Back In 1956-57 we had a real donny-
brook over the attempt of the U. S. Post
Office Department to take away the first
class status of the Corona del Mar Post
Office. Now we are facing a similar
threat, and ' there must be another out-
pouring of local opinion to halt this
attempt to take away community Identity
by submerging the local Post Office as a
mere station In the Newport Beach postal
organization.
Du,ring the 1956-57 conlrontatlon, a
100% protest from businessmen and local
resldenls got the message to Washing-
ton, D.C., and the official word finally
came from the Post Office Department
that "It has been decided not to proceed
rallying to the editorial stand of the
Ensign, and It gave proof that local
voices can be heard ~ the way up to
the nation's Capitol. ·

It ts significant to recall that during
that previous fight, tha San Francisco
regional office had made a written prom-
Ise that the wishes of the local residents
would be considered In arriving at a
decision. So raise up your voices In
protest again: Preserve the identity of
Corona del Mar, retain the first class
post office, and stop this renewed effort
to disrupt the cooperative and friendly
relationship that exists among the sep-
arate communities that make up this
wonderful Newport Harbor Area. • • •
• LEFT IS LEFT, AND RIGHT IS RIGHT
One of my pet peeves is to have the
liberals and leftwlngers smearing· the
conservatives by trying to link them with
fascists and nazis. A recent picture caption
for television publicity stated: "Orson
Welles portrays the head of a right-wing
organization that plans to take over
France, annex Algeria again and build a
fascist empire." This prompts me to
reprint ·the following item from the Log
of May 2, 1968 :
One of the most persistent and unjust smear attack s
against the conservatives is the charge that they are
moving In the direction of fascism and nazism.
The twisted line of un reasoning goes like th is: At
the far left Is communism, and soc ialism also went that-
a-Nay , but not qu ite as far. In the middle are the "900d
guys." And at th e far right are the nazis and fasci sts,
and the ultra-cOnservatives. The result is a black eye
for the conservative cause by constant association of
"far right" with "nazi" and "neCHlazi" and "fascist."
To say that nazism is similar to th~ far right Is the
same as sa ying that black is white. The truth is that
nazism and fascism and communi sm are ll.ll OF TH ~
L~FT. The aU-Inclusive word is TOTALIT4qli\NISU,
or IJICTATORSHJP. They all stand for po werful cen tral
government, with strict government cont~s and a mini-
mum of ind ividual liberty.
Indeed, what does the wOI"d, "Nazi," stand for '? What
better authOfity than the Nazis themselves! They coined
the word them selves as a handy abbreviation for the
name of their party, "Nationalsozialistische Partei ~· the
Nati onal SOCIALIST Party of A.dolf Hitler. ln the Ger-
ma"t pronunci ation , the first 2 syllables make up the
sound of the word, "Nazi." The dictionary definition
adds another reve"al ing bit of informati on; "Nazi - a.
German Fascist." The Nazis and fascist s are both
SOCIALISTS.
1\,nd who are the communists'? '~hat better authority
thM the communists themselves, as shown by the name
they gave to their communist Russ ia: uuSSR -Union of
so ... let SOCI A.UST Republics:' They are all of the same
breed -social ist s in varying degree, all dedicated to
the suppression of individual liberty for the "good" of
the al !-powerful state.
All the se totalitarians are to the left of center. ·•e
conser ... atives are to the right of center. we are for
limited, consti tutional government and for individual
l iberty, and we re cognize that growth of government
power Is a threat to our fteedom. 'lie resent being ma-
ligned by the commentatOI"s and news writers and hea~
line writers who try to link us with the enemies of
freedom.

The same thing we get every month from
more than 1,200 Orange County businesses.
Bills. For goods and services. Bills from Virginia
... for uniforms for our Information Center guides.
From Western Plastering ... for work on our Park
West Apartments. From Mr. Gomez ... for dairy
fertilizer for our orange trees.
Some people may tell you that The Irvine
Company makes its money in Or~nge County ...
but goes outside the county to spend it.
But it just isn 't so. WE'RE SPENDING AT
THE RATE OF $2 ,500 AN HOUR IN ORANGE
COUNTY. $2,500 . EVERY HOUR . EVERY DAY.
THAT'S 22 MILLION DOLLARS A YEAR . And it
all goes right into the pockets of people i n
Orange County.
People who pour cement for Irvine build-
ings. And truck Irvine crops to market. Maintain
Irvine marinas. And cater Irvine parties . Paint
Irvine signs. And sharpen Irvine lawnmowers.
Repair Irvine tractors. And supervise Irvine
playgrounds.
$2,500 an hour. To the Orange County
firms who landscape our greenbelts ... or water
them. Design our buildings ... or clean them . In-
stall our telephones ... or answer them. Sell us our
cars ... or wash them .
•
$22 million a year. To Orange County law-
yers and contractors, artists and electricians,
photographers and plumbers, insurance brokers
and carpenters, travel agents, veterinarians, . eng meers.
And we're not even counting the millions
and mill ~ons of dollars Orange County gets from
all the independent builders who are putting up
houses and apartments and office buildings and
industrial plants on Irvine lands.
So , if someone ever tells you that Irvine isn't
spending money in Oran ge County ... or that
lltURSOAY, NAY 13, 1111
•••
Irvine is doing this ... or isn 't doing that, we hope
you won 't just take his word for it.
Come right out and ask us ... is it true?
(Write to us : Is It True? Suite 700, 550
Newport Center Drive, Newport Beach , California
92660).
And when you sit down to pay your bills this
month, think of us. In the hour or so that it takes
you to write your checks, Irvine will have spent
another $2,500 in Orange County. For goods
and services from people like:

