.\..nPULATION. If Tommy
r"'Kuchel. ·State Controller,
is co~t. Newport Beach
has a population of 30,000,
·as against Santa Ana's 40,-
000, thus placing the harbor
as the second city in size in
the county. While this area
gained 700 per cent. says
K u c he I, t he county seat
jumped 26 pet. and follow-
ing the line of reasoning of
this one-track-mind column-
ist, Newport Beach will be
the first city in size in an-
other five years, a prediction
the Crabber has been repeat-
ing for several yea.rs. Of
course I seriously question
the state's statistical bureau
and doubt that 'we have that
many people in these parts.
meaning, of course, perma-
nents. The survey may have
been taken in the summer
months when people swarm·
to the seashore and when
our estimates have been be-
tween 20.000 and 25,000 t()-
tal population.
A check with the Chamber
o( Commerce reveals that
the 1940 federal census gave
Newport Beach 4438 and an-
other U. S. census in 1945
reached the figure of 9,396.
Both surveys were made in
the winter months. Today's
estimate is between 12.000
and 13,000 by the Chamber.
which is more of a guess
than the figures of the Con-
troller, who takes the water.
gas and electric meters, the
gas tax and such other items
in his reckoning to arrive at
his grand total of 30,000. In
preceding years that report
has been fairly accurate and
perhaps we are growing
faster than we realize. Any-
how, it would not be amiss to suggest to the Controller
that the city's share of the
gas tax fund be paid on the
basis of 30,QPO!

Father's Day. Well, most
of us poor fish get a break
next Sunday on Father's
Day. while the stores get a
better deal yet in their sales
and their advertising appeal
to buy !'omething for Pa.
Noting the ads. am of t~e
opinion the current affa1r
sold more space than Moth-
er's Day. which may be due
to the fact that most of the
merchant!' are men and they
feel more kindly toward
themselves than otherwi~.
Which means that we get
certain liberties next Sun-
day. like being permitted to
track mud and sand in the
house, shut off the radio
when we want to or rate a
second piere of one's favor-
ite pie. Which has nothing
to do with the other 364
days.

Thank.CJ, Volnf'~·! The other
day a pleasan( iron-gray
haired man knocked at the
door and presepted the writ·
er witn a color photo of the
News-Times building, nicely
mounted and glassed. It's by
far the best photo yet and
Volney Hay says It was one
of a number of business
blocks in the area he has
been snapping, not because
~Volney. Jr., happens to
have a new camera shop, but
because It created interest in
the surprising number of
business houses t here are
here. Volney is getting ready
to erect a 2-story structure
near the Balboa Rendezvous
for use of the Masons. and
cited the apparent indiffer-
ence of local citizens in the
enterprise. That is more or
less true in that regard but
Jet someone become hard up
or in trouble and the com-
munity respon_ds amazingly.

Refreehlq. Wouldn't it be
amazing and pleasing if some
of our federal bureaus, now
facing ruts in their budgets,
would take them in stride
.and actual)y try to abide by
getting the remaining em-
ployes to go to work?

Repeal Federal Gas Tax
The California State Chamber of Commerce is
advocating the repeal of the 1'/:.~ cent federal gaso-
line tax which costs motorists in this state about $37
million annually. This huge sum, of course, is in addi-
tion to the $95 million or more they pay in state auto-
motive taxes.
The Chamber of Commerce point..~ out that this
federal levy imposed during the war as a "temporary
and emergeacy" measure. There is no. longer any
• jtMtification for it to be continued.
· At this particular time California is trying to brin~
its road system up to the present-day needs. AP. we
well know, this calls for extensive construction and
improvement. There is strong opposition, however. to
any further ·increase in gasoline taxes .,~ince many
motorists feel they are already paying plenty.
But if the federal gas tax were repeal~d , highway
users might approve a !.¢ate gas tax increase. by that
amount. In thts way there would be no added burden
on car and truck owners. And the $37 million annual-
ly would help substantially towarrl building more
roads, if those funds are really needed.
At any rate, California motorists ~hould either get
more direct benefit from the $37 million each year
by having it go into the Rtate hig-hway fund in:-;tea<l of
the federal treasury, or they should havP it for them-
eelves.
Commemorative Postage Stamps
In each of the next three years California will cele-
brate the eentenial of a historic event: in 1 ~48. \he
dieeoYery of I{Old; 1949, the Gold Rush; 1960, Cali-
fomla'a entry tnto the Union.
The state is seeking not only to have a United
8ta&e1 commemorative postage s t a m p created in
honor of the statehood centennial but a second one
' u well for the discovery of gold in California. .. ·
While statehood stamps are quite common, it if'
unusual for a state to ask for two special stamps with-
ill so short a period. The unique place in American
hist:O~ ·however, which the discovery of ~old holds,
-its tar-reaching effect on the development and
dntiny not only of the West but of the entire nation-
eertainly justifies a special stamp for its centennial
eelebration.
Alter all, itr was the discovery of this magic metal
in 1848 that resulted in what IS probably the most
adventurous and romantic chapter in the annals of
o\D' nation, that brought this rugged wilderness to
statehood, that helped turn the tide of victorv north-
ward in the Civil War by stren~hening and stabiliz-
ing the U.S. Treasury.
Yes, in our opinion, two commemorative stamP.s
are very much in order. No doubt, Uncle Sam w1JJ
agree.
How Safe Is "Safe"?
In Albany, California. not long ago a family re-
tW'ned home after an evening out to find that the
$4,000 they had saved over the years had been stolen
from the trunk in which it was kept.
Now, it isn't everybody that has $4,000 to keep
around the house for burglars to work on. But this
incident brings up the question as to why anyone
would keep that much a~ home either permanently or
temporarily. Undoubterlly, this family-thou~ht their
money was sa.fe in the trunk. But it waRn't. And it
