead of "pressure groups," clamoring fo r financial aid and adding to our tax burden, I et's have some "un-pressure groups" who will promise to keep their hands out of the public till. • • • "WilY lOT YIOTOIIT?u Some of the most painful and tearful writing now beifl9 suffered by newspaper readers comes from the pens of such an qui shed I eft-of-<: enter commentators as Pub I is her Ralph McGill. But at times through their tears, a glimmer of grim truth does come forth. A recent column by Lefty McGill verified what most of us right-wingers have been saying for a long time about the Roosevelt-Truman-Eisen- hOwer-Kennedy-Johnson policy on communism. Said Mr. McGill: "Our national obj ect ive remains the same -to contain communi sm." I'm for Barry Goldwater, who says, "Why not victory?" • • • llcnl WHAT IE AilE fiBHTIIO Dr. W.S.
