A MESSAGE FOR THE 4TH OF JULY
The revolutionaries are saying," Amer-
Ica, change it or lose it." Loyal Americans
say, "Love and defend our country, or
leave it." If there is any change to be
made, It should be a turning back to the
mighty faith In God that provided the firm
foundation upon which our republic was
established.
On this occasion of celebrating the 4th
of July signing o! the Declaration of Inde-
pendence 204 years ago, let us read with
appreciation these words of a Wisconsin
pastor, Norman Ream, quoted !rom the
publication, Christian Economics:
The principles of the Christian talth were built into the very
fabric and structure of lhe American empire. One literally
feels ttlts as he reads the conclUding words ol the Declaration
of Independence, which sound almost remlnisceti of a chur ch
covenant.
"With tlrm r eliance on the protectlon of Divine Provl·
deoce, we mutually pledge to each other our Uves, our
tortuoes and our sacred honor ."
Listen to those words o( a F'reocbman who visited the United
States in its infancy aoo witnessed for himseU how loSepatable
~ere faith and freedom. His name was Alexis de Tocqueville

No one likes to cry wolf. But as a financial institution
responsible for more than 438 million dollars we must
speak out.
Today we are facing a future full of uncertainty.
Even the most famous economists can't agree on what
will happen in the next six months. Investors in the stock
market face · serious problems. Inflation has not been
checked.
Your first responsibility is to your family ... to
protect it against any of the uncertainties of tomorrow.
Therefore, we recommend that you immediately
put as much of your capital and savings as you can into
an insured savings and loan association account. In any
insured association . Naturally, we feel that Mutual
Savings has a little more to offer including a choice of
savings plans from 5% to ?lf2 %, insured up to $20,000.
But act today. A phone call will start your account.

All-Electric
You deserve the comfort of an all-electric Medallion
Home. And for an average of only 56¢ a week
more in utility bills y~m can have it.
The cost of electricity for the average all-electric
Medallion Home is only 56t a week more than the
cost of both gas and electricity for the typical
home using gas. (Established in a survey of more
than 8,000 homes .. Bills were typical of a family
of four living in a 3-bedroom home.)
Half the homes surveyed were all-electric Medallion
Homes, where everything was run by electricity
-no gas. Electric cooking. Electric heating.
Electric water heaters.
The other half of the homes surveyed used gas.

