• ON GUARD AGAINST OUR LAWKAKERS AND THINK TANKS
How does this ooe grab :rou: Parldbg tees~ to $100 a year
for the "privilege'" of parfd.Dc 1D troat of your own home! Tbal
is just about the most preposterous ol the many brain storms
emanating from the think tanks lD and arOWld the Newport
Beach City Hall. 'l
This ooe should be hooted out of sigJI.t b}' an exasperated
and completely fed-tc:l cttlsenry, a.od tbe lh1nt tanks them-
selves should be scuttled in the oea.rby deep waters of the
blue Pacltic.
first there was lbe scheme ror ''back door" t•eiODlng of
our R-2 property to R-1 bJ changing the law to require two
garage spaces for each dwelling unit. Tben came the new
shoCker, the proposed fee for overlligbt parking. This $100
tee would do the e~a.ct opposite of Its lotended purpose. It
wou_ld quickly empty whatever garages are DOW being used
for car storage. Residents in the congestion areas would be
sure to get their cars out to the curb in trout of their bomes,
ot else they would be paying a fee tor nothing while ou_t-of-
towners grab the parking spaces free for their day at the
beach.
New Jaws should reflect the wishes of a considerable major-
ity of the people, and oot the t.uK:ifu.l dreaming of the planner.
I hear no clamor for this type o! oc dinance. Why must we be
eternally on the alert against c e.., legis tattoo generated by
our elected aOO appointed cit) off1cials? Why can't they
leave us secure In our borne and property?

*"KNEE-JERK UBERALS RULE THE AIR WAVES "
Th.e airwaves are almost monopo lized by left-leaning com -
mentators, and you can almost count the conservatin pro-
grams on yolll' thumbs. Robert K, Dorlllb ol KTLA-TV is one
of the ver y few cooserva.Uves on the air. He ~d caustic
words of comment at an Operation Alert plannlng session at
the Stutt Shirt restaurant in Newport Beach last week.
"Koee-jerk liberals are holding down lirtually every Im-
portant oetwork news post on television." he sa.id, ••and that
goes for ma jor talk shows, too," referring to such television
personalities as David Frost, Johnny Carson and Diet Cavett.
Mr. Dornan r elated some of the methods used by commeo-
tator s: lies and distortion of facts about tbe war In soutbeut
A·sla, favorable news treatment for communist Russia, play-
ing up Items benefiting the communist conspiracy, playing
down the shameful prisoner-of-war sUuation.
What can be done? Here are Mr. DorDLO's suggestions:

Firat, the reeurreetion of Christ brinp liDht
to thoee of ua in deapair in 1970. Aa we have
already seen, the world of today Ia in darlmeaa.
There Is darkneu around us and wjthin us. The
Bible teacheS that our minds have been blinded
by Satan : "And this is the condemnatiOn, that
light is come into the world, and men loved
darkneaa rather than light, bee&uee their deeda
were evU" (John S :19). In the midst of the
darkn ... Jeaua Chriat Ia the Light of the world.
Under the pidure of Peter Milne, hanaina in
the church he founded on the little New Hebrides
leland of Nruna, are to be found theae words:
"When he came there wu no light. When he
died there wu no darkneu. '' When Christ came.
into the world there wu no light. Matthew
(quoting Isaiah) aaid of him, .. The people
which sat in darkneas saw great light; and
to them which sat in the region and shadow
of death light io oprun1r up" (l\latthew 4:16).
Harry Lauder once aaid that during hia boy·
hood, he could tell where the lamplighter was
"by the t'rail Of light he left behind him." Christ
was the heavenly Lamplighter. Everywhere he
went, the midnight gloom of sin and despair
disappeared before him.
As 1 have had the privilege of traveling around
the world, 1 have been able to tell where the
heavenly LampJighter has been by the trail of
light that he baa left behind him. Show me a
place in the world where the message of Christ's
death and resurrection baa been proclaimed and
accepted, and I will show you a place where
man's love for man is a little deeper, where the
standard of living is a little higher, where worn·
en are respected, where there is a semblance
of law and order, and where family ties are
strong and enduring. The Light that shone from
that empty tomb on the first Easter morning
has shed its kindly rays down through the cen-
turies. dispelling the shadows and gloom that
sin and selfishne88 always bring.
The world's difficulty is summed up in the
words, "And the light shineth in darkne88; and
the darkness understood it not." The light of
Easter is shining, but men refuse to turn to its
healing rays for forgiveness, redemption and
Mlvation. Thus Christ is being rejected by the
overwhelming majority of humanity today. As a
result, men stumble on blindly in spiritual dark-
ness toward destruction, judgment and helL
ln the midst of the darkness and "void" at
the .creation of the world, God said, "Let there
be hght." In your own mind.darkened, will-para-
lyzed, conscience-dulled soul, God can make the
light penetrate and turn the darkness of your own
life into day, .if you will Jet him. Many of you
are living in spiritual darkness: confuaed, frus-
trated, disturbed and fearful. Let the Light come
into your heart by faith.
When Christ comes into ou r hearts, then we
Christians become little lights reflecting the
Light of God . By receiving the Light we become
, small lights ourselves in the midst' of the en-
veloping darkness. There are thousands of peo-
ple in every stratum of society who are this year
proving the promise of Easter.
The resurrection of Christ also brings hope
in 1970. The late Emil Biunner once said, '"Wh at
oxygen is for the lungs. such is hope for the
meaning of human life." As -the human organism
is dependent on a supply of oxygen, sO hurrianity
is dependent on itA supply of hope . Yet today
hopelessness and despair are everywhere . To.
morrow's world, if tomorrow is granted to our
wor ld, will probably be muc h like today's world,
only more so.
Tomorrow's world will be One in whic h the
rnagges of humanity conti nue to drag out t hei r
days : miserable , poverty-stricken. hungry, sick,
fearful, thei r faces ground into the dust. their
backs bent by crus hi ng bu rdens. It will not be
a world free from want. disease. ignorance or
slavery. Jt will not be a world of peace and
abunda nc~ .. governed by the law of love, with
all men l1v1ng together as brothers. It will not
~ the "brave new world" of which Shakespeare

