ANSWERING A FEW QUESTIONS
The New Year's Day Log on resolutions

WE ALL HAVE A STAKE IN THIS
There can scarcely be greater variance
In political and philosophical thought than
Is found In the Newport Harbor Ensign and
the newspaper, "From out of Sherwood
Forest," and In the convictions of the
respective publishers. Yet I am moved
to speak out on behalf of Sherwood Forest
on the issue of freedom of the press,
and accordingly on the right to distribute
a newspaper.
A crowd or long haired young lads
objected strenuously Monday evening to the
Newport Beach City Council against what
they called repressive measures against
their newspaper. They charged that the city
was levying an unreasonable fee for
delivering the paper and thus was
Infringing on the right to publish and
distribute news.
I defend their right to publish In order
to preserve my own right to publish a
newspaper. Invoking the city's solicitation
fee ordinance against the distribution of a
newspaper Is a clear violation of the first
amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Free-
dom of the press Is meaningless If the
freedom to distribute newspaper Is
abridged.
Thomas Jefferson's words on this Im-
portant Issue are worthy of. frequent
repetition: "Our liberty depends on the
freedom of the press, and that cannot be
limited without being lost."

M y buddiea and I were outside a
theater near San Diego, look-
ing at the pictures of a cute
actre~M . I nudged one of my pals and
whiMpered confidently, "Some day
I'm going to Hollywood and date
that little doll." He just laughed.
One year afler that remark I w~
in "Giitterville" and had been cast
as third lead in a teen·type movie,
Dragstrip Riot. That same doll,
Yvonne, whom I had ~n in front of
the marquee earlier, was playing the
Jead. Our film wag a "ten.day won.
der." a quick ie with a budget smal-
le r than a Looney.tunes cartoon.
I played the "heavy" in the film.
There are two type~t of "heavie.IIJ,"
physical and pRycho. I waM the lat-
ter. Tt,e pic waM shot in Paradi~
Cove at Malibu Beach. I won't My

Yvonne and 1 R"Ot on well. She
wa...~ bubbly and pretty and all that.
but one thing disturbed me ; she was
juet too religious. I mean. she prayed
and talked about God ju15t as if he
were a clo~ friend of hers. My own
~piritual attitude at the time was a
Jitt:c embarra)tsing. I felt that if
there waR a God, that was fine -
likewise If there was no God. I Rim-
ply couldn't be bothered.
Near the-close of thie pictorial
die.aater Yvonne invited me to ueort
her to a church conference in the San
Bernardino Mountains. It eounJed
dull. but since I had eyes for her
I went along. What a surprise to see
one of my football heroes, Donn
Moomaw, heading up the conference
at Forest Home. Donn, I wu once
told, was probably the only All·
Ameriean in U.C.L.A. hi story who
never ate at the training table. They
merely tossed the meat on the ftoor
of hie cage! (Just a joke, Donn.)
Anyway we became friends, and
I had I!IOme interesting chats with
him and with another young athlete
I met that week, Rafer Johneon, the
1960 Olympic decathlon gold medal
winner. My mind was usually closed
a nd highly opinionated, because 1
was quite an arrogant young punk.
But I was jolted when Donn and
Rafer and several others asked me
the queMtion, "Do you think Jesus
Christ was a phony? That he was a
con man, or a clown?"
I had never heard such expres-
sions in relation to this man. I said,
"No, I've never thought that about
Christ." They answered, "Good, Bob,
because that mean11 you believe
Christ waR who he said he was, the
Son of Cod and our Savior." That
description rather overwhelmed me,
but I had no logical defense. I made
a silent decillion, for once, just to
ehut up and listen. Possibly -just
po88ibly-I might Jearn something.
I li11ten ed, they talked, and I
learned. They told me that Christ
made claims ~uC'h as "Before Abra-
ham was, I am .... He who has seen
me has seen the Father .... lam the
way, the truth and the life; no one
comes to the Father but by me."
Those were pretty strong state-
ments! Either they made up a fat
lie, or they were the ble88ed truth.
But somehow I couldn't conceive of
a "lie" givinK men hope, changing
gutter types into authentic human
beings, sending out mi11sionariee.
building Khools and hospitals, teach-
ing men and women to stop just
existing and start living.
A Bible waR slipped to me and I
WaR asked to read the third chapter
of John. A11 J trudged off to my

