destroyed millions of lives -that incredible
power that can only be forced out of you by one
that is even greater? The second greatest force
in the world is fear. The one ahead of It Is fa ith.

employ faith? Merely st.:r1d up to your fears, face
to face, and so remark ably strong is faith that
even a little faith, if rt's real, can undercut
enormous fear. Do this, and one by one, •)'our

your fears have probably been with you fo r some
time, and they feel at home in your mind. You
must work at it, keeping your mind so full of
. faith that there is no room to r your old fears.
Want to get started rl ght now? Just sa:;, "Throu 41!

faith." Congrah.llations. You've just taken the

St. Thomas Bible Lesson
JO NAH IN TH E WHALE'S BELLY
Jonah 1 & 2
Le11on 16, Seriea II
Jonah's exper\eJlCe glv~ U!l on e o f the ·key passages of Scripture. There
is no question o f 118 primary meaning. Jesus himself gives U!!the Interpretation
in Matthew 12:40. It fon'Shadows. or prefigures. the death and resurrccliont
of Jesus Ch rist. "Fo r as Jonas was three days and th ree n ights in th e whale's
belly : so shall the Son of l\lan be three days and three nights in 1he heart of
the earth." The seeming difference in time between three days and nights and
the time from Friday evening to Sunday morning is due enlirely to a manner
o r speech.. The Jews would speak so to mean a pan of each of thn.•c days and
nights and not nooessa rU y 72 houn.
The likeness between th ese two events extt'nds. to the difficulty most people
have In believing them. If Chrisllans today ·do not understand what an up-
heaval is involved in accepllng the literal I ruth of the Resurrection or Jesus, il
is because they don't really think a bout iL \\'hen Jesus rose from the tomb.
II was his Oe15h that arose. The tomb was empty. While It Is lrue that that [Je"h

The Apostle Thomas was not the only om.· who balked ut believlnrhl thr
Resu rredion. So did ('Joopas and his friend nn the road to 1-:mmaus. And
when St. Paul addres!ied th e Athenian phUnsopht'r!! on :\I ars Hill. the.v listened
to him lntert-s tedly until he spoke of the rt.'1iu rrection. when they brokt• up lu a
tumult. It is just as hard to acrept today. Many people fool themselves about
·u by thinking or It as a kind of release of the 11oul from the body. That is not
the cat~e. It Is the resurrection of th e boc:f.v.
In view o r the difficulty in believing In th t> resurrcdlon, it is no surprise
that the prophetic evcnl prcngurlng it, Jonah in the whale. should alsn chaJ-
Iengc belief. Often it il-l U!lt-d to ~xamine candidates for the mlnislry to St.'t' If
they really .do belicvt• the Hibh.· Is God's word writlen: lhat Il ls true as written.
o r literally so. What i!l at s take with Jonah 111 not an isolated or incidental
miracle story, bul an account, unavoidably put forth as a faithful rt"Cord. or
what Is at the very heart or the Gospel.
It Is perfectly true that from Jonah's experience there are many lessons
to be learned. many truths to be drawn. They arc the 11ame..,lessons we learn
from the death and resurrection or Jesus. Hut these les~ons a re valid only If
th e th ings from whtch they are drawn reaJiy h a ppened. We learn the secret of
history from Jesus' cruclnxion and his rising again o nly because that is what
ha ppened to Jesus. 'lliings a re true to life only if they truly happen In life.
From Jonah's experimce. we Sl'l' the kind o f thing that God don to bring
each one of us into conviction and full obedience to his will. It sho...,,os us how
we can be burled with Christ in hi! death. and b e partakers o f his res urrection.
Jonah was not a bad man: In fact he was a propht!t. a preacher. God spoke
to him and lo ld him to preach to :\7ineveh. It was a hard assignment. ~lneveh
was the capital of the Assyrian empire. a spreading military machine threaten-
ing to engelr all m ankind "u nder its world government,. The cruelty and sav-
agery of Its soldiery was proverbial. and the rulers were ruthless. As a servant
or the Lord. J o nah breathed the clean fresh a ir of freedom and truth. and It
was Insufferab le fo r him to live under the great lie or human tyranny. It
s hocked him and violated Ms conscienc:e.to preach repentance lo this city and
give Its people a b id to return to the bord. So he tried to run away.
J o na h ned to J o ppa, the sea port that serves Jerusalem. and took ship
for Tanhlsh-that Is. for Spain and points west. possibly t\lftl beyond. The
1hip1 of Tarshlsh were great merchantmen, buUt to carry cargo to distant
Ianda. A stonn tha t threatened to sink s uch a vessel must have bem severe In
the extreme. The sailon were afraid. They threw cargo and gear overboard
to keep afloat, and atUI they were ln danpr.
They roused every one to praY. and finally cast lots to see who It •Yas that
had 10 arou~ the fury o f heaven to bring auch a violent sto nn. l"ne lot fell
on Jonah. and he confened hit , tin. StUI the men were loath to throw him
overboard, u he eountelled. It ll from th is affair thai we get the sayin1.
•So-and-to 11 a \Jonah,• meantna he 11 a penon under the wrath of God who
brlnp dltuter on hla company. At lut the saUors we~ driven In th t.i r terror
to throw Jonah into the sea: "and the tea ceased from her raatna."
Then ~an Jonah's hou.-. that dncribe the concUtton oftheaoul that lt

upon it. • The walen compuaed me about. even to the 10ul: the depth doted
me round about. the Weeds Y(t!'t wrapped about my head. I went down to th~
bottom of the mountain•; the earth with ber ban wu about me forever."
Finally came the moment of 1ubml11lon and awa.kenlna: '"When rfty toul
