• BILL SPURGEON -"MR. SCOUTING"
A friendship I have prized during these
many years in the Harbor Area has been
that of Bill Spurgeon, whom I have never
heard ill spoken of, and from whom I
heard no harsh words spoken about an·
other. Our community and the nation have
gained immeasurably from his Joyal Am-
ericanism and patriotism, his dedicated
service to the youth of our country, and
his tireless efforts to prom-Jte the char-
acter building influence of scouting. He
was 11Mr . Scouting," not only here in
his home community, but also throughout
the United States, where he had traveled
extensively to t ell the story of what can
be done for youth.
Bill, who showed his faith through his
works, fully ex emplified the Biblical ad-
monition: "Train up a child In the way
he should go; and when he is old, he will
not depart from it." His sudden and
untimely death is a shock to us all, and
he will be g reatly missed,

• "HALT THIS DEPREDATION"
Huntington Beach provided some of the
opposition that he lped to defeat the Bad-
ham freeway bill, which would have eli-
minated the coastal r oute from Newport
Beach and Cor ona del Mar. But from
the Huntington Beach News come some
well consider ed r e marks that t ell our
side of the argument. Here is what editor
Geor ge Farquhar had to say in his fr ont
page column last week :
One has to adm1re the courage of state assemblyman Robert
E. Badham of ~ewport Beacll In his singular battle against the
establlshment in Sacramento. The establlsbmeDI: ln this case
IS the state freeway commission ... virtual fiat body •.. the
state highway commission , •. not exactly a bunch of soft lt!s

Ail Badham Is trying to do Is save the aatural beauty, the
marine ecology or Newport's beautiful harbor and waterfront.

be Isolated in the middle of an Interchange.

• FEEDING LITTLE CHILDREN
The Ensign appreciates receiving let-
ters to the editor on a variety of topics
and with a variety of viewpoints. We are
glad t o publish a l etter today from Wendy
Herbert, who is answering a previous
criticism of the UNICEF children's fund
program and greeting card sale project.
There is no argument about the need
for a program to help children, where-
s oever they may be. But Mrs. Herbert
is overlooking one basic point of weak-
ness in the UNICEF program: It is a
government to go·;ernment project, not
people to people. The recipient govern-
ment determines where the funds are to
go. Do you suppose that Communist Rus-
sia, or Communist China, or Communist
Poland, or other totalitarian governments
are giving the money to people who are
seeking freedom frorn tyranny? Do you
not suppose, rather, that the disburse-
ment of UNICEF tuncts is being used as
a tool to tighten the totalitarian grip
over the enslaved people? AIJ Mrs. Her-
bert says, Cbrlst does not allow political
beliefs of a sick cbUd's parent. to deter-
mlne HlS decision to give aid and comfort
to that cll11d. But communists do,

ln r ecent articles, we have
talked of "decentrallr.a.Uon " as
meaning that each school oper.

each school has the authority
to "transfer " all teachers Wl·

teach the new methods.
At the present Ume these
tradiUooa\ teachers who are
moving to other schools In the

many teachers seems to be
that by 1914 they will ban to

In The Marafino. RCA craftsmen have
created a Spanish -style cabinet of ageless
beauty. The massive silhouette w ith its
v irile lines is relieved by delicate M oorish
accents. Note the graceful arcaded speaker
panels and ornate design of tumings that
highlight the grille area. Equally attractive
is the block·carving effect below the
picture area. This furniture showpiece is
surprisingly easy to move. thanks to awivel

