HAAPA, owner and publisher of the Ensign • KEEP AN EYE ON KYMLA CAPERS When Carl Kymla came around more than a year ago to solicit my vote and Ensign endorsement of his Council candi- dacy, he convincingly espoused the cause of private enterprlse, lndlvldual responsi- bility and economy In government. Since his election to the Newport Beach City Council, he has turned out to be one of the most dedicated pleaders for controls and restrictions and regulations In my memory of observing City Council activ- Ity, which goes back some 23 years. Monday night he went a step further, tampering with the time honored prin- ciple of competitive bidding. The Ensign submitted the low bid for publishing the city's legal advertising, about one-half of the rate offered by the Dally Pilot. Councilman Kymla disregarded the con- siderable savings provided by the Ensign bid, and said that the legal publication contract should be traded between the two newspapers, regardless of the amount of the bid. He made a motion to award the contract to the Pilot, but his fellow councilmen properly burled his motion with a 6-1 negative vote, and the contract I was awarded to the low bidder. the Ensign. These Kymla capers should be of con- lsfll€rable concern to all property owners, taxpayers and businessmen, which takes in just about all of us. This address was delivered, in part, a/ a Fal· IOwship of Christian Athletes worship service at the White House in October. t970. Ten years ago," I heard the man say, "I was walking am ong the tall office buildings and aP.art. ment houses of New York C ity when I came to an empty lot. Some boys were playing baseball with a ball wrapped in tape and a plank tor a bat. I sat and watched them tor a while, and noticed sitting on some rocks at the side a boy whose legs were dangling. "I went over and sat by the boy, and learned that he was paralyzed !rom the waist down. After more conversation it came out that there was an operation that could be per- Conned, but it was costly and the boy's parents did not have the nec- essary funds. I went back to my hO- tel room and sat down and wrote some letters. It wasn't tOo long be- fore I started receiving replies . Ch ecks came in, and cash , and now I had the money. With the boy's parents, I made the necessary ar- rangements for the s urgery:' "Today I a m happy to r eport that the operation was successful The boy learned to walk again a nd it was as though he had never been injured. I wish I could go on to say that he is now a successful busi- nessman, profession al ma n or ath- lete. But" -and I saw the tears come to the man's eyes -"I have just received word that this boy is in the penitentiary on death row, waiting to be e~ecuted." He went on, "Men and dolla r s can make a crippled boy walk, but they cannot make him choose the right path."' Seven years ago r was invited to take part in a city-wide meeting in Columbia, South Car olina. At the time I was playing second base in New York for t he crowds in Yankee Stadium, but on t his occasion I was scared to death. There were about eight hundred people in that audi- torium, and I knew that some time during the meeting they were going to call on me to speak for five minutes. Then I watched as F rank Broyles of the University of Arkansas stood up, grabbed t he microphone and sha red what Jesus Christ meant to him. And then Bill Glass. defensive e nd fo r the Cleveland Browns, 6'5", 265 pounds, took over and sha r ed a verse of Scripture I was not too familiar with. 1 have smce learned that it is found in Romana 1 :16 anc! that It reads. "! am not uhamed of the Goopel of Chris~ for It Ia the power of God unto aalvation to everyone that believeth." I remem. ber thinking at the time, ''Here Is a man ~ho iS not only unashamed, but who seem s to be glad to stand up and share what is real in hta lite." Well, during the next few days Bill and I paired off and went to visit some civic club& and high school a88emblies. Then we were taken to the state penitentiary in Columbia. There the prison chapel was filled to capacity, and after we had spoken and were walking out. one of the young inmates reached out and took me by the ann. His question was very simple : "Why is it that I hear about J esus Christ now, in here, for the ftrst time in my life?" That may help to explain why I am excited about a national organi- zation of Christian athletes who have banded together with the ex- press purpose of challenging ath- letes, and through them the youth of North America, with the adven- ture o! following Jes us Christ in the fellowship of the church. When my wife, Betsy, an'd I flew t o Wash ington, our plane was also carrying South Carolina rooters on 1thei r way to a football game with the University of Maryla nd. Be- cause we were late getting aboard. Betsy and I were not able to sit to- gether. S he soon struck up a con- versation with her seatmate, a gen-;. tlema n from South Carolina, who told he r that his wife never t rav- eled on the same plane. "In case t he plane goe.