11¥1 OIIIDIT 'IIIEIIE CIIEIIT IS DIE
There was a bit of a commotion at Monday's adjourned
meeting of the Newport 13each City Council because of a
newspaper advertisement that looked as if it might be city-
sponsored and city-financed.
The ad extended congratulations from Newport 9each to the
Irvine Co. on the occasion of the lOOth anniversary of the Ir-
vine Qanch. No city funds were involved, because the ad was
the project of Counci I man c\1 Forgl t, who Is a freQuent user
of full-page newspaper advertisements to inform the public
not only about his hardware store, but also about civic and
city achievements that deserve praise and suppa rt.
So when all the smoke had cleared away (and the Council
had agreed on official policy on use of the city's name and
and seal) these commendable facts were once again verified :
The Ci ty of Newport 13each does not spen d hard-earned money
of taxpayers for newspaper or magazine ads, which is as it
should be, because promotion and publicity are not the proper
functi'ons of government. c\nd secondly, the City of Newport
9each has a citi zen who is willing to out out his own cash
to give public recognition and commendation to his city when
such praise is merited. • • •
HE'LL HELP YOU "WAlE UP"
Critical topics in the day's news are Vietnam, extremism,
communism, racism, and communrst strategy against 9arry
Goldwater. Now you have an opportunity to hear all these
topics discussed by an outstanding expert -Or. Fred Sch-
warz, the Australian physician who heads the Christian Anti-
Communism Crusade. He'll be speaking Wedne sday evening,
Sept. 9, at the Corona del Mar High School. Go hear him, and
take along a friend who needs to be wakened up a bit to an
awareness of the communist conspiracy. Or. Schwar z can
certainly help with the waking up.

estimated population was
2,293,000 or 1"3~ 1ncrease.
