How do you
TI\c man was actina stran.,ely.
You know what peopk thoulht.
But the neighborhood pharma~
cist had a hunch, lOOk a close
look, save the man sugar. lben he called a
physician who found the man was in in~ulin shock.
Too much insulin, nol liquor. Without prompc
treaement, he might have died. This s1ory illu~
trates the potency of modem drugs. Before usina
powerful druas you should s«-·a ph)'\ician and
then follow directiuru to tile ll'lll'r wh<•rr raking

drug!!, the diabetk in lhis s1ory wouldn'\ have
had a life to save.

St. Thomas Bible Lesson DO
~0 JACOB DEPARTS (I)
Genu;s 31 :2-24
Lesson 35, Series Ill
This lesson tells of Jacob's fl ight from Laban and his departure for his
own country. Scripture does not ~Ia borate on the t~larms and fears which tr.ust
have beset Ja cob: it merely recprds th t: circums t<~nc es and fa cts lea ving the
~ader to draw conclusions fr om th em. Jacob could never forget that he was
al read y a fu gi tive fr om his own counlry, h~n·i ng fled fr om he fore F:sau who had
determined to kill him for tri cking his fath er nut of the ble ssing. Jacob lth
home in s uch haste that he re calls he hac! nnl~ hi-" s ta ff when he came to his
un cle.
Jacob re viewa hil'l case before his w1ve a, having called them out to the
fie ld whe re they could talk priva te ly. "Ye know that ~·ith a ll my power 1 have
served )'OUr father. And your fathe r hath deceived me a nd changed my wages
len limes; but God suffered him not to hurl me ." Further Jacob explains lo
them how God has watched over him and ta ken care of him, so they may know
he is not deao late. He then re latea that he made a vow at Bethel where, aa he
fled from E:sau he had been given the great vision of tht: ladder reac hing to
Heaven, a nd informs them that God ha s said: ''Now arise, get thee out fr om
this land, and return unto the land of thy kindred."
. The failhln! fell from the ranks. From the time that they
drscovered that all was not to be a pathway strewn with
I'O!e!l over which they should follow tht: Saviour to power and
p~~~ce. many deserted Him. "From that time many of
Hrs diSCiples went back, and walked no more with Him.
Tben said Jesus unto the twelvt!, Will yt: also ao away? 1ben
Sitnon Peter answered Him, Lord, to whom shall we so?
thoo hast tbe words of eternal lift:" (John 6:66-68).
Labttn undoubtedly kn ew of Jacob's plight. 1111d this led him to deal so
hardly with him. II is nephew was pre tty much at h i~ mercy . :'~low things have
become dang.erous for, Jacob and his family. Lobon has pros pered greatly
be c11ust: of h!!ll nep~ew s ser~ice ; and Jacob has alsl'l prospered taking as his
wages the use of h1s master s herds and caule u a kind of working capital.
Jacob was not foolish enough to imagine there is any such thing 11s a "se lf·made
man :" he unders!o!ld not only !hat God 's providence had proapered him, but
h ~w it did. But neither did Jacob tempi God by failing to manage his aHa ira
Wl!!iel y. He knew ah~o that il takes capital to make a forlune: it takes money
as we uy. More realistically. il takes ca tt le to beget caule. For his wages
Jacob asked 1he use of Laban's stoc k to get his own, whi ch was agreed to.
But now the very prosperity with whic h God hu blessed Laban throu8h
Jaeob, and Jacob himself, becomes the ground for murderous envy by Lab.lln '8
aou. They put a false reading on what has happened in order to seem to give
cauae for their malice . They are overheard to say, "Jacob hath taken away all
that waa our fa ther's; and of that which was our lath~ f a hath he gottea all this
slory." At ~he s ame time Jacob saw that Labttn gfwe him sour looks, and spoke
c urtly to hun. He had the grac!l to rt:ad the Aigns, and lo act:ept them for what
they were. Sue~ envy and malice c:ould only lend, aa it had in Cain, and aa it
would in the Jews wh o delivered Juus to be cruc ified, 10 murd er. Jacob was
not so proud and foolish u to imagi11e he could sweet talk his cousins out of
their ill will ; nor that they simpl y did not unders tand. lt e had the humility to
know he waa in rve dan~r.
Rachel and Leah then give the ir conse nt. They tell how Laban has a lso
chealed !hem out of their p<Wtion of inheritance. They ha ve nothing of their
own , and belong altogether to Jacob. Their fortunes are bound up altogether
wi th his, and they, too , accept what they are fa ced with.
This ia a true wifely response, prefiguring the reaponst: of tht: Churc:h to
Chriat, and o£ every Chr istian soul to ll im. "Therefore shall a man leave hia
father and his moth er, and s hall cleave unto hie wife: end they ahall be one
fle s h," uys the Scripture (Ce neais 2:24 a nd Matthew 19:5). The fortunes of
the wivea are one with lh ose of the hus band. So they reply. ''Whatsoever God
hath aaid unto thee. do."
And IO whom shall we go if not lo Christ? He hath still
the words of eternal life. The urae to live b innate in the
human heart. Men dina ,to life. The inslinct of self-
prea:ervalion asserts . itself in the actions of !he poorest. m05t
