There's "cautious optimism" among Ntwport 13tach city
officials about their chances for getting the adopted coastal
freeway route relocated.
That optimism cou ld be much more lively If Newport Beach
could enlist the cooperation of the City of Costa Mesa, and
thus offer a so lid united front, with support also from Hun-
tington 13each and Laguna 13each, up and down the coast.
That Costa Mesa cooperation is not forthcoming, however,
for the re location project being pushed by Newport '3each.
The Newport "relocation" would go only a few hundred
yards farther Inland than the adopted route and would seri-
ously conflict with development plans of Costa Mesans.
There is a plan that cou ld receive support from the Co sta
Mesa City Council, from the school boards of the Harbor
Area, from the local new spapers, from the Chambers of Com-
merce of Costa Mesa, Newport Beach and Corona del Mar,
service clubs and civic associations, and from 99~ of the
local citizens. This is the plan to swing the course of the
San Diego Coastal Freeway along Palisades Rd., around
the 13aclc 13ay, down below the campus of the University of
Cal ifornia at Irvine, and then back of the coastal hills down
toward Capistrano. This cou ld take the through-traffic pres~
sure off our coastline and eliminate those interchangt mon-
strosities that are planned for Superior Ave. and Coast Hwy.,
the Arch es, Dover Or. and Coast Hwy ., and Mac Arthur Blvd.
and Coast Hwy . in Corona del Mar.
There are strong arguments for removing the freeway Iocr
tion entirel y out of the heart of our Harbor Area -in addi-
tion to the considerable financial savings that could be
realized by not cutting a freeway swath through some of the
most expensive real estate in the world.
Removing the freeway from our doorsteps would be in har-
mony with State Park pol icy of not cutting off a community
from its beaches. It would also be in harmony with the com-
mon sense policy of not splitting our Harbor Area asunder
with the tons of concrete roadways and pillars.
Ttw. fruw~y ~rler could h~ve serious consequences to
the economic we ll be ing of the City of Newport Beach. Local
residents on the inland side of the coastal freeway would
be greatly inclined to head even farther inl and for their
shopping, rather than trying to cross that barrier. The Lido
Shopping Center, and the adjoining business area, could be
grievously hit, because that interchange spide rweb at the
Arches would dismay th e most courageous of shopping dri-
vers. '3alboa, Mariners Mile, '3a lboa Isl and and Corona del
Mar businesses would also suffer from th is change in shop-
ping habi ts.
State Highway Commission Chairman '3radford said at the
recent hearing in Sacramento: "We don't have the right to do
the wrong thing knowingly .. I don't think we would spend
the re st of our l iving days on this earth defending an action
just because we took it. .. "
The wrong thing is to const ruct the freeway monstrosity
and its horrendous interchanges in the heart of our city. It's
not too late to do the right thing .•• if all here unite solidly
behind the correct solution.