We have learned the plan of our
aalvation from no one except
those through whom the Goa-
pel ha.s come down to us. They are
the men who at one time proclaimed
the message of Christ in public and
at a later period, by the will of God.
handed it down to us in the Scrip-
tures to be the ground and pillar of
our faith.
After our Lord rose from the dead,
the apostles were clothed with power
from on high when the Holy Spirit
came upon them. They went out to
the ends of the earth, preaching the
good things that come to us from
God, and proclaiming peace from
heaven to men, all and each of the
apostles being equally in posseYion
of the Gospel of God.
So Matthew among the Hebrews
i8sued a writing of the Gospel in
their own tongue, while Peter and
Paul were preaching the Gospel and
laying the foundations of the church.
After their decease Mark, the disci·
pie and interpreter of Peter. also
handed down to us in writing what
Peter had preached. Then Luke. the
follower of Paul, recorded in a book
the Gospel as it was preached by
Paul. Afterward John. the disciple
of the Lord who had leaned upon
his breaat, himself published the
Gospel while he was residing at
Ephesus in Asia.
All of these declared to us that
there is one God, maker of heaven
and earth, proclaimed by the law
and the prophetR. and one Christ the
Son of God. If anyone does not agree
with these truths, he despises the
companions of the Lord, and Christ
the Lord himself. He even despises
the Father, and stands self..con·
demned.
For there was no way we could
have learned the things of God un.
les.~ ou r T eacher, being the Word,
had become man. No one could de·
clare to us the things of the Father
except his own Word. "For who has
known the mind o( the Lord, or who
has been his cou nse'lor?'" (Romans
11 :34). We CCiuld have loamtd ln
DO wr.:t other than by -lnl' our
Teacher. 10 that .,... mlrbt become
Imitators of hla worlul and doono of
hie worda, and 10 have communion
with him, recelvinr our increue
from him who ia perfect and before
all creation. He p.ve himself a ran.
10m for ua who had been led into
captivity. redeeming us by hla blood
In accordance with bla reuonable
[apirituat•] nature.
The church, although aeattenld
over the whole civilized world, re-
ceived from the apoatlea and their
disciples ita faith in one God, the
Father Almighty, who made the
heaven and the earth and the seaa;
and in Christ Jesus. the Son of God,
who wa.s made flesh for our aalva-
tion ; and in the Holy Spirit, who
through the prophets proclaimed
the divine ordering of the affaire of
the universe.
So the apostolic tradition is pre·
served in the church and has come
down to us. Let us tum, then, to the
demonstration from the Scriptures
of those apostles who recorded the
Gospel. In their writings they set
forth t heir co nvictions regarding
God, declaring that our Lord J esus
Christ is the truth, and that in him
is no lie. For a lie has no fellowship
with the truth, any more than light
with darknes.,. The disciples did not
name any being as God, or call any.
one Lord, except him who is the true
God and Lord of aiL
This can be shown by the recorded
words of the Lord. He revealed him-
self as the Messiah predicted by the
prophets, the Son of God, to those
of the ci rcumcision [the Jewish
people). He ~hawed himself to be
the One who restored freedom to
men and gave them the heritage of
eternal life. In their tum, the apos-
tles taught the Gentiles that they
s hould give ·UP idol iz.ing sticks and
stones to wor5lhip the true God who
had created and established the
whole human family, and who by
his ordaining power nourished, in-
creased, strengthened and preserved
them, and gave them their being.
The apostles taught also that the
Gentiles were to look for God's Son,
Jesus Christ, who redeeined us from
apostasy with his own blood so that
we might be made a holy people.
They declared that this same Jesus
will come down from heaven in the
power of the Father. to execute
judgment upon all and to give the
good thinp of God freely to those
who have kept his comma.ndmenta.
The Scriptures relate that the
Lord Jeeus Christ showed himself
most plainly to the disciples, and re·
vea.led his Father also, so that they

He re:rlled. "That the worlul of God

(John 9 :8).
Now the work of God is the fash~

ment uys, "The Lord took elay from

In thi1 caae apat on the ground and
made clay and smeared it on the

of God to those who could under-
stand. For that whieh the Artificer,
the Word, had omitted to form in
the womb [the blind man's eyes),
the Lord Jesus Christ now supplied
publicly, that the works of God
might be revealed in him. He did it
in order that we might not try to
seek eome other hand by which man
might have been fashioned.
In such ways the Lord showed
that the hand of God which fanned
us at the beginning, a nd which also
formed us in the womb, has in these
last times sought out us who were
lost, winning back his own, taking
up the lost sheep upon his shoulders
and with joy restoring it to the fold
of life. For the Creator of the world
is truly the Word of God: and this
is our Lord, who was made man.
who existed in thi!'! world, and who
in an invisible manner contains all
things created and is inherent in the
entire creation, since the Word of

hung upon the tree, that he might
s um up all things in himself.
Thus man, who had been led rap·
tive in the past. was rescued from
the gras p of his possessor [Satan]
according to the tender mercy of
God the Father, who had comp.as.
sian on his own handiwork and gave
to it salvation, restoring it by means
of the Word -that is, by Christ -
in order that man might learn by
actual proof that he receives eternal
life not of him~lf, but by the free
gift of God.
This is the faith that we have
received and seek to pre~rV'e as
something that is always renewing
its youth by the Spirit of God. Thi.<~
is the gift of God that has been en-
trusted to the chuiTh as breath wa:~.
to the first created man. Where the
church is, there is the S pirit of God;
and where the Spirit of God is, there
is the church, and every kind of
Grace; for the Spirit is truth.
