LIIZWI AIUI T1 1'1110 CLIJ1 YEAR
As I loot .V.tad to th~ "happy New Year" at the turn
of the calendar, I can only say, conservatively, that we
have ~ rough tJme ahead.
President Lyndon Johnson is going to be pouring it on
with his yen for the Great Society and his enthu siasm for
his War on Poverty. (There are other wars going on that
deserve at least equal enthusiasm, but anti-communism
has 110ne of the urgency of anti-poverty in L BJ's book of
priorities.)
The doleful prospect for the New Year i s a tremendous
out-pouring of our hard-earned tax dollars i nto federal
boondoggl ing proj ects, causing more and more inflation,
and further shackling the only force that could rea lly win
the w~r against poverty -Private enterprise capitalism.
As to the other wars , th~ prospect is a repeat performance
of the tragic past -more "glorious victories" by way of
negotiation, accommodation and coali tion, re sul ting in
ln~vitab l e takeover of more countries by the co~m~unist
conspiracy.
As the si tuation goes from oad to worse, amidst the
trium phant victory pronouncements from the White House
and State Department, mo re and more of us wilt be dis-
;>laying the latest in bumper strips: "Don't blame me; I
voted for conservatism."
And if enough of our voters recognize the dri ft toward
disaster, we can still stop iL
