*WHY NOT LET THE PEOPLE DECIDE'!
A." exp·~~ted, thP.r e is :1 s oft sell going

that it is foolish to put the freeway issue
up to the vote or the people,
Folks who are wont to talk piously
about the democratic way of life and
about the sanctity of the voice of the
people are suddenly shocked at the idea
that the people want to translate their
voice into action, )
Don't let those soft sell artists con you

dear Freeway Fighters, Go right ahead
with your pr oject and le t the local voters
ex er c ise the right that was so wisely
written into our Newport Beach city char-
ter--the right of initiative petition to
put an im~ortant issue on the ballot,
Such a right is the very essence of our
form of government, It is a right that
certainly has not been abused during the
existence of our charter. It takes extreme
cause to generate a petition drive, and
such , a cxisis is indeed -at hand, Our
Freeway Flghters ·are striving to save
'our community from being .ravaged by
a monstr ous swath of concrete and by
hundr eds of thousands of additional cars
speeding daily through our town,
There are two kinds of people who are
opposing the initiative petition: Thos e with
vested interest in governing , the politi-
cians, that is, wh o f ear a loss of power;
and those who have a vested inter est in
bulldozing that freeway through the heart
or Newport Beach and Cor ona del M 'lr I
About 99 per cent of the r est of us are
for including the freeway out, and for
l etting the people decide,

Our need is tor t he gract-and