~ down," he explained, "we don't want to go down togethe r." My wife followed up by asking the que!'ltion. "If th is pla ne shou ld go down, do you know where you'll go?" He paused for a moment and gave her a good -works type of an- ~wer with a half-hearted "I hope." Then, rrom t he Bible, Betsy shared with h im how he might know where he is going, in case the plane j ust happened to go down. He thought about it for a while, but failed to res pond. Now, the question my wife put is basically the same question l , heard Bill Glass ask, a nd it is the question I am asking. It is really the abiding question of mankind: "What s hall I do t o gain eternal life?" In the tenfh chapter of Mark we find .a young man asking the question of J E'!'IUS. This youth is sometimes de- scribed a~ a "rich young ruler," but I believe he wa~ also an athlete, be- cause I notice t hat he came running up to J esus. The young man came in the right attitude. runnin~ and kneeling in • front of J esus. He uked the right question ; furthermore, he came to the right person, God's Son, Jesus Christ the MeMiah. In return he got the right answer. Jesus looked at him and loved him and, according to our text, he said, "Sell what you have and give to the poor, and come, take up the cross, and follow me." This is the same Jesus Christ who said, .,I am the way, the truth, and the life; no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." But the young man, I regret to say, made the wrong decision. He turned and put his head down and walked away. He had had his moment with Jesus, but there was a price he was not willi'lg to pay. I had my moment with Jesus when I was a teen-ager. One day the pastor of our church came around to my home and sat down, and I didn't want to be there. I remember so well that I wanted to be outside playing bMeball, but I was cor- nered. Then he said some things that changed my life. He started talking about sin, and I knew he had me there. He followed up with the penalty of sin : "The wages of si n is death." But then he came up with the Good News : "Christ died for our sins, he was buried, and rose again the third day, according to the Sc riptures." That day as a teen- ager I responded and accepted J esus Christ as Lord and Savior of my life. The following Sunday I pre- sented myself to my church as a candidate for membership. I'm not about to stand here and say that I've run a victorious course all these years. There has been de- feat in my life. There have been times when I have wanted to coach and run my own life, and when I've turned from God's way and gone my own way. After graduation from high school I began to think and eat and sleep baseball. I wanted to move up in the athletic world. My crown was a corruptible crown. In m ore recent years I have ~tood before groups and have said that Ccuch Bobby Rich•rd~on ol rhE" University of Soulh Cnolin• the world needs "real men today, men with inner poise, who stand for a principle, who have the courage to guard what is sacred and to pro... fes.s Jove for God in the midAt of a materialistic crowd." But even while I wu saying it, I knew that these things were not true in my own life. That is why I w~ so grateful when Rex Kern read a Scripture passage that has come to mean much to me : "If we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellow ship one w ith another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from a ll sin." In the 1960 World Series I hit a grand slam h ome run ; but it is the 1964 Series that I remember best. I made two errors in those games, and felt terrible. Yet I had a chance to explain to people that all of us have come short of the glory of God: and I was able to give a word of testi. mony for the Lord. a nd what he can do through his blood which was shed on the cross. An a thlete has to believe in him- self, but in the Christian life it's different. Our stre ngth is in Christ. In our weakness he will make us strong. We keep on failing and mak. ing errors in life. but as we con. sistently seek to conform to the image of Christ, and make him ou r goal and our purpose in life, and give him the honor and the glory, he fo rgives us, he develop~ t he talents he has given us, and he grants us the conqueror's reward, the incor, ruptible crown that never fade~ . .c:>< knows.
