I took t[rr.e out during the week~end fo r a tup to San
Francisco tor the c ali forn ia newspaper publishers con-
vention, and the entire family came along to enjoy the
ride and the si ghtseeing. Karin and Bonnie {q and 7) en-
joyed the plane trip, the food and shopping in Chinatown,
Mid the overnight hotel stay, mostly because of TV in
their room, and the bell boy service, which could magic-
ally produce an e)(cellent breakfast.
The non-stop flight from the Orange County Ai rport, on
Air California, certainly is a convenience. The retum
flight,_during the early evening, is particularly spectacu-
lar, with the countless tights 15,000 feet below giving
the appearance of magi eland.
The publishers enjoyed the best in speakers during
Friday meal times: Governo r Ronald Reagan telling of the
grim fiscal situat ion and warni ng of the necessity for ad-
ditional taxes; Bi l ly Graham offering some th in g new i n
the way of publishers' prog rams -a call tor spiritual
awakening and a plea that the pu blishers shou ld set an
example for their readers.
Gov. Reagan always gets extensi~t·e pre ss coverage tor
hi s pronouncements, so let me devote this space to BillY
Graham's message.
His remarks concerned the young generation, those under
25, wh o already make up mo re than halt of the population.
He described the modem youth as revolu tionari es; inde-
pendent, lack ing moral absolutes, yet seek ing moral gu i-
dance; ideali s tic, with a passion tor reform and looking
for a cause; disturbed by a sense of empt\Jle ss and lone-
liness.
"t'an was made for God," he said. "We are bu ilding
slr~ bodi•s.and-Hw,ating the mind, but we are ignoring
the ·soUI. God ls being taken ou t of schools, and we are
·reap ing the wh irl wind. The youth are afraid o f being alone
and they have a sense of guilt, be cau se they have no t
God.
"That is what th e Gospel is all about: forgiveness. Stu-
dents are asking how can they be SlJre that the Supreme
Being has forg iven them. That is why Chri st died on th e
cross. He took: ou r sufferi ng and ou r guill
"Fear of death is pre sent at all times. But there is an
an swer to death, for life here is only a pr eparation for the
I i fe to come.
"We need a sp iritual renaissance to bri ng back moral
fiber. You publishe rs have a great responsitility. You
have a tremendous instrument in your hands. Take seriouS-
ly the moral and spi ritual responsibili ty that this country
must have to su rvi ve. Start no w by making you r dedi ca-
tion to God.
"You have the responsibility to set an example. The
eyes of the world are upon California. t hope that th is
state will set an example that the rest of the world will
follow.
"God bless you every on e."

In my younger dayt people thought that
the world would get better and better by a

That's a switch.
Just about everything else has gone up.
But not the price of Edison electricity.
A kilowatt-hour has gone down in price 34%
since 1939. •
Then how CO!JtO your electric bill isn't lower today?
Answer: you're using a Jot more elecbicity today.
Tbe typical home uses electricity ~ different ways.
Of coune, being investor-owned (we have approx-
imately 145,000 stockholders, many of whom are
customers) gives Edison an added incentive.
We have to do our )eye) beot to keep electricity
abundant and low in coot.