Talking with many of the world's leaden~

le88ness, darkness and despair. One European
leader said, "H the devil should offer a panacea
for the problems of the wo rld, I would gladly
follow the devil." Yes, some of our leaders would
be ready even to make a deal with the devil if
we could thereby gain a few years of respite and
peace to live in lu xury a nd keep our world sys-
tem as it is.
However, the Bibl e says that we need a cha nge
in human nature. The human heart must be
changed before we can have permanent world
peace. Only Christ can change the heart. Satan
cannot change it. He gives hate instead of love.
World leade rship is becoming desperate; but the
meuage of Eaater -the ruurrection of Jesus
Christ -is tilled with hope.
, Peter, w~o himself was given to despair dur-
Ing the epasode of Calvary, writes in a trium·
phant note : "Blessed be the God and Father of
our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to hie
abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto
a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesu11 Chriat
from the dead." There is hope that mistakes and
sins can be forgiven. There is hope that we can
have joy, peaee, aSAurance and aecurity in the
midst of the despair of thifl age. There is hope
that Chrl11t is coming soon -this is what is
called In Scripture "th• bleaaed hope." There Ia
hope that there will come aome day a new heaven
and a new earth, and that the Kingdom of God
will relrn and triumph.

Outaide, most factories would
ahatdown.
From time to time other aections
of the nation have faced a
ahortap of eneqry-electricity
ADd fneill nch u oil, coal and
natural gu.
So far, there hu been no shortage
of electricity here and no short-
ap of fneill for your residential
requirement.. But even eo, why
IIMI more eneqry than you really
need-whatever the type?
By not wuting energy you'll be
helping conaerve oar country's
natural reeources, which in tarn
contributes to the protection of
the environment.
Here are a few suggestions to
CODIIider :
0 Cheek your home's insulation.
You could be using up to 50 % more
energy than necessary to heat or cool
'
0 Keep your damper in your
fireplace closed when not in use.
0 When the weather gets very hot
or cold, draw your drapes and
curtains. This will help reduce the
demands on your heating or air-
conditioning systems.
0 If you leave the heat on while
you sleep, set your thermostat
at so•. Speciol thermostats are now
available to do this automatically.
The lower you set your thermostat,
night or day, the more energy you
will save.
0 If you happen to have electric
heating, you probably have separate
thermostats for individual rooms.
If so, you can turn them down
in rooms not in use.
0 Don't~ your oven to heat your
apartment or home.
0 Turn off lights when not in use.
30 minutes.)
0 In summertime, set your air-
conditioning thermostat as high as
you can without being uncomfortable.
The greater the difference between
the indoor and outdoor temperature,
the more it costs you.
O To keep your house cooler, shade
window areas from direct sunlight.
Use awnings or plants that shield
windows.
O To cut cooling costs, install an
exhaust fan in your attic. It can
reduce heat transmitted through
your ceiling.
0 Check the temperature setting on
your water heater. Controls are set
too high in many homes. And fix
leaking faucets to save water and
energy.
0 Operate your dishwasher only
with a full load. Same holds true for
your washer and dryer.
