A TESTWOIIAl. FROII lARRY GOLDIATU
I had a pleasant chat wi th Barry Goldwater Tuesday
afternoon at the Balboa Bay Club, and I also had the
pri vilege of welcoming Peggy and their son Mike back
to Newport Beach , the ">econd home" for tht Gold-
waters.
Pol1tics, fo ret~ affairs and conservatism figured
promtnently in the conversation, of which much more
is repo rted on page 1, but I want to elaborate here on
a topic much dearer to my heart -the weekly news-
paper. With no prompting on my part, Mr. Goldwater ex-
pressed his apprect alton for the home town paper and
revealed hts understand1ng of the toil and tutmoil in-
volved 1n th1s JOb of the local publisher.
"The weeklie> are stronger and better read than the
dad tes," he sa1d. "The home town is loyal to tht local
paper. It IS usually run by a man who does the whole
JOb, and who writes hi s own stories and his own edi-
torials. How few publ shers there are in tht big dailies
Nho have a typewr~ter on thetr desk!"
He noted that th e weekl y paper "l i ves" longer than
the dally tt "hangs around the house longer," and Is
read ttem by ttem, because 1! is devoted to local news
and local problems.
Mr. Goldwater has good cause to appreciate the week-
ly newspapers, because he has somewhat rueful mem-
~" es of the treatment he recei ved from many of the big
datl1es, and from the radio and TV network s during the
1%4 pre si den tial campai gn. He has evidence in abun-
dance tn his flies, and 1t rray come out some day in a
book. I hope so, bec ause such a publication would bt
of eno rmous value 1n e•oos1ng the art o f news manipu-
