An official car pulled into our drive.
way sooner than we expected. It
contained Mrs. Edwards, the pro-
bation oft\cer, Penny, and piles of
clothing.
"You may want some time to think
it ove r," Mrs. Edwards said, "but
if she isn't spending the night with
you, I'll have to take her to Juvenile
Hall. She can't go back to the home
where she was." We helped Penny
unload her clothes, guitar, records,
stuft'ed animals and several dozen
hair rollers that had fallen to the
car floor. ((anyone had told my wife
and me a few days earlier that we
would become foster parents of a
straggly, red.haired runaway ...
But Sandie, my wife, hadn't in-
fanned me that she had prayed for
months that we might do just that.
With a two-year-old baby girl of our
own, and another child on the way,
it seemed out of the question. Then
on the Monday before Christmas
came the call that altered the course
of ou r Jives.
"Putor Chandler," Mrs. Edwards
said, "do you know of any family in
your churth that might be interested
in having a foster daughter live with
them? She's not a bad girl, hut she
is a ward of the court. She ran away
because of a chaotic home situation,
and turned herself in to the authori.
ties.''
She became their foster daughter and
then God adopted her into His family
Sandie overheard my side of the
conversation and began praying in
the bedroom. At the same time I
had a strange feelin g about the girl
and her needs -a kind of com pas.
sion. We did have a spare bedroom,
at least until our ~ond baby came.
"M n . Edwards," I said. "I can't
t hink of any family to recommend
for Penny, but Mrs. Chandler and I
would like to meet her."
From the first night that s he came
to live with us, we began to share
with Penny our hearts as well u
our home. She talked freely about
her childhood and home lif e. It was
a twisted maze of instability, quar-
reling, drink and a shuttling between
relatives and parent !mbstitutes. She
counted 17 grammar 5Chools she had
attended. By the time she was a high
school senior she was making a des-
perate bid for freedom and love and
understanding. Finally she ran away
from home and turned herself in at
a police station as being-"out of
control."
Penny's face was beautiful, with
clean, sharp features and expressive
eyes, but it was almost hidden by the
ftopping, unruly strands of hair that
continually fell in front of it. To her
the hair was a symbol o f her indi.
viduality and rebellion. Her high
school teachers advised her to have
it styled dift'erently, but she refu~.
After dropping several unsucceMful
hint,, my wife and I decided to con-
centrate on t he positive. We stressed
Penny's outstanding qualities. "Your
face is one of your finest assets," I
told her one day. "I'd like to see
more of it." When she agreed to try
a change of hair style (as long as
we paid the beauty operator), I
knew we had scored a major break-
through.
Each night Penny curled up at the
foot of our bed for a time of shar-
ing. Bible-reading and prayers. Her
mother had been minister of a spir-
itualist church, and she delighted in
describing her seances and "con-
tacts" with the dead. Her faith WM
a confused hodR"epodge of !mpersti-
tion and religious lore.
One evening my wife viewed the
World Wide film Lucia at a neigh·
borhood church. As Penny perched
that night on the edge of our bed,
my wife reviewed the plot of the
movie, plainly and powerfully. I
watched Penny's eyes and knew ehe
was touched. We talked at length
about trust in GOO, about Jesus
Christ being a living Person who
through the Holy Spirit actuaiJy
could come to live within her heart.
Gently, just before we prayed{ San-
die euggested that Penny cou d ask
Christ to become the Lord of her
life, just u the girl in the tUm h•d
done. We each prayed a loud, but
Penny said nothmg about opening
her heart to God .
Ne.xt mornfnl' she wae up earlier
than uaual and came bounding into
our bedroom, beaminJ'. "You know
what )'UU ufd I could do laot nl~rht
before we prayed?'' ohe aaked.
"No, what?'' I replied, hoping ohe

About two weeks later our baby
girl became ill with a high fever. A
small group of adults was meeting
in our home for Bible study and
prayer. Someone suggested bringing
Heather to the living room and pny-
ing for her recovery. I held the limp
and fever ish form of our d&uj;fhter
in my arms while two or three olfered
prayer. Suddenly I felt warm and
flushed : Penny was praying aloud
and the words were moving and ~in+
cere. In that moment of faith ~pir.
itual ties bound us together. As it
turned out. ou r baby recovered.
In the months that followed Penny
brought many joys to our little fam.
ily. One June afternoon Sandie and
I went to the high school football
field and watched ou r girl march
out to the tune of "Pomp and Cir-
cumstance,'' to receive her h ij;fh
school diploma. SULtely and poised
in her cap and gown, ~he stepped

an unexpected tear fogged the view.
tinder. In a few dayR Penny would
be leaving us ....
Six months afterwa rd. Penny and
Bill faced me before the altar in the
chapel at the UniverRity of the Pa-
cific. They had been duly counseled
in the responsibilitieR of Christian
marriage, but only God knows the
heart. "Dearly beloved," I began,
"we are assembled here in the pres-
ence of Cod to join this man and
this woman in holy marriage." This
woman? Cou ld it be possible? The
six months had passed so quickly.
"In joy and in sorrow," I read on,
looking into the crowd where my
eyes met Sandie's, glistening in the
glow of the candlelight.
A year and a half later we received
a letter from Penny. Bill was in the
Philippines. where he was waiting
for his tighter group to be assigned.
She expected a two-year interrup.-
tion before her husband could rt·
turn, God willing, to her and the ir
little son. J ohnny. There were more
le.'~sons for Penny to learn: maturity,
patience, faith.
He r letter contained a hint that
ROmething had happened to Bill,
~omething that we had been praying
about on those evenings when Penny
.<~a t at the foot of ou r bed. "Oh. I've
got great news!" she said. ''I'm sure
now that Bill has accepted Christ. He
didn't come right out and say so in
those words. but he did write that
with his life given to Chri8t he
knows he'll be a much better hus-
band and father when he comes home.
He says he knows he's well on his
way to becoming' a true Christian.
I'm so happy you can't imagine ... "
But perhaps we can. for we know
how happy we were when God sent
us our Penny from heaven.

The '·Box," an amphibious

The box has 4-wheel drive-

The body stru<:t ure is what
holds the parts together_ The
