The photo on this page is an eloquent editorial all by
itsel f. If this doeStl't get your dander up, then nothing
will.
This monstrosity is the int erchange where the Newport
freeway would meet the proposed coastal freeway near
Hoag Hospital and the Arches overpass. See for you rselves
what an appalling swath of residential property these rib-
bons of concrete will cu t through. If you are familiar wi th
the Newport Heights area above the Arches, you wi II
know that the criss-crossing freeway lanes would takQ!r
away all of that portion of Cliff Or. that cu rves past the
endof SantaAnaAve. and would cut deep i nto the Heights
residences on La Jolla, Catal ina, Holmwood and West-
minster.
And thi s is Just one interchange in the coastal freeway
planning. There would be another at Superior Ave., and at
Dover Or. near the '3ay Shores entrance, and one at Mac-
Arthur '31vd. in Corona del Mar that would match the
monstrosity above the 4rches.
This does not have to happen. You can he I p save our
city and our \IIOnderful coastline. Add your name to the
honor roll of Freeway Fighters, and send in your dollars.

''10 THEil FAITH COifTH IY HfAMIS"
The Clellands announced last week that they will no
longer write their Probe column in the Ensign. They said
they did not wish to discuss the merits of various reli-
gions in thei r column.
I agree. The Gospel should not be a subject for argu-
ment, because fai th cometh by hearing, and hearing by the
\"'lrd of God. It is not man's argument that convinces, but
the \"'lrd i tself. I do wi sh to offer verses from the Scri ~
tures as commentary on topics that were men t ioned b¥ the·
Cl ellands in thei r final columns. <In conservative wri ting
we cal l tl'li s "docu-men tation.">
The Cl ellands ra ised a \"'lrd of doubt about faith being
the only way to sal vation and aSICed"What of the millions
who lived before the birth of Chri st?" They too were saved
by faith, as the Apostle Pau l explains in detail i n the
ll th chaoter of his ep1stle to the Hebrews. For by faith
came the message to Abel , Noah, Abraham , Issac, Joseph, .
Moses and 11avid, and many other Old Testament believers.
"These all di ed in fai th , not having recei ved the promises,
but having seen them afar otf," wrtes Pau l.
Job g1ves the dramatic testimony n the Old Testament,
in the words that are so famil1ar: " kno w that my re-
deemer liveth , and that he shall stand the l atter day
upon the earth :'The Old Testam ent IS the orom1 se of Hi s
comi ng. The New Testament i s the story of His free gift
of salvation to all that believe on His name.
The Cl ellands Quoted Matthew 7:21 <Y~d James 2:17
against the dOctrine of salvation by faith alone. James
speak s of work s as the vi sibl e eviden ce of fai th , so faith
has to come fi rst, an d then come the deeds o f righteous-
ness. As the Lord Himself ordained: "Let your li ght so
shine before men, that they may see your good worlc s."
The verse from Matthew is not a rejectton of the doctrine
of faith, but instead a warning against the false prophets
and hyprocrites who cry out, "L ord, Lord," but have not
true faith.
Read the many wonderful words of testimony to the
power of faith: "For by grace are ye saved through faith;
and that not of yoursel ves: i t is the gift of God: not of
\IIOrks, lest any man should boast." (Ephesi ans 2:8, 9.)
••• "Wh ere is boasting then? lt is excluded. 3y What law?
of work? Nay: but by the law of faith." (Romans 3:27)
••• "Not by work s of righteou sn ess which we have done,
but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing
of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost." (Titu s
3:5) ••• "They Whi ch have bel ieved in God might be care-
ful tD maintain good work s." CTi tus 3:8) ••• \'I do not
frustrate the gra ce of God: for if righteousness come ~
the law, then Chri st i s dead in vain." (Galatians 2:21)
••• "But that no man Is justified by the law in the sight
of God, it Is evident: for, the just shall live by faith."
(Galati ans 3:11 , QUoting from the Old Testament, Habak-
kuk 2:4) ••• "Therefore we conclude that a marr is justl-
tJfled by faith without the deeds of the law." (Romans
3:28.)
