After Robert Welch, the founder and head of the John
Birch Society, spoke to a capacity audience at Santa Ana
Valley High School last week, he faced a flood of ques~
tions from the audience -both hostile and friendly. Here
'is a summary of the key questions, and the answers given
by Mt. Weich :
Q. Wouldn't it be good to set up an anti-com munist
government in Wa shington in stead of in Vietnam?
A. Yes. A group of people came to see me a while back
to ask where they could get money to set up a Cuban
govemment in exile to save their Island from communists.
I told them that if I knew where to get this kind o f money
(which I don't), I woul dn 't tell them because It wouldn't
do them any good. The only help for Cuba is to save it in
Washington.

Q. The question of the young age group is the draft.
Many o f us would be glad to volunteer, but don't fee l we
shvuld fight. What should we do?
A. I have no advice .to give on the draft. It is the cus-
tom of American men to toll ow the flag and go where they
are told. It is the American policy, tradition and patriotism
to support the flag.
Q. We agree that America is compl etely su rrounded by
commun ists. Why don't they assassinate you s ince they
did assissi nate P resident Kennedy?
A. Maybe they haven't thought of it; don 't tell them. As
long as the society is growing, they won 't try; mart~dom
is too much of a nuisance. If we start to crumble, J may
be in trouble.
Q. You seem to blame everyth ing on the communi sts.
You're in filtrating the police department, the PTA's, and
so on. Hitler got control by blaming everything on the
Jews. Are you a communist?
A. You can think wh at you want, if you have1 .:inyth ing
to think with.
Q. You s aid, I believe, that Dwigh t Eisenhower wa s a
communist agent
A. Have you read my book "The Politi clan"?
Q. Now you a re saying that Hen ry Cabot Lodge practi-
cally oa•e ~~9'-.'ll~erja. 10 1111 <<¥lllll<lolsts. , _, .. • A. Yes;''r~1t-ih~M&rf!"'\\f'i ~-~ • .J v , _.; .._ ,;-,
Q. Do you believe that the assassination of President
Kennedy waS a communist p1ot'?' -ilf
A. Yes.
Q. You said we are fighting communists in Vietnam be-
cause we are at o ur greatest disadvantage there. Do you
mean th e admi nistration is helping the communists?
A. Yes.
Q. After th e assassinatio n o f President Kennedy, th e
pres s attacked us for denouncing the Warren report, but
no w the liberal s a re doing it Why ?
. A. I th ink it is due to the bitter in-fighting in Demo-
crat Party circles.
Q. I was a recent congressional candidate. I'm not a
John Bi rch mem ber. Where would you start in Congres s
if you were el ec ted?
A.. Stand on American principles; don't compromise
these pri ncipl es.
Q. Isn't it a fact that South Vietnam a sked the U.S. for
help and Cuba didn't? And isn't it true that we have pour·
ed mi ll ions and mi llions of dollars in Vietnam that we
c.an't get out? (The ques tioner inferred that we were slay·
ing there to protect U.S. investments.)
A.. We refused Cuba help; we didn't even ship Batista
the arms he bought I don't know what Vietnamese govern-
ment asked us for help. The mon ey we've put into Viet-
nam do esn't com pare to the daily cost of waging war.
Q. we have heard that the communists have a timetable
fo r th e capture of the world. Where can th is be found?
A. You can get th e general idea of 1976 timetabl e if
you read widely. Write to the John Birch Soci ety Research
department if you would like references.
Q. Pleas e comm en t on the Red Guard and reports of
trouble in Red China.
A. l have just com e from Hong Kong. It does look like
there is considerable ten sion and split, but it is hard to
kn ow what to believe in the commun ist press. The Red
Guard is part of the over-population problem o f young
men.
Q. You've implied that ou r government is doing every-
thing to escalate the war. Why would they do that?
A. War gives government mo re control.
Q. If we were to have a s udden reversal and a John
Birch member was elected president, would we have frEe
s peech ?
A. The John Bi rch Soci ety is fighting for the American
Republic, wh ich includes free speech and allows indivi·
dual freedom. There would be more free spet:ch. We would
expect free speech, not riots with a JeS member In office.
Q. Why is publi c .gplnion so strong against the John
Birch Society?
A. Communi sts have tried for yea:s to control America"~
public opinion. They are naturally against us for trylnQ
to ~se them.
Q. What are the possibilities ~W~d probabiiJties of a go..
vemment practicing treason and under communist Influ-
ence br.nding patriots as treasonous and sllenclnt them ?
