CITIZEN RESPONSlliJLITY-NOT CITY'S
Attorney Carl Kegley, a past president
of the Corona del Mar Chamber, raised a
pertinent point at Tuesday's meeting of the
Chamber directors: a protest against the
new City Council policy of using the water
bill mailing for sending out what he des-
crtbed as ''propaganda" to local residents.
He was referring specifically to the in-
formation sheet on the one-way street
proposal for Corona del Mar, which Is
being enclosed In the current water bill
mailing, and he recalled also the report
mailed out during the argument over the
proposed policing by television.
City government has no business getting
into this propaganda effort--and make no
mistake about It, all Information Is propa-
ganda, and no city official Is ahle to be
impartial about city business. Their
counter-argument is that only about half
of the residents read the local newspapers.
That Is not a valid reason for getting the
city into the business of trying to keep the
cltiaen~WP~· T~.;e!IJlO'III~IJUity

of citizens who do not care even to read
local papers?
Newport Beach Is fortunate in having an
independent, locally owned newspaper, the
Ensign, In addition to the news reporting by
the Los Angeles Times-owned Daily Pilot.
Unfortunate Indeed Is a community that Is
limited to just one newspaper, but there Is
a situation that would be even more de-
plorable, and that would be to have the city
itself assume the responsibility of sending
out the Information on city activities. • • •

FOUOW l'HE LEADER
It IOTMtimc:s seems 10 me that tbe wont
sin of our day is the sin of conformity. We
fall in line: too readily. What other people do,
we do. All too often those who claim to ~
Christians imitate: in their lives and babits
lhose who do aot claim to be Cbristiant. Many
a man violates his consc:ieocc rather than be
thouaht peculiar by refusing to do something
he knows is wrona. There is many a youna
woman who accepts a coclua.il bc:caUIC friends
around her drink them and because in the
set in which she moves it hu become: an ac-
~pted custom.
We need nonconformi•ts. "Be not conformed
to this world : but be: ye uansformed by the
renewing of your mind , that ye may prO\Ie
what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect,
will of God" (Romans 12:2) is a aood mouo
for Christian people in our day. They are not
suppostd to follow with blind devotion the:
popular pract.ice but be: directed by God's will.
That which is intrinsically wroa1 doea DOl
become riaht because: it becomes commonplace.
Sin is sin whether it is popular or not. The
a~at souls who have blessed the world have
not been those who went with the crowd. Tbc:y
have been those who went llg4i.Mt tbc: crowd.
Many of them were willina to die to ,be dif-
fc:re~t-They aavc: their lives for boldine to
an •deal or a truth counter to tbc: practices
and belit-fs of their day. Too many peopie
would rather die than be: different.
When God gave Moses instructions for His
choRo people, He ineludc:d this admonition:
1'hou shalt noc follow a multitude to do
evil" (Exodus 23 :2). The tendency of the
muhitude is away from God and aJo01 the
pathway of selfish gratiticalion. He who fol-
lows the multitude is apt to find himself more:
