If our nation still has the will to survi¥e, It must
hear and heed the words of caut ion and warning spoken
by concerned conseryatives.
One of the out s tanding spokesmen fo r the conservative
cause is ou r Orange County Senator John Schmitz, whose
report fr om Sacramento is a welcome feature on thi s
page. His main theme can be summarized in the words,
"Less government, mo re individual responsibility." If
that seems to have a marked similarity to the John
13irch Society s logan, and if Senator Schmitz is always
to be assailed by t he oppos it ion press as a member of
the J ohn 13i rch Society-then all the mo re honor to that
anti-commu nist organi zation of dedicated pat riots.
The only alternative to that slogan is "More govern-
ment, and less individual responsibility." o\nd our na·
tion is now traveling down that road toward disaster,
propelled by those who constantiy attack the conserv a-
tive caus e.
The situation fac ing us is point ed ou t in this week's
Sa'cramento re port from Senator Schmitz. Read it, and
heed it: • • • By SE NATOR JOHN G. SCHMITZ
Four years ago next mon th I mode my decision to bccom"e
a condidole for the Cal ifornia Senote. Though many of my
fri ends and co·workcrs omong Orange Coun ty conserve·
rives urged me to take this step, the final decision hod to
be mine alone, I chose to seek the office I now hold be-
cause of o deep conviction that our s tate and our notion
hod to take on entirely new course if our freedom as indi-
viduals was to endure, and that I could help br in g about
the necessary change,
Now, w1th 3 sessions of the Ca lifornia Legislature be-
hind me and o 4th about to begin, the urge ncy of this new
course has be come all the greater -and still we hove not
token i t.
As a people we must rcoli:r.e that nothing ;iven to us by
other men is "free.'' Every bcnefit,..rece ived that is not
paid for in money or goods is pa id for in freedom lost.
The greatest threot to freedom is the power of govern-
men!, now as throughout history. The co lossus thot is
government in America today is slowl y fus ing together
i_nto on unbreakable moss of row power, Federal, stole,
and lo cal bu reaucracies ore becoming interlocked, Each
assists the others and bo nds together against any onempt
by the elecTed representati ves of the people to see that
lax money is spcnl a ccording to the will of those who
earned 11, The frightening apathy obout the growth of
government is selfl ing over our people, Too many ho ve
assumed, or ore beginning to assume th at it is inevitable,
That every year we must spend more and tax mo re.
The appetiTe of those who hold other people's money ~~
obviously unli mited. The capacity of the producers is not.
Ever-growing government le ads to sla very -and sl aves
ore the poorest of all producers. An Amer ica without free-
dom is on Ame rica certa in to be total ly and permanently
destroyed. We have gone for down th e rood toward govern-
ment with unl imited powers and on unl imited cla im vpon
the earnings of every product ive citizen. The cho ice be-
fore u s is nol the rote at wh ich th is mon strous machine
wi 11 extend it se lf . We con no longer reasonably draw hope
from small decrease s in the expansion rote. To change
ou r course we must actually cut the s ize and cost of go-
vernment -and 1968 is th e year this could be done in
Cal iforni a,
We no lon ger hove any deficit lefr over from the previous
administration. There has been ample opportunity to study
al l major problems that might arise out of really signifi·
cant cost reduction, Cal iforn ia cou ld still toke the lead
and prove too doubting Amer ica that this "modern oge'~
about Wl"'i ch we hear so much is not one that will end
Ine vi tably in slavery. We cou ld storl 'o new trend toward
less government and more freedom,
I ask oil those who would like to sec th is happen _ whe·
ther or not they still think it possible -to jo in with me

Many of us stood watcbina with tears in our
eyes as so~ paranoid .patriots who wore black
arm bands were ordered to take them off or
go to jail. Just think bow much "proarus"
we've made since then! Press, networks and
government have softened up the American
people by implanring the lie that the ~;riminal
Communisrs in Russja~aru.l AMerica are "mC'I·
lowina."
Kosygin required no such "security," as did
Khrushchev. He was wildl y cheered. royally
entertained and enthusiastically eodorsed both
here and on his next stop, Havana.
Our Commerce Departm~t . awhile back,
issued an export license to allow shipmen t of
$860,000 of American butter to the East Ger·
man Communisb. American exporters sold
:::!.204,000 pounds of butter at' 49 cents a
pound. The American people subsidized that
buuer to the tune of 24.5 cents a pound. Or,
in this one instance, American taxpayers were
robbed of $504,121" to give butter to the Com-
munist enemy, wh ile they th emselves were eat-
ing margarine. But. of course, o ur Communist
fr iends don"t live by butter alone, we also give
them mill ions of toos of soybeans for margar·
ine-und wheat for bread and rocket fuels.
Our European "'allies"' ask I and why shouldn't
they?): "'How can you criticize us for helping
Cuha when you"ve helped Russia more than
any ot her nation has?""
In this election year, politicians in Soc:ialist
P:m y A anti Socialist Party 8 will spend more
than ever before trying to out-bid each other,
using the liberties of the people as a medium
of exchange. Either the people -...ill rebel soon
and throw the rascals in both parties out, or
we will some day soon pass the point of no
return.
Government arg1cultural Wflflr.:ers will con·

tinue to uncomplainlnaly pay 40 cents for a
h9ttle ·of beer which once sold for a dime.
Government aaeflcicsl will contioue to mush·
room both in 1ize and in numbc:r. The only
goverriment aaency which will shrink is the
Office "for Civil War Pensions.
Allhough President Johnson has rea~y al·
ready gotten his tax increase, through the in·
creased Social Security taxes, he Will probably
get more rax increases this year, "to h~ad off
inflation." This is lik~ a drunk drinking him·
self sober. The President claims he has to get
runhcr tax increases to m«t the "CSK'ntial
needs'" of government.· One of the ·•essential"
projects last yea r was the Depa rtment of
Health, Education and Welfare's $159,000
grant to the Univ. of Florida for the noble ob-
jective of teachi ng mothers how to play with
!heir babies. There will be even more babies
and more government larcenies in 1968 and
many people won't mind as long as they them-
selves ge t in on the steal.

"I took the 1 i ttle book.
and ate it up; and it was in
my mouth swee t a s honey:
and a s soon as I had eaten
it, my belly was bi tter."
(Revelation 10: to).
It ma y have been that St.
Jo hn, the Di \l'ine, au thor of
the Revelation, had some
o ther book in mind when he
wrote this \'crsc, bu t never·
the less i t is apropos today
if we include in "the little
book" the entire ranac of
communistic li terature from
the Manifesto to the latest
pronouncements.
The whole communi sti c
poruayal has been sweeten·
cd by artifi cial swee tening
to make it tas te good. How
man r millions have been
led as'tray by the pleasing
word s: "To each aceording

many have been indu ced to
belie\'C that communi sm is

and the ideas are digest ed,
~ey are bitterl y disappoint·

Fo r example: The in fonn;r
tion emanates from Russia

arc fre e to worship as they

have proof that young people
are discnu raged hom JOin--
in g a chu rch, because if
they do, they wi ll not be
permi tted to con tinue with
thei r education and wi ll be
doomed to spend their lives
as members of the labor

Rev. Richard Wunnbrand
disclosed in last week's
Conservative Corner that

a t remendous background.

The fir st round in the figh t
