UEP TilE PIIOJECT LOCAL MD VOLU.TAIIY The South Coast Child Guidance Clinic announ ces in Its April newsletter that "the Board ~f Directors Is pre- sently considering applying for ShorH)Oyle funds which are provided by the Community Men tal Health Services AcL" This statement of intent is contrary to the promise given by the founding members of the Clinic wh en it was being organized almo st 7 years ago. There was considerabl e concern then among local citizens becau se of report s that a reQuest fo r Short-Doy le funds would be made. There was understandable opposition to federal encroachment In to the field of mental health, and there is eiJen more conce rn now, becau se fed eral pow er is increasing at an alarmi ng rate, and is reac hing into mo re and mo re areas of our lives. The founders of the Clin ic wisely announced their po~ li cy to be against reques ting Short~Ooyle funds. I wa s present at that meeti ng, and I was gratified to hear that s tatement. In th e ensuing years, th e Clinic has carr ied on with increasing success, depending on voluntary sup~ port, local contributions and fund-raising pro jec ts. The Clinic has re ceived generous support throughout the community. Its activities have been widely publici zed, and the re sulting response has helped the Clinic to pro~ vide a growing prog ram of psychiatric services to emcr tionally disturbed children and their parents. A hard- working staff of wo rkers and community~wi de support from in terested ci tizens have made this growth possible. The Clinic newsl etter comments that "there has been a 9reat deal of resistance to the Sho rt~Doyle funds be~ cause people in the community feel that the government will attach s tr ings and try to tell the Cli nic wh at to do." The newsletter seeks to disPOse of this resistance by s tating that "this iSll 't so ..• Th ere would be no strings attached." The record of disbu rsement of taxpayers' funds by any governmental agency reveals, on the con trary, that the give r of th e funds specifies how the funds are to be used. Federal cou rts have held th at where public funds are allocated, the fede ral gove rnment has the power to s ay ho w the funds must be spent. Thi s criticism is being translated into acticn in a no vote on school bonds and tax in· creases. The "spe, ial Vietnam issue" of the UCI campus news· pape r, Anthill, offers an example of aggravation that riles American patriots, and most especially those of us who have served in the Armed forces in previous wars and have fought to preserve fr eedom , including the freedom now being enjoyed by the aggravators. Bun ster Creely, a concerned ci tizen and taxpay et, wh o writes from time to time tor the Ensign, offers his opin· i.on on the Anthill's special issue. He writes with con· si derable res traint, wh ich belies his pugilistic back· ground. ••• By Bunst•r Cr••ly COLLISION COURSE The Newport Beach<os ta Mes a School Board is on a collision course with dis· aster be cause of the recent ddeat of the bond issues , and this in fa ce of a popu ~ )ati on growth which is no mere projecti on, but ;;. dis~ cernible , obvious increase in the number of people movina in to our commun ity. Orange Coas t College faces the same fate of poverty in that its plea for more funds from bonds was soundly denied by vo ters of this community. It may seem passina s uange that the people of a community, once generous in outlay of funds for their schools, should suddenly re verse l.he position of !.heir earlier free~anded offerina and put lheir clenched fist behind their collective back to witho \d any additional fund• to these various tcboola. Three men appeared to Abraham and when he saw them , he run out to meet th em, greeted them , and offered them hospitality. lie offered the men food and rest and entertai nment. Ah er dinner, the men spoke to Abraham about his wi fe and said that in the •pring Saruh ,C¥ou ld have a son. Sarah and Abraham were both too old to have childr~:n. Surah overheurd and laughed . The angel reprimanded her for laughing and renewed his promise . \her their visit wi th Abmham, the ungels slarted on the ir way to Sod.om and Gomorrah. The llible says that God hud heard about the wickedness of these tw o cities. It is important to notice that God did not a ct on hearsay. but He sttid, "I will go down to see whether they have done altogether according to the outcry whi c h has come to me". God wanted to see for llimself be fore he took oct ion. Ce rtainly, this should caution all people not tn act on hearsay. The scene in which ·\braham bargains with God is one nf the most famous in the nib I e. It is an instance of which is called intercession; that is. of pleading wi th God in somebody e lse's be ha lf. Abraham simply pleade,J for God to spare Sodom Bod GomotTah not because they deserved to be spared bu t !J'imply becaue Abraham asked it. l .ot, who was \bruham's nephew, was evide ntl y a man of considerable importance in the city. That he was sitting a t the gate means he was ac'ting as judge. To "sit at the gate" was to sit in jud~ement. This space was re served for only chief men of the city. Lot offered hospitality to the angels of God thinking they were men, but the hood lums of the city, both young and old, wanted tn commit an outrage. The wickedness of Sodom is be lieved to have been a widespread cus tom of unna tural practices and the y gave a horrifying demonstrati on of their lust to the angels. Lot tried to protect them and even offered to sac r i (ice his daugh ters but to no avail. The angels had to use supernatural powers to defend both Lot and his famil y. The y struck the men blind and in the momin ~ the angels told Lot to flee from th e city with his wi fe ,1nd hi:. 1iaugh ters. When they hesitated. the angel.s seized them by the hand :and hrou ~ht them out.;;ide the c it v. Thev were told to flee for their lives ~tnd not to look back. Out Lot's wife looked back and she became a pillar of nit. The destruct ion that took place is not recorded in known records elsewhere; but fr om the Bible, it seema clear, it was a tetTible thing that was not forgotten for many, many centuries. The des tru c t ion of Sodom and Gom~rrah -:vas .pro-rb\a.l amoo~ the people. 'It it~ typical o( the manner ia wbich God ju.dgea the wie\r.ednesa of this wo rld. During the exc:svation!l of P ompeii, destroyed by Veau.vi u.s' eruption in 79 A.D., it was found that som~one, likely a C hr istian, had scratched on a stone wall "Sodom11 Gome rr a ", be fore or during the eruption. Peter, in his second Epistle wri tes, "But the da y of the Lord wil l come us a thief in the Dight; in whi ch the heavens shall pan away with a wea l noise aod the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the eart h . shH II be burned up . She bought a new VW from Chick Iverson because she needed a car she could llurry around town in. She uses her car to deliver and pick up the kids from school, shopping, and dozens of quick trips around town every day. Within a few months she realized she was spending fa~r less on the VW than on her previous car ... a savings of cold cash every single month of about $83.50 over a 5 year period. This was pointed out to her by Chick Iverson at the time she was considering the purchase of a new car. Chick Iverson showed her that by buyin& a Volk swagen she would save eYery month on aasoline, tires, interest on her payments, purchase price, license plates, depreciation, repairs and on and on and on. If you want to enjoy instant economy every month, call Chick Iverson on the Peninsula and pi tho full story. It's not 10 ridiculous when you can sa¥e money like tut """'>' month. This kind of savlncs applies to students, retired people, business men, docton, etc.-no experi- ence needed to qu.llfy tor instent economy.
