A.RVO E. HA.APA, o•ner and publisher of the Ensl9'1 ARVO E. HAAPA, ownet and publisher of the Ensign <000~ (Continued from Page 1) Ensign Log on Marcb 26, 1970, tben fur- ther developed by Frank Wood ol Balboa, presented publicly at a Newport Harbor Chamber of Commerce "sunrise bull session," explained in person to Senator Carpenter by a trio of Freeway Fighters, and published in tbe special freeway edition just before the successful elec- tion of March 9, 1971. Tbat plan called for a freeway route along a portio~ of tbe presently adopted Corona del Mar freeway in the Back Bay area, along Palisades Rd., and going down coast in the Bonita Canyon area to serve as a natural divider between tbe City of Newport Beach and the new City of Irvine, joining tbe inland r outing of the freeway past Laguna Beach. This plan emphasizes the fact that neither Senator Carpenter nor the City of Laguna Beach is leveling with us. The senator spea!<s of an "acceptable route" developed by Laguna Beacb. What is that acceptable route 7 It goes IN LAND, not through the heart of the city. Laguna Beach residents happily won their fight; now they are opposing our successful effort to do the sa:ne, and Senator Car- penter is backing them instead of his home folks. It's Irksome to bear the constant r eplay of the worn-out record that we need a freeway bulldozed through our wonderful community to take care of future traffic. It takes only a little common sense to figure out that tbe freeway would not lessen the congestion on local streets, but would actually make the traffic jams worse. U the freeway hordes would con- verge on our community from 4 direc- tions (the Newport freeway, Cor ona del Mar freeway; and fro:n north and south on the coastal freeway), obviously there would be an enormous spill-over of cars onto tbe local streets. Expert testimony supporting tbis observation comes from no less an authority than Bill Hashimoto of tbe Los Angeles office of the Division of Highways. His testimony, given at a Newport Beach City Council meeting, has never been r efuted, and has met only with stony silence from the freeway pro- moters, including Senator Carpenter. • • • • "THEO-CRATIC" PRAJSE HELPED Fifty years in business in the Harbor Area is a remarkable r ecord. Day and night. All year long . Seven million dollars in property taxes. Four and a half million in state and federal income taxes. Eleven and a half million dollars a year. That can buy a lot of fire trucks and stop lights and school books . In fact, it's enough to cover the cost of all federal aid to education in all Orange County for a full year. Enough to support 6,000 Orange County welfare families . Or build a dozen elemen- tary schools. Or four high schools. Or pay the salaries of more than 1 ,000 teachers. That 's why, when somebody says Irvine doesn't pay its share of taxes, everyone in our company winces. Especially the tax accountants. ELEVEN AND ONE-HALF MILLION DOLLARS . And that doesn 't even include all the sales taxes we pay. Or state and federal unemploy- ment taxes . Or social security taxes. It doesn 't include all the taxes that come out of the paychecks of The Irvine Company 's 600 employees. And it doesn't include the millions in taxes paid directly by all the businesses and in- dustries and residential property owners on Irvine Ia nds. Which brings up another question. ,I,;> it true what some people say? That Irvine development creates a need for things like schools and roads ... but doesn 't pay for them? Look at the figures . Tax dollars used for things like schools and roads and fire departments. So, if someone ever tells you that Irvine doesn 't pay taxes ... or doesn't do this ... or does do that, we hope you won 't just take his word for it. Come right out and ask us ... is it true? And the next time you stop for a stop light ... or a fire engine ... <;>r a first grader crossing the street, think of Irvine.
