• BACK THE UNITED fl!ND CAMPAIGN
Why support the United fund drive·) A convincing answer
~ou.s giveo by James Kerr, president a.od chief execuUve
oCCieer of Avco Corp., at a Harbor Area United fund luncheon
a.t the Airporter Inn last Thursday. Mr. Kerr, whose firm
wUl move Us headquarters Into that glotss Hned tower oow
nearing completion to Newport Center, told a gro1.4> of local
business leaders to work hard in the United Fund campaign
aDd ''keep the government out of mort> wella..re action." The
reason is that we can do the job rn)r e efft ctently and more
eUecUveiy, and at hall the cost, througtl our own efforts, be-
cause those "free" federal ha!ld...outs turn out to be doubly
expensive, aOO It's our own money that's being wasted. Help

1 tb.lnk aomebow even tbe lencth of time that would

Scriptures keep a carefUl record of time followtq
tb.e Hne of descent of Chris t, and His birth was
heralded by a star whose meaning was known to paean
a strooomers; and stars were put in the heavens to ctve
Urnes and seasons for man. Certainly the Messianic
elleftemnt that marked the First Century of our
redemption was universal and was shared by the Roman
poet VircU as well as the Meaopobm lan astronomers.
Even the puston and death by which the promised
Saviour would pay out the penalty for Adam's sin in
fUll was foretold and recorded In the Scr iptures .
God's jUstice demanded that this Saviour, alte r He had
sutfered death, would be raised again and exalted on
high to re!«n over all things and over all limP.
When It all happened, it didn 't take many words to
proelalrn the news. Christ-He who was the promised
redeemer--died !or our sins acco rding to the Scrip-
tures. That He died He had to havp been born, and that
He Is Christ He had to have sutrered as Christ would
-All of tbls is according to the Scriptures .
He was burled. Hi s body returned to the earth from

don't need a preacher to tell me what 11 means to me
I know better than anyone else It ce rtainly is not and
could not be nf'ws that God lo ves me. Otherwis e He
wouldn't have made me There IS no olhf'r posstblf'

It Is not nf'ws that God loves all mankmd, and that He

Because I am a human being, a son of Allam I In -

Beginning the Day with God
0 God, thou art my God; early will I seek tb ...
By Robert Murr~y McCheyne
1 ought to pray before seeing any one. Often when t sleep long, or meet w1th
ot~ers early, and then have famtly prayer and breakfast, and forenoon callers, often
11 IS ei@Yen or twelve o'clock before I begm secret prayer. This IS a wretched sys·
tern. It unscnplural. Christ rose befo•e day, and went into a solitary place. David
says, "Early will I seek thee." Mary Magdalene came to the sepulchre while it was
yet dark. Family prayer loses much ol its power and sweetness; tnd 1 ctn do no
good to those that come to seek me. The conscief'ICe feels euitty, the soul unfed
the ltmp not trimmed. Then, when secret prayer comes, the soul is often out of
tune. I feel it far better to beain with God -to see his face first -to get my
soul near to him before it is near another.
If I have slept too tong, or •m going: on an early journey, it is best to dress
hurriedly, and have a few minutes 1lone with God, thin to give it up for lost.
But in cenerat it is best to have It leut one hour alone wtth Qod, before en-
gagina In anythin' else. At the same tm'le I must be areful not to reckon com·
munion with God Dy minutes or hours or solitude. I have J)Of'ed over my Biblt 1nd
on my knees for hou~ with liHie or no communion: 1nd my times of solitude hi'Vt
often been times of greatest temptthon. -"Memoir of McCheyne" by Bontr.