I wa" born in the trough of the de-
prel\.Sion. 1935, when the 20th
century was just half its present
age. My parents lived in Daytona
Beach, Florida, where my dad prac-
ticed denti"try. Dad was an avid
golfer, and one day when I was ten
years old he drove me to the Day-
tona Beach Country Club and took
me out to watch him play. I have
often wondered if he realized that
I would be spending a good part of
the rest of my life pursuing a little
white ball all around the world.
The pro at the dub was friendly
to me, and I'll never forget the day
he gave me my tir"t clubs. a cut-
down-to-size 7-iron and a driver,
They were not new, but they were
the prettie~t clubs I'd ever seen. It
didn't take me long to find my way
around the cou r!+e. Ry the time I was
a senior at Seabreeze High School,
I had won the Florida state high
school champion ~hip, the Florida
State Four-Ball twice. the Daytona
Beach Club championship six time!..
and other area t ou rnaments. My
game wa" re&lly ~tarting to form.
After graduation I enrolled at
the U ni ver~ity of Florida at Gaine!\-
ville on a golf ~~.eholar~hip. For two
co nsecu tive year!-! I was elected to
the univenity's athletic hall of fame.
In 1956 after my junior year I en-
tered five stra ight tou rnament.~ and
won them all. By that time I had
become completely ab"<!rbed in the
game and had no time for studies
or anything e lse. exrepl-
Thcre wa!'l a young lady I had
met in Orlando, the daughter of the
manager and owner of the Dub!-1-
dread Country Club. Her name wa1-1
Joan Oann. and she waR a fin e golfer
hen~elf, havinK won many peewee
and junior tournament!'!. J oanie
transferred to the Univer Ri ty of
Florida in her sophomore year. We
started dating in the spring of J 966.
During the spring and summer
months of that year I entered the
Southern Intercollegiate tournament
at Athens, Georgia, and won it with
a 284, four under par. Then I took
the Florida Open, this time shooting
a 278, ten under par. But what
caueed me to quit school wM the
Okefenokee Invitational tourna-
ment, where I won with a 264 that
broke the cour!M! record. I waa 24
ltrokea under par for 72 holes. After
that I could think only of becoming
a golf profeMional.
It looked, in fact, ~ if the world
had come and laid itself at my feet.
Joanie and I were married that fall,
and I joined the P.G.A. tour in
January. However, my ftnt year
on the tour w~ terrible, and while
I 11howed irrprovement in the years
that followed, It wu a gradual pro. ceu. ·.
Back in Daytona Beach J had
joined the Flnrt Baptiot Church
when I wu elrht 7ean old, and
later we moved to Calvary Baptist.
I wu a fairl7 rerular attendant at
Sunday School -there were a lot
of ltan on the attendance chart
after my name, but there weno alao
a tot of blanka. Then I wont off to eon-. and not once did 1 ever
attend a churc.h eervlce or anr kind
of nollrfouo function. Church just
didn't 8MII1 to matter. r ..... on my
own .
By 1962 I
menu, and f~l!o'~~~~~.!: me elected to ihe
Ryder Cup team. Aa our
approached school age our third
son was born, Joanie began to travel
less and leM. Gradually my way of
life changed.
You see, on the golf tour we have
to spend only about six houn a day
on the cou rse. Allowing ten houra
for sleep, and two hours for eating,
that still leaves six hours day after
day with nothing to do. I had aet
standards and goals for my life, but
one by one I saw thew standardA
toppling. I found myself saying a
lot of things that11 had promised
myself I'd never say, and doing a lot
of thinp I htfd promieed I'd never
do. The bubble I was floating around
in just blew up, and I didn't know
what to do about it.
My father and mother had given
me good training, and I decided that
my trouble was that I had left God
out of my life. So for the next six
month~ 1 tried a new tack. I read
my Bible every day, prayed at leut
three timeR a day, and aimed at
livi ng a morally perfect life ; but
many time~ I was miserable.
Meanwhile I had developed a
mechanical ftaw in my golf swing
and fou nd it very difficult to cor-
rect. My game began to sour; I had
a lot of good rounds, but also many
bad rounds. One July evening In
1966 I came back to my motel after"
a diMppointing 18 holes in the
Cleveland Open. I had shot a 76. I
ate dinner alone, returned to my
room, turned on the television and
got on my bed. A large choir came
into focus and I thought. "Boy,
that's the last thing I want to
watch ."
I scanned the TV section of the
newspaper to see if the "Twilight
Zone" or 80me other entertaining
program might be on another chan-
nel. I diBCOvered that it wu a Billy
Graham CruMde that I wu watch-
ing. Before I could switch to another
channel Cliff' Barrows came on the
screen and invited Bobby Richard~
son, second baseman for the New
York Yankees, to My a few worda.
Well, Bobby Ri chard110n wu my
hero, and I ju11t couldn't beUeve that
an athlete could or would Btand up
and say what he did. He told about
his ~rsonal relationahip with leeua
Chnat. and what he ltood for in hia
life. I found myaelf aaldn•, "Dave,
how tall do you stand In llfef' I
realized that I wasn't even eutinr
a shadow.
Mr. Graham gave hie meseaae,
and he IJ'Ot to me throua-h the Scrip.
tun, which I had been rea<llna-quite
a bit on my own. He quoted the
vene, "For all have etnned, and
come Ahort of the rlory of God." I
knew that I had milled the mark
In my life and that I wu oer.!rated
from God. Then he aaid, • It any
man be in Chri11t he Ia a new c:rea,..
tion; old thinp are P&Ued away;
behold, all thinp are become new."
I knew then for the ~m time that
I had a chance to become a new pereon.

afterward .some of the golf
froe who are Christians asked me if
would be intere!lted in joining them
in a weekly Bible 11tudy they were
starting. For over three and a half
yean now we have been meeting at
leaat once a week. Often we invite
Christian leadera in different citiell
to come and meet with us. In 1968
we arranged a banquet for all the
touring pros in Atlanta and Mr.
Graham spoke to approximately
two hundred people, mostly golfertl
and their wives (see DECISION, Sep-
tember. 1968).
One day on the rolf course about
two yean aro another pro Mid to
me. "Do I look like a happy guy to
you?" I knew what kind of life he
was leading, and I replied, "Out-
wardly you do, but inwardly are
you really happy?" I also Mid,
"When we get through I'd like to
talk to you about .something that
meana a lot to me." He mu8t have
auapected what 1 W811 contemplat-
ing, because when the round wa111
over he quickly took off'. That really
got me to thinking : What would I
have aaid to him? Then I realized
for the ftnt time that I needed to
know "how to" share my faith.
God' I tJming is .so fantastic : the
very next day and in fact the whole
next week I waa taught some things
about prayer that r didn't know be-
fore. I learned aew ways to study
and read God's Word; I learned to
obey God moment by moment and
to ahare Christ with others.
I am stiJI learning to tru11t God
for the details in my life. I know he
knowa more about it than I do. Each
morning I aak the Lord to take con-
trol of my life, to make me what he
want.a me to be. If I am on the
eoune, or doing eomething el&e, and
have a particularly difficult decision
to make, I don't heAltate to oay.
••Lord, You know how You want thia
to work out. I'm putting It in Your
banda!' That doettn't mean 1 send
up an 808 11ignal every minute. It's
more a matter of juat trusting him
to run my life, whether on the golf
ooune or anywhere else. I al80 aak
God to bring aerou my path any-
one he wanta me to speak to that
day. Certainty all thlnp can't torn
out u I would have t hem, 110 1 juat
trult him In Romans 8 :28.
It would be allly to aay that 'I do
not have problema. Everybody doea ;
but I han found that if I abide In
him, he Jrivee me the power to walk
on top of my problema. In fact, that
