HAAPA, owner and publisher of the Ensign (Continued from Page 1) • MARINERS MILE -The Newport Post Office building and some nea:by commercial buildings would be wiped out, and the Mariners Mtle businesses face the loss of their vitally needed parking spaces In the back of the buildings. • CLIFF HAVEN -About55ofthemost outstanding residences In the Harbor Area, the dwellings on the bluff side of Kings Rd., would have to be demolished, providing a spectacular freeway view and traffic fumes lor the residents on the other side of Kings Rd. • UPPER BAY CROSSING-Thtswould wipe out the Bayshore Trailer Park with its 150 units, and also Bayside VIllage with its 300 homes - a total of 450 fa· mllles, a population over 1,000. • CORONA DEL MAR -Almost 100 families would be forced out of their homes In the 700 blocks along 5th Ave., from Narcissus Ave. to Carnation Ave. All of the Shores Apartments, about 100 In all, would be razed. That represents a population of 600 to 900 driven out of their homes. The freeway would gouge an enormous ditch as much as 60 feet deep through Corona del Mar, and the freeway would rise as much as 60 feet In the air at Its highest point near MacArthur Blvd. • TAX BASE LOSS-Hundreds of acres of choice business and residential property would be wiped out, and an enormous amount of assessed valuation thus would be lost. The remaining businesses and homes would pay higher taxes to make up for the tax loss. School taxes would Increase along with city taxes, and this would hit the taxpayers In Costa Mesa as well as In Newport Beach. • POLLUTION -Here Is perhaps the most crucial argument of all, In this day of growing alarm over the contamination of our land and of the air we breathe. Consider the devastating Increase of pollutants in the air when as many as 170 thousand ADDITIONAL cars roar through our town EVERY DAY. This one factor alone Is reason enough to keep the freeway bull- dozers out of Newport Beach and Corona del Mar. After a time, onl y one of the white sailon who had landed !!till !!Utvived, surrounded by women and children. This sailor, Aleundcr Smith, found in one of the chests taken from the Bounty a Bible. He bc:aan to teach his fellow exila its prin· ciples, with the result that his own llfe and uJtt. mately the life of the entire-colony was chanJed. In 1808 the United States ship '"'Topaz" visited the island, and found a thrivina and ~ous com· muniry without liquor, without a jail, without crime, and without sn insane uylum. Tht Bible had chanpd the life of that entire island! On a pillar in the crypt of a church in Rome where the Apostle Paul is said to have been once imprisoned, may be !ICeD the inscription, "The Word of G od is not bound.'' The heroic apost]e. tethered with a chain and awaitina de.lh, is not disheartened. He ha!l full confidence in the spread of the Gospel and in the conquest of Jesus Christ. He writes youna T imothy to be true to Chrilt and the Gospel, "wherein," he says, "I suffer .. , unto bond!!; but the word of God it not bound."1 How true i:s thi!l statement of the apott&e! When the Word of God i!l proclaimed with tulhority or read with sincerity. it is not bound. Unique about the teachina of Jnus Christ wu not onty the simplicity with which he tauaht but also his authority. After Jesus had preached his Ser- mon on the Mount, the Bible states that "the people were a11tonished at his doctrine: for he tauatu them as one havinJ authority.''4 When Jesus quoted the Old Testament he did so with eonftdence, and he undencored the fact that the Scriptures cannot br broken. Today there is a movement afoot to take away the authority of the Seripturn . When the Bible toes down, then anarchy and confusion will take its place. This condihon will be followed by a savaa· ery tuc:h u the world has never known. This aen- eration must face the appallina fact that it is either back to the Bible or bac" to the junale. If the church decides that the Bible is oot authoritative, then the nerve of cvanaclism and missions will have been cut. Some yean aao. I decided to accept the Scriptures by faith: There were problems I could not reason throuab. Wben.l ac:c:epkd the Bible u the authori· tative Word of God -by faith, I found immedi· atety thai it became a flame in my hands. I am noc advocatina bibliolatry. I am not suuest- inJ that we worship the Bible, any more than • soldier wonhipi his sword or a suraeon wonhips his ~ealpel. I am, however, fervently urJina a GOJpel pracntatK>n that says without a~OI)' and without a..mbtJUity , '"ThU!I uith lhe Lord.'' The world IOf,p f01 flnality and authority. II is weary of theoloaical ftounderina and uncertainty. I am convinced that people are open to the Gc:.pel, if it D aeuoncd with authority and proclaimed u God'• own Word. The Greatest Event in the History of the World "Yes. you a re saved no t by the church, either Cathohc o r Protestant, but by a Person -the LoRD J ESUS C HR IST, God's only begotten Son." "So you \ee that it would do no good fo r you to become Protestanu, for there arc mill ion:~ of Protestants who arc not saved, who have pro- fessed to embrace Christianity, but have never accepted the C hmt of C hristianity." There is a controversy ra&ina today. It revolves around the questton as to whether the Bible is reliable and authoritative. In the letter of Jude we read, "For there arc: «rtain men crept in una· wares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, unaocfly men, tuminJ the era« of ow God into lasciviousness, and dcnyinathc only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ "1 Our meuaae of the Ga~pel coma from the Bible. and the Bible say•.
