FREEWAY F1GHTERS 0011 FOR TltE COUIIT
\ttention, Freeway Fighters: It you have any further
1pacity for righteous wrath, you may display it now!
'ihose Fighters who are especially concerned about kee~
19 the freeway out of Corona del Mar now have thei r worst
tears realized. The Newport !3each City Counci l, never en-
thused about Corona del Mar's concern, i s now, in ef1ect,
r.r1t1ng off this po rtion of the freeway fight. ~nd when there
1s .v~alcness in one segment of the battle line, the entire
bcittl e 1s lost.
\londay evening the Newport '3each Council adopted a
reso' Jt.on authorizing the staH to meet with Highway Divi-
s on anj Irvine officials to discuss local street alignments
Jnd tnterchanges that may result from construction of the
tree Nay ':ln the adoot ed rout e ~~TERLY OF JAM90REE
~0<\'). ""hat :neans the route through Corona del Mar, along
")ttl 6. ve.
Then, N•th a magnanimous show of stout heart, the Coun·
cil saed, "Th•s es not in any way to be construed as ac-
ceptance ot the ad()Pted route."
r;ood shON1 That •s about as heroic as it Gen. McAuliHe
had replied to the "Jazis' surrender demand at '3astogne:
"Nuts to you ••. However, si r, I am now making the neces-
sary arrangements for surrender if the go ing gets too tough.
No one is gotng to call me an extremist."
1 can just see the look of triumph on the faces of our state
High.vaymen as they hear of the capitulation of the once
sturdy, Fighting ':ouncil of ~ew po rt qeach. I am sure there
is no terror struck by those cream puti words that "this is
not to be cons trued as acceptance of the adopted route."
The Souncil members are thus letting it be known that
they didn't really care about the Corona del Mar portion of
tne freeway fight from the beginning. l recall th e sev eral
ettorts to obtain a definite commitment from the Council to
oppose the 5th -\ve. freeway route. The answer in every in·
stance Nasa marvel of double talk.
The ':ouncil IS reneg ing on its pledge to the communi ty to
light the coastal freeway route to the bitter end. The entire
freeway route through Newport 13each is involved in this
capitulation. Certainly our Council members are not naive
enough to imagine that they can surrender at one location
and triumph at another.
The only way to keep the free11ay monstrosity ou t of our
town is to stand fast on the pledge not to sign any agree-
ment with the state for the coastal route. This pledge was
made for Corona de I Mar as we II as for the rest of the city.
creeway ~='ight ers who sent in their donations in good
faith now have a right to ask the City of Newport 9 each
'i=ree Nay Fund for return of their money. • • •
