Newport Heigh ts and Cli ff Haven resi dents have cau se
to gri pe about the on-aga in, off-agair, fr ee way si tuation.
They righ tly fe el that th ei r area is a "mere pawn in the
fr eeway chess game between Newport Beach and Costa
Mesa.'' The proposed re-routing along 15th St. has been
called the comp rom ise inland corri dor, but it looks ~I
it is the Heights area that is being comp romised.
The distressing freeway story is moving towar d its un-
happy cl imax, precisely accord ing to the wishes of the
state hi ghway men, whose minds were made up long ti me
ago . They have been willing to bide their time, allowing
the varied interests in the local communi ty to begin fight-
ing among themselves, exactly as is now happening. Then
in thei r own good time, these highwaymen will move in
with thei r freeway, ri ght th rough ou r town, as planned in
the beginning. The cries of anguish that will th en arise
will come much too late.

TAKE HEED OF THE TAX REBELLION
1 hope th at public official s who are seeking to spend
mo re tax moneys are beginning to pay se rious heed to the
very apparen t tax rebellion that is at hand. The rebell ion
has been given dramatic con firmation by the rej.cction of
school bond issues, tax over-ri des, and most recently, the
coun ty flood cont rol bond issue.
In the long run, all projects that need to get done will
get done -and undoub te dl y at much less cost than th e
original es tima t e. The taxpaye~s' growing re sistance wilt
help pa re down the projects and the costs, and even tually
should turn back the spiraling tax bite.
Many of the spending proposals can be traced to the ef-
fe ctive pleading of well organized and art iculate special
iQterest groups. Th'e mon ey -sav ing public has no such
r!presentation belcne oUr cfty counc11s and county-sl.ll)e'f·
viso rs and sta t e legislators. But the public does have
one effective way to say "no," and tha t is at the ballot
bo)(. It is well to remembe r that most of ou r troubles com e
from saying "yes."

GOD
IS

The divine Prin ci ple -the ba sic cause wh ich
1S God-is as vital and active on man's behalf
now as when Christ Jesus healed in Galilee.
Don 't just accept this on faith ... you can
prove it for yourself. You can prove that an
understanding of God can transform a
person 's life, his character, his health.
Ralph W. Cessna, C.S.B., a member of The
Christian Science Board of Lectureship, will
speak on this subject in a lectur~ called
"Is There a God?" He will discuss the point
of view of both those who sincerely feel there
is no God and those who be lieve that God can
be absent or unavailable in time of need.
Mr. Cessna will answer these concepts with
e .. mples of individuals who, throuch a new
awareness of what God··really is, have ellml·
noted deep character faults, overcome illnesses
called incurable, and unhappy situations.
Admissiollls free, everyone is welcome.

anothcr rt'l·orded appearance after His resurrt•t·tion and the
third tirnc He appcW'cd to the disciples. The angds had told
the womt'n that He would mct'l the di.s<:iples in Galilee. Matt.
2.lf:7.IO; ~111:. 16:7. Before His crucifixion lie had assured HiJ
disciples that after H e wns raised from the dead He would go
heforc them into Galil<>f'.
II is well to note that it is wriltt'n in Jn. 21 :14 that this
appearance on the shores of Galilee wws the third time that
Jesus showed Himself to the disciples. The first time was ia
the upper room at Jerusalem. The second time was in the
same room one week later.
Jn Matt. 28:16, it is stwtt'd, "Then the t'le,•en diseiplc.-!i went
away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed
them." Since it is declared in John 21: l.f that His appearance
on the short'~~> ol Galilee, when only seven were present, was the
third time that Hc.-showed Himself to His disciples alter lie was
risen from the dead, we mu.st conclude that Hi.s appearance to
them on a mountain in Galilee was the fourth time. Hc.-re it
appears, that rrt05t of the disciples were fully convinced that He
was a risen Christ and a living Cod; th...refore they worshipped
Him.
E, idently the ne1tl recorded appearance of Christ after
His resurrection is found i.n 1 Cor. 15:6, where the at)()§tle
Paul, writin& by divine inspiration, declares: Jllen He apo
peared to about five hundred brethren al Ont'f', of whom the
p-eater part remain until now, but some are fallen asleep.•
No details are given regarding thi.s appearance of Christ to
so large • company, but it must have been about three or
four weeb after His resurr~lion.
On the day of Pentecost, or shortly before, there were one
hundred and twenty disciples pthered in an uppn room at