By T . Robenlngram
From CHRISTIAN NEWS, New Haven. Mo.
The abortionists may well have trlciered an
awakening In Texas that not only spells tbelr ov-
erthrow but also must lead to a general return to
deceocy and law.
By seekllli to make It easy to klll wttbout threat
of punishment the abortionists have not only laid
bare the hideousness of their OW"n system of "no
morality" but are forcing the rest of us to come
back around to the only alternative to their plot.
That Is, recognition that God Is the author of all
law.
Even the aDCient Pagans knew this much.
The abortlonlsu are forcing us to see It once
'more-or, to admit It
A young snJppet pushing herself Into the role
of a news reporter mooked, "Who made the law?"
The expected reply, of course, ls some man,
tone ago.
That bas been the bemusing proposition 1ener-
aUy accepted In our land at least since the days
of Oliver Wendell Holmes and his goatee.
Such an answer. how-ever, says man, who made
It a crtme to murder, can also make It rt1ht to
kW.
Such Is Joe F1etcher's excuse for ·'New Mor-

Who decides what ls extra-ordinary?"
Why whoever has the guns, of course.
It may be a Stalin; It may be the mob bacldDi
him up. In any case, It 1s men.
The mass stupidity today refuses to believe
anyone would really pretend murder Is JustWable,
having been so contused as to previously call
capital punishment murder, and war mur:Jer.
But every revolutionary regime there hf _,i, ever
been has introduced a cold-blooded pr¥am of
man kWJne.
The aame little snippet who asked, "Who made

I"ROM "THE EVAHCZ:L," 80X 25, LAitGO, fLORIDA
A loud cheer rang out from the •mall group huddled ti&hUy around the ftq-
pole. A youn!if man who had c-onlributed little toward what the Amerieen tlq
stands for had burned his draft card. America has produced more draft dod .. n
and card burnen in the la!t five yean than any oth.r nation would loMnte.
Thouah Christians uaually deplore deliberate and violent attempt. to d.troy
government authority, the church today racs a comparable dilemma. peculiarly
ita own. We have our own "draft dodgers" and "card burMn." 'nley an tboM
who have heard Christ say, "Ye have not choeen me, but I haw~ you aDd
ordained you that ye should go and bring {orth fruit ... " They a.-. thoea who.
knowing the d emands or t.he Great Commiaaion, have elected 1o ~ them.
ThouJ!:h they hnve been "selected" to be ttOidien for Christ, they h•ve made them-
!!elvea unavailable for &ervice.
Perhaps, we who are "recruiting officers" ore more to btam. for UU. than ,..
are ready to admit. We have failed to preM!nt ,the Lom.hip of Jeeut O.riet. We

So is a healthy environment
At Edison, we're working to bring you both.
Electricity is one energy we
cannot do without. Shut it off and
most factories would shut down.
The impact on all of our lives
would be devastating. Electricity
is also essential for cleaning up the
environment. It is needed to
operate systems to purify water,
clean the air, recycle usable
materials anJ di spose of waste.
Fortunately. electricity is clean,
tlameless and odorless and doesn't
create by-products of combustion
at its point of use.
On the other hand. when fuel is
burned in power plants. certain
by-products of combustion are
released into the atmosphere. This
is also true when burning gas in
homes, gasoline in autos or gas or
oil in industrial plants.
Emissions from power plants are
one of the things we're working to
control. In fact, Edison was
among the first companies in the
nation to activate extensive air
pollution research programs. We
were also one of the first utilities
to use a low-sulphur, low-ash oil.
As a result of these programs,
we've been able to make
significant reductions in

emissions from our fossil-fuel
plants.
Another step we're taking to
improve the environment is
generating electricity at nuclear
power plants. Since there's no
combustion in a nuclear reactor.
there are no by-products of
combustion released into the
atmosphere.
We are also making steady
headway with other long-range
environmental projects. These
include improving the appearance
of our transmission towers and
substations and providing
unde1·ground electric service.
Peaceful use of the atom. Nuclear power plant reactors, such as the! one at San Onofre, above, release no by-products of
co mbustion into the air. Two additional units are planned at this site near San Clemente, and are scheduled for commercial
operalion in 1976 and 1977.