be realized that there is no real

lution, incluciina-the hypothetical
common ancestor from which man
tmd the apes originally diverged.
The study of population statis-
tics inrli('ates that the Biblical
chronology is mu ch more realistic
than the evolutionary chronology.
The human JY'pulation must have
started oriJr]nally from the fint
pair, Rnrl the qut>Rtion is whether
that pair was Noah and his wife
-t 3f)() yea~ ago (the time of the
worlciw ide Flood according to the
Us!ther chronology of the Bible)
or the fir.!lt "dawnman" and his
mate a million yean ago.
The p~ent rate of population
increase in the world is more than
2% per year. and the population
is now over three billion. How·
ever, the average rate would onJy
have to be %:% per year to pro.
duce the present world population
in 4:100 yean. To put it another
way, an average fRJ11ily size of
only 2 1/'l! children per family
would suffice to develop the p.....,

averaa-e life-span of only about
40 yean per penon. Thete ftrurea

On the other hand, thl• aame

of the <mtlre unfverwl Thlo fact
alone pro-that the auppoood
under my arm, but I was detennined
to &'et rid ot this epiritual hang-up
one way or another.
That ni&'ht I creaked open the
Bible and started reading. I didn't
know where thie St. Jim or St. John
could be found, but I started plow-
ing through the thin, tissue-like
page& anyway. Six or seven minutes
later it dawned on me that St. Wh()-
ever muet be in the New Testament!
I tinally found the third chapter
of St. John, as advertised, and com-
menced reading it. I whipped through
those 36 verses, and they didn't
make a bit of sense to me. 1 laid
down t he Bible and uttered what
was probably my first real person-
to.person prayer to God. The eu~ence
o( it was : "If you're real, and this
Christ is your Son, and is our Lord,
then, God, please make this next
reading cleu to me." I read the
chapter again, and it took on more
meaning, more depth, more love.
Why ? Because I wanted it to. that's
why. I was open and sensitive for
once, and God heard my prayer.
Then the 36th ver!M! jumped otT the
page and Kee med to say, "Bob Turn-
bull, if you ignore Christ, you've
had it ~"
It became clear to me that reli-
gion and Christianity are different.
Religion is man's attempt to reach
Cod, while Christianity is God 'e
way of reaching man. All m•jor
religions say you mu~~<t do some-
thing. Christianity says it is already
done : Christ did it all. We can't do
a thing except accept it.
It was foolish to ask myself if
there wa.." a need in my life. I knew
there was. I was sick and tired of
the phony and superficial existence
I knew in Hollywood. There had to
be more to life than standing in the
unemployment line for my weekly
check, yelling at my agent, hanging
around the ttfter-hours "niteries,"
or cr uising Sunset Strip. There had
to be more to life than that scene.
So I prayed my second prayer from
my very lonely heart:
"God, it's me again. I ~till don't
know all the happenings up here,
but I do know f need IJOmething in
my life. and if Christ is the answer

Even if, hy some mirncll.', the

therefore pa.,.sin g strange that it
i." so rlifficult to find human fos-

human remains ought t.o be ex·

Anri thi" 11hould be even more
true of the pre-human ape-men
that were supposedly evolving in·
to ·men during 60 or 70 million

latter that have ever been found
are a handful of doubtful bita and

otrer ua eternal life for real, and if
we can have forg:lveneaa for our ainr
then I accept him into m,y burt ana
life u Lord and Savior."
Si"! I said the word and didn't
crinp. "Sin" Ia a seldom-uaed word
today. People are embarrueed to
mention it. I wu. But whether the
word turna u1 on or off doean't mat-
ter; it does not alter the truth, what-.
ever we think. It my hang~ups and
negatives are called "ein" by our
Lord, then sin It ie.
Thia asking forgiveneu for sin
wu one way of saying, "Will the
old Bob Tum bull please 'dro~dead' !"
What haa my lite been smce that
eternal moment of decision? It baa
been a riot, to 8MY the least. I have
walked through the valley of the
shadow of death, but I have also had
some mountaintop experiences. I've
bailed out on the Lord many times,
but he hu remained faithful.
God ie using me now. Before, he
wun't, becauee it he can't trust Ul!l
he won't use us. I've stopped trying
and etarted trusting, and have ap.
plied this spiritual truth in working
as "chaplam of Waikiki Beach" in
beautiful Hawaii. God hu opened
up a ministry along the beaches, in
the hotels and night spots. I flnd
youth don't want a phony, double-
standard, hypocritical, holier-than-
thou, eelf-appointed "saint" making
with weak, neutral statements about
Jesus. My fellow workers and I
leave no alternative to those seeking
except "yes" or "no" rewarding our
Lord.
You see, either Jesue Christ is the
biggest con man who pulled the big-
gest snow job in history, or he was a
lying, conceited megalomaniac, or a
self-glamorized fool, or a mentally
dieturbed religiou111 type-
Or else he waa who he claimed to
be: the authentic Lord and Savior of
our world.
Who is he to you 1
