WARNING OF "A FOOT IN THE DOOR"
The many words of congratulations for
the Ensign's award in nation-wide news-
paper competition are very greatly ap-

considerable support for defending the

and property rights.

The victory was an Important one, but a
word of caution is in order. This was Just
a skirmish in the never-ending battle to
defend property rights. Even as the
changes in the ordinance were being
accepted by the Council, there was a blnt
of further maneuvers in the future. The
adopted ordinance, although not as drastic
as originally drafted, Is a "foot In
the door." The entire body, carrying a
heavy club, can be brought In later. This
was acknowledged by the councilmanic
eomm•,nt: "We should crawl before we
beg in to walk; we are getting the founda-
tion built, and later we can work toward
solving the problem in some manner."

inr the child in her womb. "I will greatly multiply
thy seed that it shall not be numbered for the mul-
titude .... Behold thou art with child, and shalt
bear a son : and thou shalt call his name Ishmael,
because Jehovah hath heard thy affliction. And he
shall be as a wild ass among men; his hand shall
be against every man, and every man's hand
ag&inst him; and he shall dwell over against all
his brethren," (Gen. 16 :1(}-12).
These few verses contain three distinct proph-
ecies concerning Hagar and three concerning her
son. The angel promises that her seed would be
multiplied, she would bear a son, and his name
would be called Ishmael. Concerning the son, the
angel says he shall be as a wild ass, his hand against
all and theirs against him; and his dwelling place
was to be over against, or as in the margin, to the
East of his brethren. Two of the three prophecies
are fulfilled immediately as Hagar returns, bears
Abraham a son, who calls the child's name Is hmael
as the angel had said. The other promise, the mul·
tiplication of seed. will wait a few years as the
prophecies concerning the child himself and all four
will find their fulfillment in the ~wn Ishmael.
How happy t he eighty.six year old Abraham
must have been at the return of H&«ar from the
desert! As she told her story of the angel's visita-
tion, the first part of the prophecy, the multiplica-
tion of the seed, was familiar to the kindly father.
Just what he interpreted the other parts of the
prophecy to mean is difficult to determine. Perhaps
he ignored them as irrelevant or discounted their
accuracy. Or perhaps in the proud joy of a new
father, as he held in his anns the baby he expected
to be the son of promise, all other things seemed
insignificant. His life was complete; God had given
him an heir!
The sixteenth chapter of Genesis closes with
the words, "And Abram was fourscore and six
'yean old, when Hagar bare Ishmael to Abram ;"
the seventeenth chapter being, •• And when Abram

Aa to conditiODI in Abraham'• tamp durin&"
these years, one can only speculate. Geikie •uaesta
that Ishmael wao the darlillll of the camp. "The
only child of Abraham, who waa now ell"h!T-clx
yean of .aae. he crew up hi& father'a pride and
deli&"ht, and wao, douhtlesa. roprded u the futuro
sheik by an the membera of the encampment, and,
as such, flattered and caressed by old and youn •. ••
There was one dissatisfied peraon in the camp. how·
ever, for the "ftrst lady .. was still barren and couJd
not help but be jealous, knowillJ' that this young
prince of the camp was not her eon.
But the popularity of Ishmael and the serenity
of conditions as far as Abraham was eoneerned
are broken abruptly at the end of those years. God
again communes with the patriarch, aa recorded in
Genesis 17, speaking with him conceminr four dia-
tinct and yet related subjects. The covenant is re-
established, the sign of circumcision ia prescribed
and Sarah is named as the mother of the promised
child. The fourth subject is most relevant to this
study: the blessing of Jsh.mo.el. Abraham had cried
out for his son and God had heard and &!ready
blessed him. There are four parts to the blessing
and they are all concerned with the idea of off.
spring. Let us look at the verse and underline the
four parts: "And as for Ishmael, I have heard thee :
behold I have blessed him, and will maJu him f"'it-
/ul, and will multiply him ezceedingl11: twelve
princea shall he beget, and I will m.a.ke la.im a. great
fttltion" (Gen. 17 :20).
Calvin makea an interesting application of the
difference of the blessings to the two sons ... For
God liberally and profusely promises to Ishmael
whatever is desirable with respect to this earthly
life: and yet he accounts as nothing all the gifts
He confers on him, in comparison with the covenant
which was to be established in Isaac. It therefore
follows, that neither wealth nor power, nor any
other temporal gift, is promised to the soM of the
Spirit, but an eternal blessing which is possessed
only by hope, in this world."
Did God keep His promise concerning Ishmael?
The number of Arabi today is as the sand of U!.e
desert on which they live. A great nation they
surely are, and all coming from the twelve desert
princes of Ishmael recorrled in Genesis 25 :12·16.
Twelve nations headed by twelve princes mock by
their very existence the twelve tribes of Israel.

