He ft.Dh to wiD ARVO E. HAAPA, owntr and publisher of the Ensign (Continued from Page 1) and Laguna Beach have succeeded In getting the freeway route to bypass in- land. Many other cities have likewise succeeded. Newport Beach deserves the same consideration, even though we have a giant land company In our midst with tremendous commercial developments looking for huge traffic thorougbtares for out of town shoppers. The Irvine Co. is not l evelling with us about that threat of being strangled by traffic. The implication is that with a freeway through our town, this problem would be solved. Thls just is not so, and the testimony comes from one of the best experts In the business: William Hashl- moto, assistant district engineer of the state division of hlgbways, who is per- sonally Involved In the coast freeway planning. He told the Newport Beach City Council last March 26 that the traffic volume on Coast Hwy. through our city would NOT be reduced if the freeway is constructed on the adopted coast route In our city. Let that slnk in for a while, Mr. Irvine Company. Not only would we get NO RELIEF in Coast Hwy. traffic, but we WOULD GET addi- tional pollutant-producing traffic up to 170 THOUSAND CARS PER DAY through our town. This information also comes from Mr. Hashimoto.'! have be ard no comment from the Irvine Co. concerning this expert testimony. Vice-Mayor Rogers raised another point that bits right at the heart of the matter: that the Irvine Co . is not "people oriented." The Irvine Co. cried a lot in trying to r efute that charge. But In the case of the coast freeway route, big hearted Irvine Co. is not weeping. I nave beard no kind words of compassion over the 700 families (more than 2,000 peopl e) and the businesses that would be driven out of their homes and offices !:.y the 10 and 12-lane freeway that the Irvine Co. wants to bulldoze through our city. I have heard no comment from the Irvine Co. on this human tragedy. I have previously written the above facts to Irvine President Wj!!iam Mason, and printed the letter In the July 9 issue of the Ensign. This letter, wbich also brought no reply from the lrvlne Co., closed with the following plea to Mr. Mason: "I appeal to your dedication to the city In whlch you make your home, and I ask that you do not bring upon our city the hardshlp and dissension and suffering that a freeway would c3ll8e.'' • • • RAQUEL WELCOME NOT UNANUKOUS Last week's welcome to glamour star Raquel Welch as a Newport Beach rest- dent was not the unanimous sentiment of the Harbor Area.
