Your attention Is Invited to the "brickbat" letter in the
''Letters to the Editor" column on this page.
I agree thorough I y with a portion of the accusation in the
letter. 1 AM definitely narrow minded and one-sided in my
editorial ~Icy. The way to truth~ narrow; there are lnn~r
merable pathways to error. There is only one way to t.ruth,
and that is through Him, who is truth, the same yesterday,
today and forever. c\ny claim that 1 have to being right rests
on my faith and ability In followi ng His teachings.
There is another topic on wh ich 1 am narrow minded, and
that is in regard to antisSemitlsm. I am very one-sided In my
belief that anti-Semitism is un-American and un-Christian,
and that it must have no place in our political or social or
moral judgments.

'GOAL IS TO IE EXTREIE II EXCELLEICE'
Dr. Fred Schwarz, president of the Christian Anti-Com-
munism Crusade, has excellent comments on extremism in his
Aug. 5 newsletter.
After repeating Senator 8arry Goldwater's statement , "Ex-
tremism in the defense of liberty is no vice," Dr. Sch warz
wr ites: "The Ct)ristian AntisCommuni sm Crusade has often
been called an extremist organization. The term, extremist,
has usually been used as an insult, but in many ways it is
a compliment. The word, extreme, is morally neutral and
takes its moral value from the objective it qualifies. The
extreme sensitivity of a surgeon's fingers is good; the ex-
treme sensitivity of a safecracker's fingers is bad. We take
pride in being extremely devoted to the cause of freedom
and strive to be extremely effective In the battle against
communism. Our goal has been the extreme of excellence
and not the middle ground of me<1iocrity."

'AIT1-POV~Rn' IILL I, A CRUEL FRAUD
It is discouraging to note that both the Senate and the
Hoose have voted approval by a wide margin for President
Lyndon Johnson's so-called "anti-poverty" bill.
The most rational comment that can be made is that this
is an election year boondoggle, designed to win votes in
November. The worst thing that can be said is that our legis-
lators actually believe that the bill will help fight poverty.
If that is so, then we are in trouble indeed, because it means
that no lessons have been l earned from the colossal failures
of the past 30 year s of "anti-poverty" legislation of the
New Deal and Fair Deal and New Frontier administrations.
If "anti-poverty" laws would rea lly work , then we shou ld
all be rich beyond belief, as a resu l t of the hundreds of
'3JLLIONS of dollars that have been soent for th•s purPOse.
beginning w1th FQq's New Deal, and conttnuing to the pre-
sent day.
This type of legislation •s a cruel fraud, because it leads
peopl e to believe that the oroolem ts actually being solved.
Of course, there can be te mporary benefits for the favored
groups, but only at the expense of other groups. And in the
end, everyone loses, because the over-all standard of living
will be re<luced as tncentive for increased production is
undermined.
There 1s the key to the problem. Poverty can oe eliminated
only by Incre ased oroduction Government cannot add to the
wealth. It can only take money from one individual to give
to another thus carrytng out President Lyndon Johnson's
soc1alistic pledge· "We are go1 ng to try to take all of the
money that we think IS unnecessarily being spent and take
it from the 'haves' and give it to the 'have nots' that need
i t so much "
President Johnson IS politicking here on the fateful lure
of socialism: something for nothing, a hand-out instead of
hard work . Common sense says that it wi II not work. History
has given us many tragic examples of this failure . And our
own nation has given us astounding proof that free enter-
prise capitalism can increase the wealth of a nation to fan-
tastic heights, in com pari son to the stagnation of social ism.
Now the official policy of our administration is to turn It s
back on the formula that made our nation great, and to set
forth on the down-hill, dead-end road of socialism.
What can we do about it? The vote on that anti-poverty
bill can give you a clew. Senator Barry Goldwater voted
against IL Electing him president In November will be a
firm, long step toward restori ng the honored American prin-
ciples of freedom, pri vate enterprise and self reliance.
******* INDIVIDUAL liGHTS ,._..(C..._} ,u......,.
T o t.ay that we must give up individual rights for the
public good is wrong. The public ia IDade up of sinsle
individuals. each of whom bu as mattlJIIt;sbts as the other.
Why, then, should any of us be forced co so alons with
decisions which we consider to be an irurin~ment on our
private a/Fain? Becawe we are in the minority, doa that

"Well," J n:plird. ''the most charitable

I have yet to see or hear onr single net-
