It is 60ing to b•? an elec- tion issue in the Newport Beach Council race, and indeed it should be, because the new Council will be the key to the future of the freeway. The Council has the power to sign a freeway agreement with the state and it also has the power NOT to sign. U both city councils --Newport Beach and Costa M•?sa --would join in a firm, united stand against the coastal route, victory would be assured for the freeway fighters, who include most of us. There is much talk of the need for a freeway through our city to take care of the increasing volume of cars. The fact is that a coastal freeway, and the neces- sary feeders, would only add to the traf- fic crisis. More and more traffic would be dumped onto our already crowded city streets, and the congestion would only be grievously aggravated if the freeway is STUDENTS from Newport Harbor higtJ scbool competed in the local stOOent spea.t.ers coot est sponsored by the Balboa Bay Lions Club. Probably .orne of the moet amuain1 on-the- job incidents reported by telephone em- ployees come from inetalle:ra. While doge are traditionaUy the bane of postmen, they rarely encounter an alli1ator or elephant. Not 10 with the inatallera, who are trained and equipped to put in and maintain tele- phone• juat about anywhere. One Bell System inata.ller, for example, was confronted by a five foot alligator in the basement of a cuatomer'e home. ("Just a pet," the owner blithely explained.) An- other installer had to fight off the affection- ate attentions of 15 dogs which a customer was keeping in a 2 room fiat. And then there's the installer who found himself trapped in the equipment room of a sport& arena by an elephant who wouldn't budge from the doorway. The tales are endless, but such incidents are part of the job for these ha:rd·working men-who'll face just about anything to bring you good telephone service.
