Til 0•11 -II YIAIS AIO -AID TIDAY This Issue of the Ensign Is Volume lb, No • .52, which n.eans that we ate completing the lbth year of publishing our newspaper. We put out that Vol. 1, No. 1 Issue on Friday, the 13th of August, back In 1948. (And 1 do not mean Ule Impersonal editorial "we" In the above statements; It's mighty personal, because It refers to Peggy and myself, still editors and publishers, plus a number of other assorted r~ sponslbllltles.> There's been considerable change In the newspaper picture since that day lb years ago. Newport Beach then had 2 other newspapers: The Newport-Balboa News.-Times, published for many years by old-timer Sam Meyer, and the Newport Harbor Press, published by recent newcomer Ben Reddick. Up on the hill In Costa Mesa was a struggling little weekly, the Glob~Herald, just purchased from Pop Ludi by Walter Bur- rough~ and Dave Ring. Still another publication was a weekly shopping news put out by Carl Veneman. With the hindsight of the present day newspaper shuffle, I find It somewhat ironic and amusing to recall that I turned down an offer of a job with the Los Angeles Times In Janu- ary, 1948, to accept a job offer from Walt Burroughs. And so it was that 1 came down here to the Harbor Area to become the editor of the Glob~Herald, taking over from Sellm Frank- lin, ~" had decided to turn his attention to the study of law. e!:f9Y was editor for a time too, whi I e I was recovering from a slipped disc operation. I eventually was back at the Glob~Herald, not to become the editor again, but to get on with the ground work for another project. That project was the Ensign, wh ich we started in partnership with Walt Bur- roughs, I ater buy lng it for ourselves, b months I ater, In February, 1Q4Q. Changes were going on next door. Vic Weathers and Homer Cotton bought the News.. Times, zt public auction, from Sam Meyer and his associate, Luke Smith. Vic and Homer tri ed energetically but unsuccessfully to put out the Harbor Area's first dally newspaper. Ben Reddick bought the News-Times from them, and also Carl Yeneman's Shopping News. For a wh ile he published 2 separate newspapers, then combined them into the Newport Harbor News-Press. The Globe-Herald and the News-Press fought it out during the years that followed, paying not much attention to the Ensign. The fast growl ng Harbor Area attracted the attention of big time publishers. Late in 1%1 Ben Reddick sold his News-Press to the Ridders, of St. Paul, Pasadena and Long Beach. The Los Angeles Times bought the Globe-Herald, which then had become a daily and had been renamed the Pilot. Th e town wasn't big enough for both the Ridders and the Chand I ers, so the Los Angeles Times acQui red the News-Press, then eliminated it as a separate paper by com- bining it with the Daily Pilot. And so here we are -owners and publishers of the New- POrt Harbor Ensign, sole surviving newspaper printed and published in the Ci ty of NewPOrt Beach, and the only inde - pendent, homH:>wned newspaper in the Harbor Area. And our competition is the Los Angeles Times. We like it that way, and l guess they don't mind too much. All this is a lot of change among newspapers. But it does prove something: Even tn the midst of the giants of journa- lism, busily fighting among themselves, there is a place in our wonderfu l community fo r the hom~owned, local paper , devoted exclusively to the news and interests of our town. It proves al so that in these days of the leftward drift among the opinion-molders, there is a need for the conservative editorial voice, speaking up for individual liberty, private enterprl se, and devotion to God and Country. ********** THE RISK OF WAR Dallas (Texas) Wo,.•l•t News 0{ course free man must be prepared to risk war to protect their freedom.
