Since we see Jonah's experience ln the whale's belly as typical o f the d eath
and Resurrection of J esus, we m ay also see Jonah's preaching at Nineveh as
fo reshado wing the consequences of the Resurrection. In both cases Jesus ia the
authority for s uch interpreta tion . Not only is the Son o f Man to be three days
and three nights in the hea rt of the earth as Jonah was inside the great fish,
but also His p reachi ng Is said to be greater than that o f Jonah who even
caused Nineveh to repent. (Matthew 12:39-41.) Those who heard J esus, how-
ever, did not repent: it was not untU after he rose from the dead and J esus
Christ was preached by the Apostles that "devout men out of every nation
under heavenw heard th e Word o f God and repented and were baptized. II had
been that way with Jonah: it was not until after he had been In the nah's belly

Jonah, in his resurrection o f the s pirit. d id not then enter into a life or rest
a nd ease in this wo rld; no. he was immediately called of God to underta ke a
te rrifying mission to preach to the great world capital city of Nineveh, the cily
where another prophet. Nahum. described as "the bloody city! it is full o f lies

rattling o f the wheels. and of the prancing horses. and of the jumping chariots

none end of their corpses; they stumble upon thei r corpses." J o nah was assign-
ed to conquer this g reat city wh ich no annies had been able to withstand for
cen turies. Even fa r away Egypt had recently failed, maKing Assyrian wo rld

We may well apply to Jonah the wo rds spoken to Martin Luther at the
Diet of Wo nns in the Sixteenth Century. Luther was standing before the as-

Wo rld. George o f Fronds berg, o ne of those princes, said," Little monk, tho u
hast a nght before thee which we, wh ose trade is war, never faced the like of."
In th e same way we who t..-e ri sen with Christ do not enter in this wo rld
into a lire o f Utopian secu rity a nd pleasure. Rather we cross over, as did the
ls r.teiites wh o followed Joshua (Jesus the son of Nun) across th e Jordan, to
an embattled state in whlch we face a fight that makes the military men tremble.
It is a nght, as St. Paul says. not against fl esh and blood, "but aga inst princi-

against spiritual wickcd nt.>ss in high places.~ ·
