l "s-.TCH" MAY toLVE FREEWAY PI•T
Mayor Paul Gru be r made an important observation about
the Co astal Freeway route in his speech last week before
the Orange Coast Assn. He pointed out that the route adopt-
ed by the state th rough Newport Beach would create an
artificial barrier cu tting off out rec reational beach areas
from a substantial portion of our community and other inland
areas. He sugg es ted that th is situation would not help
ra ise much enthusiasm for the 1150 million recreation bond
proposition on the November ballot.
Howev er, Mayor Gruber should apply the same argu ment
against the so-called "inland" route whi ch is offi cially ert-
li:used by the Newport '3each City Council. Th is route is
"inland" only by several hund red yards; i t woul d stitl cut
through our ci ty , and would still be a bartier in front of th e
recreational areas.
In this connection, there comes a propos al from ~ay John-
son, !Jemocratic candidate fo r Stat e 1\ssembly. He says,
"Solve 2 freeway problems by transferr ing the priorities,
funds and planning of the controversial Coastal Freeway to
the Orange Freeway, wh ich is desperately ne eded to handle
ttle tremendous traffic."
There is merit in that suggestion, but even mo re meritor-
ious for solving our proolems would oe a switch ol priori ties
and funds to a wider San l)iego Coastal Freeway to take
away our hordes of through traffic. 1'\nd then l et us tackle
ou r own local traffic problem, wh ich is the way it shOuld be
done, because freeway funds are not Intended for local
n~d s. • • •
HE'D-lliUTRUII II OTHER PARTY
Senator Tom Ku chel should be drummed ou t of the Repub-
lican Party and urged to join the Democ rats, where he would
find himself harmoniously in the mainstream. This is not a
ne w thought with me; that medicare vote in the Senate last
wee k just wa s another painfu l remind er . Mr. Kuchel was one
of the 5 so-call ed Republicans who provided the thin margin
need ed by President Lyndon Johnson to out over his medl-
c.~re amen dment, 49 to 44. Now on I ~ the House can turn back
th is socialistic, welfare-state measure, which could oush
ou r debt-burdened federa l government all the way to bank-
ruptcy .
Our nation's financial structure is al ready in appal ling
dange r. Senator Kuchel is helping to add yet another burden,
and th is could be the final straw. Once medical aid to the
aged is made a matter of fede ral legislation, tied to the
social securi ty system, whO can stop i ts inevitable growth ?
Each election year would see an increase ill medi care bene-
fits ana coverage , just as is happening with soci al security
itsell.
Federal medicare is cruel deception on our aged, and on
al l taxpayers. The time of reckoning is inevi table, just as
it is for an indi vidual who keeps spending beyond his means.
When the disaster of national bank ruptcy strikes, what will
ou r citizens, including the elderly, th ink of this "victory "
for L yndon Johnson?
The time to prevent the disaster is no w -oy appealing to
the good s.ense of ou r Congressmen to re1ect the medi care
plan.