"Finally, brethren, farewell (the Greek word
for farewell is translated elsewhere a.• r~joiu),
Be perfect. be of good comfort, be of oM:
mind, live in peace; and the God of love aod
peace shall be with you" (II Corinthians IJ:
II). This is a good prescription for the new
year. Wha!C"ver el~ you have, if you are oot re-
joicing in the Lord. you arC" going to be mis-
erable; and you will be defe-ated this year.
. NehC"mia h tells w that "ThC' joy of the Lord
•s your strength" (Nehemiah 8: 10). Without
!hat JOY. you will be a weak Christian. If in the:
hour of tribulation you cannot rejoice, you
will not be a credit to the One Who hll3 told
you that in the world you can expect tribula-
tton . but to be of good cheer, for He has
overcome thC' world (John 16: J3 ). The psalm·
tst says. "But let the righteous be glad; let
them rC"joice before God: yea, let them ellceed·
tngly rejoice" (Psalm 68 :3). If. in !he mW:st
of God's blessing and opponunities. you can-
not keep a joyful heart and count your bless-
ings, there is something wrong with you.
''Be perfec:t"-that is, be perfected. Let tbe
Lord do for you this year what He wants to
do to bring you to the perfectton He has for
you . Let Him finish for you wbat He bas al-
ready started. Do not let some hindrance or
your own rebellion stand in tbe way of God's
perfect will. One: of the: great tbinp about
being a Christian is the assurance that He that
has begun a good work in you shall bring it
to perfec:tKm in the day of the Lord ( Phil.ip-
piam I :6).
"Be of good comfort." Keep an optimistic
outlook. Face the year with lbe confidence that
God is on the tbrooe and that this is His
world.

Thia great miracle of the virain birth wu the
result of the greater miracle of God ao loving
thia sinful, warring, wicked world that He
gave himself in the person of Chrlat for ita
redemption.
When the Lord Jesus wu bam in the fteeh.
it became pollollible for man to be bom of the
Spirit. That ia the reason Jeaua c:ould aay,
"Ye muat be born apin."1
A Marxist, .speaking in Hyde Park in Lon-

the man and shouted, "Chriat ean put a new

generated by the Spirit of God. That ia what
being bam again means.
The Bible also teat:hea that Chriat was

tell us the aame atory. Man failed in Eden

0 n August 4 of this year, a
power shortage plunged New York
into its most serious power crisis
since the massive blackout of 1965.
Lghts went dim. TV screens got
fuzzy . And people were asked to
cut back on their use of air condi·
tioning.
The problem: not enough gen·
eraeing plants. The reason: New
York utilities were not permitted to
build new facilities as planned.
Building schedules were postponed
because of delays in governmental
authorization.
Could a widespread blackout
happen here? Not likely now-but
it could happen in the future if we
don't build more generating plants
now, u well as substations and
transmission lines.
L make certain you 'will continiK
lo enjoy low-cost, uninterrupted
service, we must build some new
planb here in Southern Califomla-
clost< to wheu the power is lllt<d.
A MW Edieon plant can bacdit
your community in many waya,
including million• of tax dollars
e\lft}' year to aid your local achool
dillricta. In fact, Edilon • 1M Lqat
linJie taxpayer in many ol lhe com.
munities and counties where we
operate generating plants.
Does a power plant create smog?
According to Air Pollution Control
District authorities, Edison power
plants now account for less than r ;
of the total tonnage of air pollutants
in the Los Angeles Basin. In com.
parison, automobiles account for
nearly 9o:::.
Nobody wants smog, including
us. We've been pioneering ways 10
prevent pollution since 1954. You
can count on us-wherever Edison
builds a plant-to more than meet
the most stringent controls for clean
air established by local and state
authorities, plus the U.S. Depart·
ment of Health, Education and
Welfare. Because it involves you
and your environment. To us, that's
important. After all, 11,000 of us
work at Edison. Our families live
in Southern California, too.
B.ed on population projection~,
we need to build new gent<rating
plantl and, of course, lnnllrlillion
lina to brio& the power to you in
ceruinby-
Weahould build a plant-Vee·
torville in s... Bem.rdino County.--
We need another, with two units,
in Ventura County. Work is well
underway on the first unit at
Ormond Beach near Point Mugu.
And we need two new generating
units at our Huntington Beach
station in Orange County. Later ,
we'll need other plants within our
14·county service territory.
To meet current demand for
electricity, we're generating power
for Southern California by every
practical means-water, gas, oil, coal
and the atom. We're also importing
electricity from New Mexico and
the Pacific Northwest over extra-
high·voltage transmission liMs.
The best way to prevent a power
shortage il to avoid having all your
eggs in OM electrical basket. That's
why we n«d to build more gme.--
ing stations, substations and traM-
million lines throughout Southern
California.
Should it become necessary· to
build in your area, may we ClOWIIt on
your unclentanding and tupport?
You would be helping Southem
Ulifomia to remain lhe brltP.•
