I told ham that tlnt w•s not evolution; il wu merely a development of the theory of 1\fendPI Ly whi ch varieties of species are developed in the course of time. What I wanted explained was evolution. If the canary one thou1an~ yean ago was today a horse, or some other animal, that would be evolution. He said th11.1 such develop· ment wouiJ be unerly ridiculous. I asked him if he could give an ex~mple of rhat. He said that he could. He th~n upla1ned that hundreds of yur~ ago the nt·groid rice had come to this country from Africa and through ev olution we now have the mulatto. J asked him if he still belined in evolution and he 1aid he did. l lhen asked him why he could not olfer tome proof; he uplained that e"'olution w•• an ex· tremely Mow process, taking millions of ye.n, and each element in the process was so minute that compared with the life of an indi't'i dual man, no man could actually tee evolution ar work, but he waa aure. that it was lhe greatest force on earth today and was still operatins.
